Adrien Broner undefeated WBA welter weight and three other division world champion enjoys " a lot of ice cream" in preparation for his upcoming fight at 145lbs. Just thought I'd share this with the anti sugar if it tastes good spit it out brigade.

    Ha!

I never ever believe any of this garbage, it's like Bolt when he said he had McDonalds before his 100m sprint in 2008.

Athletes like to make people think that the things they do are effortless, when in actual fact they have doctors and a team of people looking after them.

Do you actually think a professional boxer eats ice cream as part of his diet for fights? You need to think again!

After a hard training session some fast carbs in the form of an ice cream . Perfect.

Guy probably has multiple training sessions per day eating an absurd amount of calories do you think he gets it all from green veggies or chicken and rice . Id love to see you eat 800 carbs worth of veg.

You obviously think marathon runners who take energy gels ( pure maltodextrin insome cases) during a race are mugs aswell then ?

I have an 'in' with a certain olympic medalist irish boxer and I guarantee you they very rarely eat ice cream or believe in IIFYM.

    Probably wasn't eating Wibbly Wobblies.

It is common for athlete's to eat protein/carbo ice creams in moderation.

Cant say yes or no to that question because I dont know just saw it on a documentary a couple months after I ran into him in the Dubliner pub in Tenerife having a few with his missus. Did see john joe nevin down the pub the other day tho.

Hatton used to be down his local playing darts and eating chips/pies with peas and gravy. But that was when he wasn't training for a fight. But I don't think it was particularly brilliant to be yoyoing so much.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,396 ✭✭✭✭Frank Bullitt

Yes he was also fond of doing cocaine as well, wasn't he? I suppose if it fits his macros...

Adrian Broner is the biggest tool in boxing. He's the sports No.1 figure of hate. He's pulling the eating ice cream stunt to show off he can make weight easy.

Broner moved up from lightweight to Welterweight. This is the reason he is making the welter limit with little hassle. He definitely doesn't eat ice cream as part of his fight prep.

I quite liked him but I don't think he was anywhere near beating Mayweather or Manny, regardless of his diet between fights.

I guess we were exposed to him a bit more because of Sky etc. But he won a few fights with some tasty body shots. There's a beauty in a knockout with a body shot.

Yeah it could mix it with his go forward pressing style and I think a body shot was the last punch he took in his career.

ex amateur boxer here, i confirm the OP's general thoughts... as an athlete you have a certain leeway in eating things that people who don't work out cant afford to eat. a friend who was a much better athlete - top10 800m runner in the US - she used to eat a huge bowl of melted chocolate with marshmallows every day for lunch. After steaks and pasta. She was all muscle and really thin (and fast, obviously). Whatever she ate, she burned it running.

I'm actually surprised this is news to some of you - not trying to be sarcastic. I genuinely thought it was common knowledge. It seems self-evident (if you burn 6k calories a day, why would 1k calories of ice cream ruin your diet?). It's also been in the news a million times, with different athletes talking about it and articles written about the very fact... off the top of my head:

When did ice cream become poison? If any of ye watch TUF you will see the amount of sh1t/alcohol the fighter consume.

Ice cream is tasty and should be consumed with cake as part of a balanced diet.

Yeah, fitting I guess, that Senchenko finished him that way. I remember reading how he'd got up to about 15 stone before a fight. Not all fights but I'd say he wasn't far off it

Broner is unreal, been following him for years, before he was cool

He's one of the very best right now. Floyd, Ward and him. He would beat Pacquiao without much hassle. Pacquiao can't and won't fight guys with a style like mayweather/broner, unless it's his final payday. Look back at some of his early fights and who he struggled with, then look at some of the common characteristics of guys that gave him trouble... If the fight ever happens, put the kitchen sink on Broner.

Anyway, ice-cream, yes. I would believe that from time to time Broner could have it. Why not. He's quickly moving up weight classes. Just don't ignore the fact that the rest of his diet is gonna be very very good...

Op brought this up as result of another tread where he took exception to a post stating people should manage there sources of sugar. This was in the context of the average joe who gets little or no exercise. The case for a pro-athlete consuming a lot of sugars around intense train times is a different case altogether.

Why is it so difficult for people to believe that you can get in shape and stay in shape by eating bread, pasta, ice cream, pizza etc. As long as you are eating enough fiber (10 to 15 grams) per 1000 calories then there should be no issue eating them types of foods.

Brb eating broccoli, porridge, chicken and feeling miserable.

Therefore by your logic if you're not training the way he is you shouldn't eat the way he is.

    You just proved yourself wrong.

    Well done.

So if you've a HUGE kcal output as a professional athlete (say 10k+ kcal/day) you've a bit of leeway with your nutrition.

    ****ing wow.

Ground breaking stuff on boards as usual.

Yeah you can loose weight if thats what you mean by in shape by running a calorie deficit.

the question is can you be health in the mid and long term by running a calorie deficit/maintenance where the calories come from processed foods containing sugar.

Well like I said if you are eating enough fiber then theres no reason why you should not be able to include simple sugars into your diet also. Obviously in order to eat enough fiber you will have to include fruit and veg into your diet.

If you are eating all of your carbs from simple sugars then no its most likely not healthy in the mid to long term. Likewise eating all of your carbs from complex carbs is not really realistic either. Why do people on boards always use extreme examples to backup their views.

Why do people on boards always use extreme examples to backup their views.

That's exactly what the situation in the OP is. An extreme example that's essentially useless.

Pro athletes have massive calorie outputs. But they have the same hours in a day to fuel thus so obviously their meals look like high calorie indulgences for the rest of us.

A bet the macro % breakdown of his diet is fairly normal given his output.

Broner struggled with Paulie Malinaggi in his last fight. Manny would decapitate Broner.

If Mayweather is so good why won't he fight Pacquiao? It's Manny that is asking for the fight. Floyd's cherry picking again, he's fighting Khan next.

Flexible (IIFYM) Dieting is a great way to diet for mental stability. It is not all about thinking of all kinds of "tasty" foods and refined sugars to try and hit your macros. When utilized properly it is about a healthy balance of foods that are rich in all kinds of nutrients, eating 90-95% "clean" and wholesome foods and 5-10% "dirty" foods. You also have to hit your fiber amounts and make sure you are getting in the essential micro nutrients through fruit, veg and multi vits. When using this method for weight loss I got no cravings for conventional "bad" food and did not once cheat on my diet. I did a 30 week contest prep using this approach and got very conditioned...

However for the general public it is not a diet style that I would encourage as very few of them would approach it sensibly and would take in too much simple sugars and not enough micro-nutrients or fiber. So tbh I am not bothered if people don't agree with the diet style, the one thing I hate is people trying to "preach" it and force it upon people. Each to there own.
