They sound lovely and romantic.
The guy you're talking about puts up with it because his confidence is no doubt shot by his girlfriend, and it's not easy for people in his situation just to suddenly stop putting up with it.

Seems like a fairly emotionally abusive relationship. He'd be far better off just getting the hell out, but this is easier said than done.

I'd imagine daily corroboration of his personal worldview that he is of little or no value and that he's lucky to have her. You see this kinda thing in abusive relationships.
