Game of the year 2013

I think its about time we decide on overall Game of the Year 2013. Everyone can nominate any single game from any platform and say why. There probably will be spoilers below so beware!

My undisputed game of the year has to be:
    The Last of Us
    Playstation 3
for various reasons. The game was visually stunning. The voice acting and mo-cap was second to none imo. The voice acting especially. Troy Baker and a surprise performance from Nolan North.

The story was one of the best written IMO and it was quite definitely the game wherein I became most emotionally involved. As regards to the ending
I think it fit the mood of the game perfectly and it rounded off the evolution of the character of Joel excellently

Anyways, Tl;dr buy the game, play the game, love the game.
    Anyone else?

Rayman Legends for me, it looks brilliant, it's also pretty humorous and is challenging and it has very clever level design.
Haven't played The Last of Us, have been tempted to get it due to nearly every reviewer giving it 10/10, I'll probably pick it up soon.

    Would also say TLOU

The voice acting in TLOU blew me away, such high quality.

As for GOTY, I dunno! I would have had it pinned on for it but Assassins creed black flag has seriously impressed me, it's scope and longevity is amazing, and the attention to detail.

But I'd probably give it to TLOU for its originality tbh, in setting and story.

I must actually mention that I've yet to play AC3 and Bioshock which I believe some are touting as GOTY contenders too. Must get playing Bioshock soon.

    The Last of Us.

Excellent gameplay, graphics and voice acting. The story and characters were exceptional. In fact it's my favourite game of that generation of consoles and the only game that matches Metal Gear Solid 3 emotively. My favourite bit, which sums up why it's my pick, is
when Ellie sees the giraffes at the university. That was a moment which showcased how there was a beauty and an innocence which still existed in the world. But that moment scared me; I was afraid to leave the rooftop and go on due to an overwhelming fear of losing Ellie. This was a fictional character and yet I'm frozen, having to psyche myself up for a good 5 minutes to open the door and go into the unknown. Any game that can have that affect on me in a moment of beauty is simply amazing

I also really enjoyed Bioshock Infinite. A lot of fun to play, a great look to it, good voice acting, great characters and in my opinion a great ending. Elizabeth was a great character and unlike most AI companions didn't p*ss me off once; in fact missions without her were less enjoyable because of it.

GTA5. Most fun I've had playing a game in years.

Has to be The Last of Us for me, not even a film this year has come close to affecting me as much. Brilliant story, writing and performances throughout, and a brilliantly mature story for a video game. Amazing animation and the score was fantastic too.

Some other great games out this year too though have to mention Bioshock Infinite, loved that too and more recently Tearaway was an absolute joy and probably the most charming game I'll ever play, which is tough when I play Rayman Legends this year too and that had a fairly firm grip on the charming crown.

Anyway, that said, The Last of Us is my pick.

It has actually been a really good year, with lots of really interesting games released. The 3DS alone offered a whole host of 'GOTY' candidates.

But in all honesty I'm kinda leaning towards Papers, Please. In a year of some really exciting developments for storytelling in gaming - from Gone Home to TLOU - Papers, Please was the most harmonious combination of theme, narrative, world building and - vitally - gameplay mechanics I had the pleasure of playing. It was so subtle in some respects, so effortlessly clear and concise in others. It was a completely new style of game that does not fit neatly into any existing genre, but it arrived fully-formed. In a great year, Papers, Please was the one game for me that marked a significant step forward for gaming as an artistic medium, and it's the kind of game that makes me really excited for the future.

We normally have a "game awards" thread starting in December every year. All of vote and poll across platforms and on gametypes.
MR.E normally starts it,....maybe he can enlighten us when it will be :D

    The Last Of Us

Can't hear this bit of music in any trailers, ads or top tens without getting emotional.

    BioShock Infinite.... (IMO)

TLOU was a depressing, but fantastic experience....

Something I personally can't hack about dreary post apocalyptic settings in games.... and I'm very sick of zombies at this stage

I was taking the piss. I don't think I've played any of the potential candidates apart from BF4 so that gets my vote.

    Rayman Legends for me.

Havent played TLOU but the only single player game ive actually completed in a few years was Bioshock Infinite , to me that says a lot as i rarely stick with a single player game.
Regarding multiplayer it has to be BF4 for me.

Ordered TLOU recently and plan to play it over Xmas. After reading this, I now can't wait. Of the games I have played, I'd go for GTAV.

    The last of us.

A toss up between Assassins creed 4 and GTA 5.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 52,382 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

Toss up between super mario 3d world and shin megami tensei IV for me. One is pure video gaming joy, the other is the most refined game in the best RPG series out there and I can't wait to see those refinements applied to persona 5.

Last of us was good and all but I felt the gameplay was a bit too clunky at times.

It's actually been a fantastic year for gaming. Top 3 for me have probably been...

    1. The Last of Us
    2. Bioshock Infinite
    3. Grand Theft Auto 5

With Assassins Creed 4 coming in a close 4th.

I really don't ever buy into the hype surrounding games, but with TLOU I was absolutely blown away.

It seriously needs to be made into a TV series, a la the walking dead. Beautiful, utterly captivating game.

More like it. But even darker would be nice. I want no compromises!

    The Last of Us
The opening sequence was unfu***ng believable and the game only really took off about 1/2 way through. It just kept on getting better and better. When the end credits rolled I was in a daze!

I have to give it to Assassins Creed IV: Black Flag. As much as i enjoyed TLOU, and as good a game as it was, it just didn't make me feel as good as i was when playing ACIV. Best character in the series, truly believable as a pirate, and the fact that
you're not even an assassin until near the end
really showed how good the game was. They say ACII saved the series. ACIV just blew it out of the water (pun intended).

And it's going to be a shame that it'll get overlooked in favour of a movie.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 988 ✭✭✭Zeouterlimits

Happy to see Rayman Legends get so much love, both it and Origins seemed to kind of bomb sales wise.

    Can't decide myself.

The Last of Us would be up there.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,825 ✭✭✭Timmyctc

And it's going to be a shame that it'll get overlooked in favour of a movie.

I havent played ACIV yet so I can't comment on whether or not it or TLoU is a better game. But TLoU is far from a Movie. I doubt you've played it if you're referring to it as such. Plenty of games are far more "on rails" than TLoU and plenty more games have twice/three times as many cutscenes than it and they aren't derided for being movies.

EDIT: Just realised you said you did play it :pac: still!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 15,116 ✭✭✭✭RasTa

Anyone who calls it a movie hasn't played it.

Played quite a bit of The Last of Us and enjoyed it quite a bit, if a little awkward in places.

Game of the year for me is Super Mario 3D World. Having hugely doubted the title when I saw it first shown in a direct, I'm extremely happy to have been very wrong about it. It's a glorious game that I've been picking up again and again to keep playing. I'm almost afraid of finishing it too early.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,400 ✭✭✭Vyse

Definitely the new Tomb Raider. Was never a real fan of the series in the past but I couldn't put down this game until I had it finished. Great stuff.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,954 ✭✭✭✭Zero-Cool

TLOU was brilliant but GTA V is my GOTY. had a great laugh in san andreas this year and the best laugh in multiplayer in years.

I truly cant wait to see what naughty dog do with the ps4 but hope they sort out partner ai as the one fault I found with tlou was ellie being completely invisible to enemies as it would have been to hard to code or taken too long, can't remember ND's official reason for it.

Won't play AC 4 til Christmas so will have to wait to judge that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,532 ✭✭✭WolfForager

I haven't been playing that many games this year due to college and work so my choice may not carry much weight, but I'd go hands down for The Last of Us. Don't think a game has resonated with me that deeply in a long time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,983 ✭✭✭mystic86

Machinima have handed out the following awards:

    Best Art - Bioshock infinite
    Most immersive - GTA V
Best Sound - The Last Of Us
Best Voice Acting - The Last Of Us (Troy Baker)
    Best Story - Bioshock Infinite
    Best Co-Op - Battleblock Theatre
    Best Competitive Multiplayer - BF4
Best Additional Content - Starcraft: Heart Of The Storm
Best Indie Game - Bit Trip Runner 2
    Gamer's Choice - BF4

Game Of The Year - GTA V

That's a lot of love for Bioshock Infinite, and not enough for TLOU.
