thats a good quality long run with good mileage for the week.
you doing a 2 week taper?

    Tnx.

Yes, I've one last long run with MP miles next weekend, mileage coming down now too, I'll get about 60 miles done this week (hopefully)

Yesterday: plan called for 20 mins recovery.

In previous training cycles this is about the time that I go into self sabotage mode and do my best to undo all the hard work.

Really demotivated at the moment and need a good kick up the arse, I've no excuses, no flu, niggles holding steady and I'm not travelling with work! I'd have rather worn a bikini backstage in front of a short sighted Donald Trump than run!! Forced myself out and did the shortest Nursing Home Special in months, 3 miles @ 8.47.

Today: plan called for 7 easy miles. The feeling of lethargy and torpor was compounded by the miserable weather. Cold and lashing rain, can't remember the last time I was out in rain that heavy. 8 miles easy over Seanadh Pheistin @ 8.27.

I need to give myself a kick up the arse but I'm afraid I'd injure myself trying :)

You're in great shape and this is possibly your best chance to break 3 hours, don't FUCK it up now by talking yourself out of it!! The work is done, keep it between the ditches now and you will sail home. Don't sabotage all that hard work as times like this don't come around too often.

And lets be honest, you're auld and getting aulder so you need to get this box ticked before the hips needs replacing! :)

Ha, the flying tea cosy is back :)

Hope you're keeping well and back running, and if you're not I'll donate my achilles to you when I eventually end up jogging in the next world!

    Tnx.

Yes I feel in good shape, but head is starting to tell the body to act it's age. Happens every cycle, but less so on this cycle and I've put so much into this one that I'm determined to get something out of it. I'm a confidence runner and the sessions I've done recently have been a boost. Doesn't help that I've been trying to hit this target for 3 years but a combination of injuries and stupidity has meant that the monkey on my back keeps getting bigger. I've a big session this weekend that's playing on my mind a bit, but once I nail that I should be good to go.

you are the end of a training cycle. If you didnt feel like this you where doing something wrong. Go and read KC's post in the sub 3 thread before Dublin. Everytime you doubt yourself read it again.

Wise words here - couldn't agree more.

I commented somewhere recently on how I found some of the shorter "easy" runs on my last training cycle to be the toughest of the lot, legs, body and mind were tired.....all part of the deal....grit the teeth, get through them ( which you are doing by the way, well done).

If you weren't boll*xed then you would have either spoofed about running those tough sessions or been way too conservative with your target.

Sounds to me like you are bang on track

    Tnx lads,

At least on this cycle I'm still getting the runs done, other times I'd have concocted some horse****e excuse to not run.

Today: plan called for 12 miles @ 7.30 pace

Was instructed to try to stick to +/- 5 seconds of this target.

Picked a rolling out and back route for this, shocking mentally again, the first mile was over 8 min pace and it was 8.5 miles before I settled into this run.

My god after over 120 marathons you'd think I'd be immune to these type of demons!

Easy miles for the rest of the week and a big session on Saturday and hopefully I can then relax.

    12 miles @ 7.27

My god after over 12000 marathons you'd think I'd be immune to these type of demons!

    FYP!!!

You have the demons cause you want this result so much, I'd take that as a huge positive C. After 12,000 like yourself you could be stale and just go through the motions for the sake of it and just tick it off as marathon 12,001. Your going to feel like a boiled sh!te for the next while but again that's to be expected after a tough training cycle like you put in and I'd be hoping you'd be feeling like that as if your not you went to easy on yourself during training for San Seb. Your in great shape for an auld fella that runs like a constipated duck and the recent weight loss will help you hit the target your chasing.

Most importantly, trust yourself, the hard work is in the legs save for one last run this weekend. DFIU!!!

Thursday: plan called for 7 miles easy. Kept pushing this out to the extent that I almost ran out of time to get this done. 7 "easy" miles where I was muttering and grumbling to myself the whole way around. Got a text from coach that calmed me down a good bit!!

    7 miles @ 8.12

Friday: plan called for more easy miles.

6 miles "easy" in the wind and rain @ 8.22

Plan today called for 2 mile wu/cd with 5/4/3/2/1 miles at MP off half mile jog. This session had my head melted all week and last night I was a man that should have been committed. "If you can't manage it you're fcuked and don't bother with San Seb". Roll over sweat a bit more. "Sure even if you manage it, you're expected to manage it at this stage, but how will you do another 11 miles on top of it in a fortnight." My leg started twitching (slowly coz I've no fast twitch fibres!). "You've nowhere near the training done that Double D and AMK have done" "you're an auld delusional fool, give up this madness"

Didn't get the best nights sleep and was up at 6am. I'd the opportunity to do this run with a two time men's national marathon champion, twud be a good chance for me to give him some advice about running and things in general :)

Absolutely perfect day for running but I was apprehensive during the warm up. He doesn't run with a Garmin so he told me to dictate the pace and he'd lock into that. First 5 miles were perfect and I felt in control, next 4 were ok too but I then started to lose the head a bit. The 3 mile rep was too fast and he was asking me was the pace ticking up! Felt it a bit on 2 mile rep and cooled the jets a bit but I went baloobas on the last mile!

Happy with that, it wasn't easy but it didn't kill me either and the company was great.

    I'll sleep tonight!

    5 miles @ 6.49
    4 miles @ 6.47
    3 miles @ 6.39
    2 miles @ 6.42
    1 mile @ 6.16

Shortened the cool down to leave it at 20 miles for the day.

Congrats on getting it done, and now you have to taper!, never mind AMK and DD, you'll hit your goal alright I bet.

No it wasn't SC, I won't name him on here as he mightn't want people to know he was running with a waddling duck, I was wondering why he wanted such an early morning start :)

Great session, C. Your choice of running partner has moved up a notch or two - hope you made the most of the opportunity and got a few tips. :)

You're obviously in terrific shape, keep it going.

Nice one C - the truth is that this session won't make your marathon and by the same token if it hadn't gone to plan, it wouldn't have broken it......but....

Its a really great sign of where you're at and you should take real confidence from it, that diesel engine of yours is obviously well tuned, the consistency and hard work has seen to that. There has been a real sense of determination about this training cycle, making things happen etc...I think that attitude is so important to keep with you over the course of the next couple of weeks and of course on the day itself

Time to get the legs freshened up and get the job done.

    Make it count ;)

That's a Savage session, man. No wonder you were apprehensive but you nailed it.
After that I'm starting to believe you could actually do it.

Just out of curiosity, why the 5/4/3/2/1 rather than say 14 straight at MP, which is what some plans specify at this stage of the cycle?

No real reason Murph, I asked coach to include it as I'd done it once before and it didn't go great (although the weather was atrocious). I've never run 14 straight miles at MP as part of a 20 miler before, might try that next time!

4 miles @ 9.49 today, legs felt OK.

    60 miles for the week.

I'm away in Lndon for most of the next two weeks so it'll be mainly a treadmill taper.

Tnx for all the posts and encouragement, I've been here before and fecked it up but hopefully this time'll be different :)

    Crazy week.

Traveled to London Monday evening, stayed in a hotel near Gatwick, plan called for 20 mins recovery but I elected for an early night instead.

Changed hotels on Tuesday, moved into the Grosvenor hotel at Victoria station. Got to the hotel gym late in the evening and got a combination of a surf and jogging workout as the treadmill belt was wonky and waved in the middle! Got 6 miles easy done.

Wednesday long day, finished up with a really good meal in the very posh Goring hotel that went on long into the night. The plan had called for 2 x 4 miles at MP but this wasn't possible so again no run. Texted coach and was told to relax and if I got a bit of extra rest that it would do no harm. Thursday travelling back on crowded trains, tubes and planes, think I caught squirrel flu and its driving me nuts, felt crap, no run.

Friday, headed to Dangan early this morning and did the planned session 1 mile cd/wu with 2 x 4 miles at MP off 1 mile recovery.

Cold out but at least the wind had abated, the trails and paths were very mucky. Felt crap and very sluggish. Got the reps done but took about a .25 walked recovery. Never got into this and never felt comfortable.

I'll get no run done tomorrow as I'm bringing the young lad and his buddy to Stoke v Bournemouth

    Rep paces 6.45 & 6.44

I think the bolded bit there is a good sign. I've never felt anything else in the few weeks leading up to a marathon anyway.

Dont worry about that - I done 2x2m @ MP last night and felt the same.
