T20 World Cup Qualifiers

These begin tomorrow in UAE. Ireland suffered a surprising defeat to Papua New Guinea in their final warm up match, this should serve as timely reminder on just how fraught with danger this format can be

Along with Ireland group A contains Canada, Hong Kong, Italy, Namibia, Uganda, UAE and USA

The other group contains Scotland, Holland, Afghanistan and Kenya so we are definitely in the easier of the 2 groups.

Anywhere outside of bottom 3 in the group means we are still in with a chance, but a top 3 place is desirable as it gives us the best chance in the playoffs for qualification. The qualification format is unusual with 6 teams to make it
The tournament has 72 fixtures and features 16 teams, divided into two groups of eight. The top six teams qualify for the 2014 ICC World Twenty20. Each group plays a round-robin tournament. The bottom three teams of each group are immediately eliminated from contention for the top six positions but will play matches to determine which teams finish in positions 11 to 16. The top three teams from each group compete in the first place playoffs to determine the teams finishing in the top four positions. The other two teams are relegated to the fifth place playoffs where they compete with the fourth- and fifth-ranked teams from each group for the positions of five to ten. Both the first and fifth place playoffs are played in a six-team, single-elimination format. The bottom four teams play in the quarter-finals. The winners of the quarter-finals compete with the top two teams in the semi-finals. Playoffs follow to determine the finishing positions of the teams

Irish fixtures with start times (GMT)

    Friday v Namibia (Stadium, 6am)
Saturday v Canada (Stadium, 10 am)
    Sunday 17th v UAE (Oval 2, 10am)
    Wednesday 20th v USA (Stadium, 6am)
    Thursday 21st v Italy (Oval 1, 6am)
    Friday 22nd v Uganda (Stadium, 10am)
    Sunday 24th v Hong Kong (Stadium, 10am)

Hopefully these will be streamed on the ICC or Cricket Ireland websites.

Didn't know Geraint Jones plays for Papua New Guinea. Fair play, most wouldn't bother.

Hes actually from there isnt he? Id forgotten that. Yeah fair play to him; associates need that sort of boost from established players.

Yeah, seems he was born there to (unsurprisingly) Welsh parents. It doesn't seem too long ago when he was playing for England - it was actually seven years ago. Time really does fly by.

It wont be too long until we are talking about the tenth anniversary of the 2005 Ashes. Frightening stuff...

Interestingly New Guinea beat Kenya today, Scotland lost to Bermuda and the Netherlands beat Afghanistan, its quickly shaping up to be an interesting tournament

Real high scoring in the PNG v Kenya game too

Hmmm just noticed that the 6 qualifiers from the qualifiers go into a first round section of the actual World Cup with hosts Bangladesh and also Zimbabwe - 2 round robin groups of 4. Pretty vital that we end up in the Zim group at the finals as only the winner from each group advances to the Super 10 stage

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,237 ✭✭✭✭djimi

So we have to qualify twice do we?

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 12,853 Mod ✭✭✭✭riffmongous

I think it's a good thing, we get a direct chance to beat either zim or ban and prove we are better than them and belong at the top table, but of course the downside is if you lose they prove they are better

Up against the hosts tomorrow, win that and we should be able to top group A without much trouble.

    Very good death bowling today

Fairly bizarre structure - its risks the hosts Bangladesh being eliminated before the real tournament has even started.
