@challengemaster, the rev meter stays just under 1000 revs, moves a small bit, but I don't think that's the problem.

It sounds like it's over fueling at idle. Not sure why it would do this, perhaps a blocked/partially blocked idle control circuit...

Just realised, this is my last week driving my astra, its a funny feeling, it was my first proper car, and even though it was battered and damaged it took me the length and breath of the country, gave me many happy moments and got me through some fairly rough times too, people ripped on me for having it but sure screw them, it's currently sitting in my driveway with 159,000 miles on it, a far cry from when i bought it with 80,000, so within this week I aim to hit the 160k milestone and then give it a well deserved rest :)

The question is, will you put the same miles on the saab?

    SAABtastic :D

Do all saabs (specifically does yours :P) have that funny thing that the key goes in to the center console, and that you can only start it if reverse is engaged?

    Silly question time....

But has anybody else ever been stuck for 20 minutes at the railway crossing on the Ratoath road.... just before Broombridge Station?

Train - five minutes - train - five minutes - train - five minutes - train - five minutes - train.....

    It was beyond silly.

No. But those silly level crossings annoy me.
Why can't they open in between the trains? I mean it doesnt take 5 minutes for a train to cross through.

Why could they not build a bridge?

Bridges are bloody expensive, and the crossings are often in places that building a bridge is impractical/impossible.

But this one turned '5 minutes early' into 'Sorry boss', on only my third day working for the place.

    It's diabolical.

There's a bridge over the canal right beside it.

It's not that far from Broom bridge. Which is only one-way. Adding traffic signals to the bridge there to enable it to be 2-way would make a massive difference.

Its to do with the signalling. If a train enters a signal block with an auto level crossing, the crossing shuts, the signal remains green and the train continues on its way. The thing is, the signal block, ie. that stretch of track between signals may be a couple of kilometers long, so once a train is given permissiom by way of a green signal, the barrier comes down.

Where problems for the motorist happen is where one train is running slightly late and another is running right behind it. As soon as the first clears the signal block, the second is nearly entering the signal block with the auto level crossing, so or either stays down or is up for a very short time.

The same can happen the other direction too, and the train is always given priority in these situations too.

Feckin optional extras. Planned to head to IKEA yesterday to pick up some bookcases. Went out to the 3 series to measure the space from the back of the front seats to the beginning of the boot. Hopped in the back to pull the rear seats down........... they don't fold down :(

Going from a '99 K11 Micra with split folding rear seats I rather assumed a 3 series would have that by default but no, it was an optional extra.

Check the boot. In mine, there's 2 handles on the "roof" of the boot to let down the back of the rear seats. Not sure if this is only in the coupé but you should be able to let them down I would have thought rather than it being an extra.

I'll double check for that when I get home but I read multiple forums which stated that it was an optional extra.

Was driving through the Jack Lynch tunnel this morning and I see they are testing some info system that interrupts the radio and plays message about turning on lights etc. anyone know how long been there? Also was nasty pile up outside the tunnel too.

Got the same message going through the tunnel at 6.40 am this morning. Also before the dunkettle on the end of the m8 a focus mk2 08 like my one passed me with one working headlight on the driver side and one parking light on the other side. No joke an actual high beam on as both dips not working and only one headlight. It gets better after blinding everyone he passed me only one tail light and number plate light working  like ffs theres driving around with one blown bulb because you haven't got a chance to change it and then there's this. When is that driver going to throw in the towel and replace the bulbs when the headlight goes and they can't see a thing.
Anyway I know people are sick of hearing blown bulb stories but this was the worst I've ever seen.

Cork to kilkenny is not a bad trek. I go to college in Ucc so I head up on a Monday morning early to avoid traffic spend the week in cork and then normally head home Friday afternoon/ evening although I've been able to go home on a Thursday the last few weeks it really just depends in how the lecture times work out. The m8 can get more boring than anything else but then I suppose it shortens the journey so much that the handy part.
