Daily Express launches "crusade" against Romanians and Bulgarians

According to their front page anyway. Whatever about the public debate to be had about the limits of immigration - did they not figure using the term "crusade"... with their logo being a picture of a knight in armor, *might* be a tad racisty?

What do ye think? Legitimate campaign or race baiting neanderthals like the English Defence League heads?

The Daily Express is the Daily Mail for Coffin Dodgers. Their front page headlines are always on one of the following topics:

    Anti-Immigrant
Your House value has gone up/Down
Miracle Pill to cure Cancer/Heart Disease/Arthritus
    Pension Values to Soar/Crash
    EU Bashing
    Nauseatingly fawning Royal Family Pieces

We should be doing the same.

Is that racist?? I don't think so, If you've nothing to contribute other than thieving and scamming, then fúck off.

Of course not all of them, but the ones that we know of should be on the first flight home.

    Wut?

Last time I looked Ireland had laws on thieving and scamming. And the only Romanian I know is gainfully and legally employed.

The article and attitude is racist/xenophobic by definition. There's no arguing that.

Whether racism and xenophobia are sometimes justified is another question. I'd generally think not, but that's a more subjective area.

How many times do people need to be told the following?

    Roma != Romanian

    One more time:

    Roma != Romanian

I take my racism seriously and if I'm going to broadcast my bigotry, the least I can do is be properly informed about which group I'm hating on this week.

There's no point in being a racist if I can't tell the various races and ethnicities apart - I'd just sound silly.

...a tad more than a tad, I'd say. Ye'd wonder if this is a move into Daily Mail territory - will the Daily Heil counter with a "purge" against Romanians and the like, or will they try a coup de main by going for the Ultimate Diana Story....

I'm right wing at the best of times but this is flat out intolerance, trying to appeal to the lowest common denominator. If they are trying to raise social issues at the very least they could try and not put it in such a discriminatory, insensitive tone. Idiots.

I spent a week in Sofia earlier on this year and found it to be a nice place. The people were hardworking and it resembled Dublin in 1995 in many ways.

But they people I met did moan on about the roma and their organized crime, much the same as happens in western Europe.

Disappointing lack of Romanian historical knowledge by the Express. Vlad III played an important role in the crusades against the Ottoman empire.

I spend a lot of time in Bulgaria and they are terribly nice people, akin to Ireland 40 years ago.

To be honest the only scammers I found there were some British ex-pats involved in the Real Estate business, along with a few of their Irish friends.
Some of the Roma community got involved in the Bulgarian Mafia and it spilled over when a Roma Mafia boss had the son of a Village mayor run over by a truck.
    That started the protests.

This is the hitter right here.

There is not one, not one single person reading this, who would lease a property to Roma, or who would not be more suspicious of Roma moving next door than they would be of a family of any other race. There will be hypocrites talking out of their holes in this thread who are uneasy with this fact about themselves.

The Bulgarians do not like the Roma, or should I say those whom they refer to as Gypsies.
They feel that they flood into Bulgaria and get all the hand outs (sound familiar).

They have totally taken over some villages and have created shanty enclaves in some of the bigger towns.
Horses wander freely around the estates and piles of scrap litter the green areas.
    (Sound familiar)
The Real Estate agents will encourage you to buy in certain villages stating that they are not "Gipsy Villages"
The last straw was when they became the Grandfathers of the local mafiosa.
Having said that some of these are employed in the villages as bar personnel, while more are engaged in the construction industry carrying out repairs and extentions.
They are well received in those respects.

I wouldn't be more suspicious of Roma neighbours.

I'm sorry that you want to paint all Irish people as racist but we are simply not.

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

Some people clearly do lease properties to Roma, and they may be reading this thread. And any Roma reading this - astonishingly, some of them can read - might even be glad to have Roma neighbours.

I don't think he ever ran any clubs, did he?

However, here's an anecdote about his modus operandi which has a few interesting insights into how British business works:
According to [an October 2012] of current affairs and satirical magazine Private Eye, British newspaper publisher and owner ofChannel 5 TV station Richard Desmond has been accused of verbally assaulting a schoolboy.

Apparently, the boy – who was on a work experience placement – sat at his desk in the Channel 5 offices eating a packet of crisps when Desmond entered the building.

The publisher, ranked as one of the country’s richest businessman, snatched the bag from the young teen’s hands and blasted: ‘You’re here to work, not stuff your face, you fat c**t!’

Although the boy burst into tearsand ran out of the building, he still enjoyed the last laugh as the placement had been arranged as afavourfor his father, a senior executive at a top advertising agency.

After the man heard his son’s story, all adverts for Asda supermarkets – one of the lucrative contracts that keep Desmond’s empire in business – have been removed from the publisher’s Daily and Sunday Star and Daily and Sunday Express titles until further notice.

I suppose we should not go too much off track here as regards Romanians, people from
    Romania,
.... and Roma who are an ethnic race who are believed to have originated in India.
    Romanians are citizens of Romania.

Roma are the race known as Romany also and they are the Gipsy race.

In fact Romania accounts for just 3.25% of Gipsy Roma population, whereas Bulgaria accounts for 4.67% and the UK , even though they do not know about it account for 0.15%.

Are you talking about the Romanians now or are you talking about the Roma who are the
Gipsy race who have very little to do with Romania or Romanians.

The most unfortunate thing that happened to that country was in 1858? Or thereabouts that it was named Romania, after the Romans and was then consigned to be forever associated with the Roma Gipsy race
