I was going to suggest a Focus. I'm not sure how much insurance will differ by though, and insurance is one of OPs main prioritys.
Certainly more refined than a Corolla.
The focus is not more refined than a Corolla. The Corolla has better ride quality and is smoother. The focus is sharper and handles better but as a result is not as refined or as comfortable.

Very few 00 bug eye models out there, most 00's were facelift models.

The bug eye did have a different (more robust) engine than the vvti unit in the facelift.

Ok cause was just thinking that 00 corrola in my local garage for 1250 is bug eye so that has the older better engine ya?

Refined means quieter usually. The focus is a lot quieter than the corolla to be fair.
NVH wasn't really an issue in 1992, the 97 onwards model was heavily based on the older model and wasn't the leap forward that the focus was compared to the escort (not that the corolla was as bad as that!)

Well anyway I need a car before next weekend so busy week ahead have to look at the pug in the next day or two
It's really between that and the corrola
If she takes 600 I be happy with that for it

Maybe the focus is quieter. if it is it isn't by much. I have owned a 99 Corolla and have driven a relatives 00 Focus ghia 1.6 numerous times. I never felt it was quieter than the Corolla, I really didn't!. It was sharper and handled better than the Corolla mind, but wasn't as comfortable.

Tbh the focus needed to be a huge leap forward from the escort . Toyota on the other hand could of built the Corolla on a whole new platform but didn't really have anywhere near the gap to fill as ford did.

I have enormous respect, and would personally purchase that model corolla over a similar vintage focus.

But I could never claim that the corolla rode better, or was more refined than the focus, and I've drove plenty of them, even when they were brand spanking new.

Have you only drove your relatives 1.6 ghia (probably a saloon)?

Yeah the pre 95 escort really was a pig, but by the time it died in 98, as much as it pains me to admit, it had been face lifted into a car that was the match comfort wise and dynamically of the corolla.

Once had a 1991 Escort 1.8 diesel, now that was a pig:)

i'm not gone on them as a corolla alternative. i just can't see them wearing as well as the toyota, if it didn't have half leather you wouldn't look twice imo.
also when buying in this price range, you are from the west and the car is in the east so when you factor in a tank of fuel or a cross country bus ticket and lunch for you and a friend it could easily wind up €100-€150 more expensive than a local car.

have you looked at the Astra G or mk1 Focus?

edit : as 306's go, its probably one of the best spec'd, not bad looking etc.

Half leather, fogs, silver bits inside,cd, think it has rear electric windows
Think it had upgraded bumpers or something too. They were a run out model
My cousins one had air conditioning
