Is liftback a deal breaker steven?

Ya I don't like the lift back ones at all for some reason
The second one looks decent and not far from me

If I was looking for a Corolla It would be a deal breaker for me. Not because of it's looks but because it's built in the uk and is not as well built as the Japanese built saloon/3dr/estate.

    +1. Was thinking the same.

I know it was talked about here recently enough and I know there definitely is a grain of truth about the build quality because of it.

nah stick to a standard unmodified example. Cars like in the above ad can be a can of worms.

What you guys think of the 306
    http://cars.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/peugeot-306-1-4-litre-petrol/5839693

    http://cars.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/peugout-306-meridian/5781224

See I am open to getting any type of car as long as it's under 1.4 due to my ban I wouldn't get insured in anything above that

Mind the rear axle, watch the key barrels and you won't go too far wrong. Both of those are ph3 examples with decent spec

Not as much but it's still there. Bearings go dry and wheels lie out, eating the tyres. Catch it in time before a groove is worn in and you shouldn't have problems again for a while. Otherwise it's a new axle!

i'l await dgt's input on the pug. i can only asume from my barstool that the pug 1.4 wont take 160k miles as well as a corollas.

And all I will say from my barstool, is that the 99 corolla Kaiser D linked is much better value imo than that pug. Id gladly spend a hundred or two extra on it.:)

To put things in perspective, I bought a 00 xsara (essentially the same car) with less mileage (60,000) for a quarter of her asking price in 2009.

306s are old hat now. No way is it worth more than 400

Pretty much, the TU wouldn't burn as much oil as the toyota 1.4 (unless it was addressed to) but at the same time 160k miles on that would have me asking that price to have a good few hundred knocked off. Was the airbag ECU replaced or just a cheapo micro-controller kit wired into the airbag light? Its a very common PSA fault, connectors under the seats usually at fault

When you can buy an XUD for not much more why would you get that? Even if it's in meridian spec....

It certainly looks clean but tread with lots of caution

Your probably correct in regard to those pugs not burning oil. However it's the red corolla with the 4e-fe I was referring to so no burning oil issues should be present. :)

Im not saying that a Corolla is better than a 306 or vice versa but out of those two examples the Corolla is the better car Imo and I think it's the best car so far in terms of condition and mileage to be recommended to the op.

The pug is too expensive, I'd want it for about €500 and even then I'd still be questioning whether to buy or not... More room in the corolla as they're either liftbacks or saloons suggested

What's the story with rust on those corollas? A lot of pugs in the 90s weren't rust protected properly and as a result crumble in odd places that no one sees.... ;)

The liftback's dont look too stylish at all, but put the seats down and they are like vans inside - i have a carina e with the liftback and that gives it acres of space

Will she said the part cost 200 to fix the airbag as it's the dearest thing she has ever put in she said. I do love the look inside imo anshe seems a very genuine women that's selling it.
As long as it wouldn't start breaking down cost me money I would go with it. Sort of suits my needs the corrola I like too but gonna cost me more money that I haven't got at the minute as my insurance want deposit of 400 as well

Rust protection is pretty good on them tbh. I've seen very few rusty ones. Most of the rusty ones i've seen had previous repair work carried out in that area. E.g I've seen one with a rusty bonnet and panel(the one that goes around the grill and lights). Turns out who ever repaired it used cheap aftermarket panels. This model Corolla actually seems to be better protected underneath than it's successor in my experience.

As for the pug. The area "no one sees" is not at the rear underneath by any chance?

Does the 00 corrola both have the bug eye and face lift model in that year. Is the bug have diff engine

I was going to suggest a Focus. I'm not sure how much insurance will differ by though, and insurance is one of OPs main prioritys.
Certainly more refined than a Corolla.

Very few 00 bug eye models out there, most 00's were facelift models.

The bug eye did have a different (more robust) engine than the vvti unit in the facelift.

Bug eye Corolla never had the VVTi engine.
