If you knew your Fords the Crusader was a run out model of the Cortina 80, hence Crusader and not just Cortina.

    That's what I meant ;)

Even allowing for their comeback with some of the younger lads - its amazing how well a lot of those starlets held up - even the model that replaced the one in the pics in NDs last two posts.

Toyota GENUINELY had a claim to been the best built cars in the world back then.

Unfortunatly Merc was still in its top quality era back then - and Volvo was still turning out stuff that would do 300k* miles without breaking sweat if all you did was maintain it well and drive it sensibly.

But certainly Toyotas of that Era - Carina II was in range at that time too - were far more worthy of a "best built cars in the world" tagline then the modern Auris and co

*but so would a well maintained Carina II - especially a diesel one

ah now, that's not quite right....most cars immediately prior to 1987 (and after) had plain white plates back and front and black and silver too in some case. Red rear plates died out a good bit before 86 in the main

Crusader was a UK only model using the masthead of the Daily Express. Here we had the Cashel, Tara and Corrib...broadly similar spec to the Crusader. Thus , it's an Import.

Think 82/83 era MAY have been a cut off point for red plates on the rear in Cork at least.

We had a Datsun Sunny here - a 1982 from what I recall - it the letters MPI on the reg plate - the rear plate was red from what I recall.

Someone also posted up a pic of an old Transit Ambulance they bought - which also had MPI on the plate - ie XXX MPI - back plate on that was red too.

Your right on the black and silver as well for the later plates - wasn't from what I recall a trend where you had black plates with brown letters and numbers - they were the same type of plate as the late post 87 plate except for the colour schemes and obviously having the older reg system - ie XXX TPI

We also had a Stanza here which had black plates front and rear but with cream??? numbers and letters - but it was an 83

Ooh interesting my father had a green beetle when I was small. I think KZI 32. It was apparently the third beetle he owned. He ended up selling to his brother who eventually sold it onto someone else who allegedly put a porshe engine. Think that was a thing for a while or maybe an "illusion" of my childhood.

My grandfather had a yellow 2 door which my grandmother sold (working) for £50 when he passed away in the 90s

Clare reg and all so it may well be an actual 1 owner car.

I can't find any photos of it, oddly. The reg does seem familiar.

A side profile shot of the Escort and Corolla would have been nice to show how utterly cars, in this case family saloons, have gotten over an almost 40 year period.

In other news, today I saw the following:

1992 SAAB 900 4 door on Annesley Bridge this morning, which looked to be a daily driver for a young family.
Old Irish reg Triumph Herald on the Malahide road heading towards town.
