There was some research in the 80s looking at the Lourdes effect on cancer patients. When they looked at the data it seemed that those going to Lourdes had a poorer outcome than the population in general. This turned out to be somewhat unfair as a reanalysis showed that, when you made adjustments for the population sample bias, Lourdes outcomes were equal to slightly better than the general population. Further reanalysis using a better equivalent sample from the general population showed that there was a placebo effect. In fact the Lourdes effect was exactly equivalent to the effect produced by the results of McMillan nursing. The latter was, however, cheaper!

All of this (except the cheaper bit) came, as I recall, from one statistical paper. The three outcomes were selectively reported by three papers which was noted by, I think, Private Eye (?). I cannot remember which but it was something like The Vatican Journal reported the positive finding, The Daily Express reported the negative finding but the real result was buried somewhere in the RS of Sociology Journal.

I appreciate that that is actually a bit boring but I was a statistician for 15 years... my apologies :)

Reminded me of the review of the Film 'Titanic' which was allegedly the two words 'It sank...'.

Does anyone know if this was a real review or simply an urban myth?

    Ummm... satire, right? Right?

Fingal County Council are certainly not competent to be making decisions about the most important piece of infrastructure on the island. They need to stick to badly designed cycle lanes and deciding on whether Mrs Murphy can have her kitchen extension.
