Berlin - the home of Currywurst! A must have!
It really is not a must have though haha.

Having tried in my first 2 years in the city eating one from every single Imbiss I could find, I came to realise that its the same plastic processed sausage and sauce everywhere.

FWIW where I work we do a de-constructed version with a twist, which I must say is fantastic (shameless brag)

You can even make out the impression of the base of the polystrene cup they came from the chipper in and were turned upside down onto the plate :D

Oh it so is a must have :D Obviously it's junk Imbiss food and it's the same big plastic trays of bratwurst and bigger plastic squeezy bottles of ketchup everywhere but that's the charm! A deconstructed version sounds awesome and interesting but regular old cr*ppy train station sausages are a big part of Germany.

    Yeah of course they are.

I guess the point im making is somebody could eat much better in Berlin than a currywurst. I spent many sleepless nights researching Herta Heuwer and other early imbiss legends of Berlin a few years ago when I was opening a restaurant first over here.

The currywurst is boring for me... Im a much bigger fan of the Kettwurst (same thing except its inserted into a hollow toasted bun) much much nicer.

Just for anyone planning on hitting up Berlin...

The Doner kebabs are a must have... They were invented here. But please spend more than 3 or 4 euro on one..plenty of cheap places but not many GOOD PLACES to get one. They are amazing.
Get a slice of Bienenstich, an amazing cake that will blow your mind (thats all I will say).
The germans love their cake so if you like cake Berlin is a haven for it.

@Mysteryegg ...you said your staying in Citadines. I know the area very well. Right across the road from you, there is a bar which does Tapas called QBA. If Tapas is your thing, you wont find a better one in Berlin. Its beyond amazing, 29 euro for a sharing plate that would do about 4 people.
You are within stone throws distance of one of Berlins finest doner shops called Max and Moritz (its right next to Sbahn Charlottenberg. ) please go there. Depending on what days you are there, you will find a beautiful food market five minutes away at fehr Berlinerplatz.

If you have any other questions feel free to ask.. Excuse my grammar today.. I have had a few too many Pils :)

I just robbed that pic from good auld WWW. because it was the only one that looks like proper mushy Marrowfart peas that I like, all the other pics were of the not soaked long enough, hard as pebbles kind. :)

Have I mentioned that I love our new butchers? :) We moved back to Ireland recently having had an amazing local butcher for the last few years but I'm delighted to have sourced a really good guy locally. It is SO important isn't it?

Anyway, question for you guys. He had really thick and delicious looking veal chops yesterday and while I really love veal I've never cooked it, have only really had it saltimobocca when I lived in Italy. Can someone please recommend how I can pay this beautiful meat it's dues or how best to cook it? Or any dishes you'd recommend please?

I just laughed out loud reading that website! "Hast du grossen Bueylschirm, siehst du mehr!"

And the sad thing is, I can't even begin to explain to anyone here why that's funny! Brilliant

Is it really that bad on it? :( the oh suggested it but i may do something else if its bad!

Sure, no harm in giving it a shot. I would be more of a traditionalist myself & stick with a good ol' mashed Kerr's Pink or Rush Queen.

I can't for the life of me understand why people make sweet potato chips though. A chip is not something to be messed with. Wedges on the other hand - you can mess with them & use sweet potatoes. But not chips. Never.

    :)

Ah it just wouldn't be to my taste tbh. But then again I'm not a fan of sweet potatoes.

There's absolutely no harm in doing it if you like it though.

The recipe in the first link looks pretty good. The second one looks more like a dinner for a toddler. :D

Be sure to let us know how you get on. Happy cooking!

There's a Sweet Potato Shepherd's Pie in the Cooking Club from 2011 (Week 38) that's really good - it uses a combination of sweet potato and normal potato for the topping

If you want to top it with sweet potato mash, you'd want to add some spices to the lamb mince. I've done it a number of times and it's beautiful. Ground coriander, cumin, grainy mustard, a can of plum tomato and some puree, also a small glass of red wine and red currant jelly to finish.

If you throw some dehydrated cheese on top of the sweet potato it'll help it crisp up. I've done it and liked it, the base was pretty much a standard cottage pie filling.

Sweet potato mash is SO sweet. You'd definitely need to bulk up the herbs and spices in the meat part to balance it out.

So sweet! That's why I honestly thought it was a joke when I read that Americans have recipes for sweet potato pie/casserole that include marshmallows and brown sugar :(

Is there any greater competition prize than a food & wine hamper? I won this last week, can't wait to get stuck in! (Although it won't be for a while as we're still working through the 1kg Lindt bunny I won the previous week! )
