There is little point in editing the channel numbers so as each time they release a software update (for a satellite frequency change) your edits will be wiped.

The satellite section of the box has potential but they need to allow one to enter a channel number, e.g. you are on a bbc channel and want to move to a channel at the list's end, you have to scroll through the channels to get there. There is also no recall channel button so if you wanted to go back to the bbc channel you have to go through the same rigmarole.

The recall button is not an issue on saorview as you just press 1, 2 or whatever.

I have the humax freesat box and I can enter the channel number. However it also doesn't have a recall button which I find surprising.

I have reset the box to factory settings and can confirm after doing so that you can enter channel numbers. Some other bugs no longer appear to occur either.

When you say channel numbers, are they your own assigned numbers or the numbers assigned by the product team?

    What numbers are you entering?

They may have updated the box since I last used the satellite side.

How long is it taking you to switch between saorview and satellite and vice versa? Does it still take a number of button presses?

Either my own assigned numbers or the numbers assigned by the team. Takes approx. 5-10 seconds, could be made quicker IMO if there wasn't the animation.

The Saorview Connect box is now advertised as Saorsat Approved

Would that mean it offers a roll back service on the Saorsat epg?
The same as it does on the Saorview epg

Has anybody tried Saorsat on the box?

    Thanks

The rollback service is through internet access so I don't see why not.
I don't know whether the saorsat epg would be like the 'metaphor' epg with 7 day epg though. Would those saorsat channels be integrated with the other fta satellite channels?

Saorsat carries a 7 day epg

Yes usually the Saorsat channels would be on the same list as the English satellite channels.

@keribillen - Any ideas on when the PVR update will be release?

The virgin media logos are up on the saorview connect box.
Is it me or is the picture quality improved?

I thought so but who knows. The logos are terrible. Too big.

I wonder when the PVR functionality will be released will they combine the satellite mode with saorview and add a 7 day guide for U.K. channels?

I know Freesat are very protective of their platform and channel numbers etc etc but there’s surly some sort of agreement that RTÉ can strike with them.

I’m sure they know that it’s a much easier sell with the U.K. guide than without.

Also wonder if they could get Virgin Media Player, All4, Netflix, Amazon Prime, NOW TV and eir sport on board

    "Soon" i.e. probably never.

    Never going to happen.

    Nope, won't happen.

Very, very unlikely for any of those. It's a closed platform with a tiny user base - none of them would be interested.

Sorry for bad news, but as mentioned before it's a dead duck.

Recording facility was meant to be added at the end of July, any news on this?

It's getting ridiculous alright. I think it was meant to be Q1 this year

Worth sending an email to Saorview

Edit - just found this from earlier in the thread https://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=104834843&postcount=856 early 2018 is mentioned for recording

Received box just yesterday and all seemed to go fine with install and setup but this morning box is locked up some way and power off for a few minutes does no good.
Off to a very bad start!
Is there some combination of button-presses while powering on that is not published?

Plug out and plug in power adapter again. It should work then.

Anyone know if the Now/Next will preload if a second SAT input is put on the connect box?

    No it wont.

The way the Now/Next EIT EPG data is loaded on these boxes is by going into the sat channels individually. They don't read from a central iepg data TP.

And it doesnt matter how many dvb modules are implemented anyway.

IF they ever enable recording on these devices you can forget about any form of reliable recording facility for satellite because of the lack of epg. There's clearly a massive hardware problem which I am guessing is the Sys Mem (is it 512 MB?) on them that they have failed to activate recording/and or timeshift a year later.

The box does crash a lot since that update was released not long after the box launched late last year.

Pity they can’t / won’t combine the DVB-T and DVB-S modes into one guide and use the internet to download EPG data for FTA satellite channels

Most people probably buy the box thinking that it will work exactly like a sky box when it comes to the guide.

    Oh well

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,380 ✭✭✭STB.

    Oh Well indeed Pat.

If its crashing so much I'd try and return it. Between that and the lack of promised recording facility, its not fit for purpose.

Whats the guarantee on these ? If its a year, its coming around, for a lot of people..... I wonder what will happen then.

Theres a box available that has 7 day epg for both all in one channel list and records for 100 sterling. Big thread on them in the satellite forum. Tiviar Alpha Plus. They dont have the connected playback via internet though.

Those boxes serve their purpose but in this moment people want a catchup internet based service and this is the only box that offers anything decent. Catchup tv and on demand tv is the growing trend and any box that doesn't offer it is very limited. Those enigma boxes are not plug and play and will never appeal to the general public.

With no chromcast on the rte player (in 2018 when every other decent player has it) really highlights the mess that rte are in.

If rte were doing things right we would have a box that would allow a terrestrial/streaming option to watch channels plus catchup/on demand. This would remove the need to have aerials or a multi room set up. They are losing out on so much potential customers.

I do wonder what the position is with others coming on board in terms of licensing the connect software on their tvs and set top boxes. We were meant to see terrestrial only saorview connect boxes and tvs with inbuilt connect.

With all due respect Tigerandahalf, the basics that people want in Free to Air land is a combined channel list of Irish (Saorview) and British (Satellite) with 7 day epg and enabled recording. Any box that doesn't offer that is not achieving the basic requirements of the Irish end user.

Catchup TV for RTE only services is not a top priority for anyone other than RTE. This is where RTE went wrong. They produced an RTEcentric device rather than a device that will ensure the viability of the Free to Air Platform. That can only be done by taking advantage of the other FTA satellite platform available to us. The reason being that there is limited content on Saorview alone.

The boxes I am talking about are most certainly fit for purpose and can be configured to take most of the technical setup out of them.

The Connect box clearly is not. And at €200, it cannot even record.

What people want, and what they can get are very different.
This is why the sky basic package is so popular.

As for rte providing their own catchup service, the bbc, itv, c4 and c5 all provide their own catchup service.

RTE providing a catchup service at the expense of the basics is not the solution. You have to walk before you can run. And RTE ran away with themselves providing a vanity box for "their" own catchup services. Nothing more.

Saorview is not an exclusive RTE only platform.

Freesat (BBC Ch4 Ch5) have devices that have a combined epg and catch up services

It is not rte's fault that tv3/virgin wouldn't come onboard. There is presumably nothing to stop them putting their catchup service on the box. TG4 already have put theirs on it, so Saorview is complete as it can be.

Unfortunately the way things are I don't think any service (paid or unpaid) will provide everything people want.

For me it is not any particular service that needs to 'have it all', but the hardware I use needs to have the capability to receive the service/s I want.

If the hardware cannot do that then it is useless to me.

The Amiko A5 combo seems to hit the spot everywhere IMO.

It has a 7 day EPG thanks to crossEPG, it can run ANY catch-up service that has an Android app and it CAN record

Pat be careful. That box is still undergoing development work. Enigma2 and Android OS have to be booted seperately (its one or the other, with no quick switch). There are major bugs with that box. For me, the lack of blind scan would turn me off.

OpenATV's E2 development work for the box can be followed here.
