I would like to get a connect box if it had a hardrive on board, as for the satellite option I think I would stick to my Freesat box. I think 'now and next' is a thing of the past.

Next is a thing of the future :)

It kills the box for anyone wanting to use it as their main sitting room box. With no access to catchup players for satellite content, people would have been happy to just series record but it won't be an option.

There is meant to be standalone terrestrial connect boxes coming out in the future but I can't see them being much cheaper than this current box at €149. If the recording comes on the box they may stick the price back upto €200. I doubt a hard drive will be included at any stage as this specific box doesn't have room for it and it will probably be the same box for just the terrestrial. They would have to license another box for a hard drive which I can't see happening.

There are no ads on rte or tg4 players at the moment but I can't see that lasting. I also note that TG4's player doesn't seem to be playing subtitles, a big issue for their content. There are no subtitles on the rte player either.

All of the above will probably come eventually but it is a slow process. It is a shame as the commercial alternatives in the market are looking pretty weak right now. Sky's offering is increasingly poor and Now TV will definitely satisfy some people's needs especially with so many young people renting these days.

Vodafone tv seems to have poor reviews, Virgin are losing customers every day while I have never heard much mention of anyone using eir tv.

In that case you should find some posts of interest to you in the HTPC section of Boards.

    https://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=643

Thanks for that. The last time I posted in the HTPC forum was 2006! :)
Getting back into it now, seeing as I'm dropping Sky soon. We just don't watch enough of it nowadays to warrant the subscription.

Oh, and I'm delighted to say that Currys/PCWorld took back that Saorview Connect box for a full refund. It's just not up to other solutions out there.

    Dave.

There is a cable connection (RJ45) but without internet, it is just a STB, with Saorview, FTA satellite, and eventually, recording.

I never got a saorview box and very very rarely look at rte player but I do get the licence every year. It is a shakedown but what can you do. The only time I go online is at home on the laptop so this new gimmick is of no use to me.

The Connect box is obviously not for you.

It is intended to make access to RTE TV services easy by providing simple access to RTE content via broadcast, RTE player (which is highly integrated), via off air recording, and access to FTA satellite.

I have found the connect box to be good. I've used the on demand alot with world cup and GAA and watched some other shows also. Obviously, it will require improvements but the more that use it the more feedback they get from the box, allowing the system to improve.

    Bought one of these today.

When trying to play ANY of the on-demand shows I get this error:

the service is having issues a problem occurred while trying to play this video

    What am I doing wrong?

I just do the typical it solution. Turn it off, turn it on.

Box needs to be connected to wi fi for on demand services

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,436 ✭✭✭One_Of_Shanks

yeah its connected to wifi. Says signal strength OK. Maybe its not strong enough signal to carry it? Weird though coz my laptop gets a good signal in this same room and can stream stuff.
I tried rebooting and all that. Also says Download error when I try to update software on it.

Cant plug in directly to ethernet coz router is downstairs

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,828 ✭✭✭Tigerandahalf

I had issues with connecting via the wifi. In the end I got a pair of homeplugs - plug one into a socket beside the router and the other into a socket beside the tv - you then have an ethernet connection. If buying get the ones with the socket in them, it means you don't lose a socket.

Any word on recording being added? The date was July?

I emailed Saorview this morning to inquire when recording would be added.

    They replied as follows:

"The recording feature is due to be added to The Powerpoint Saorview Connect box at the end of July. This will be added via. software update. You will need to add external memory to avail of this feature."

    I hope this helps.

 OMG they cannot even get that right!

So for those that bought it when it was €200, they are gonna have to spend at least another €50 for an external hard drive to avail of the recording feature. God that box was well overpriced and stil is

They did get it right. A USB key or a USB hard disc is still a form of memory.

It isn't .. it's storage. Commonly misused term, particularly when describing smartphones ... 64GB of memory. It hurts my eyes.

Trying to search the nearly 2000 replies,
Has the box got a combined EPG for Saorview & FTA yet?

No and it never will have.

There no EPG on FTA satellite, only now and next so you cannot have an EPG. The EPG is the property of either Freesat or Sky. RTE will not allow any dodgy dealing with the box.

So never going to be an EPG unless they do a deal with Freesat. Possible but unlikely.

    You refer to The EPG!
You need to clarify what you really mean.

Yes Sky has an EPG which is under their copyright.
Freesat has an EPG which is equally owned by them.

I have an EPG here which is not subject to either of those, so for me 'the EPG' is what I have here.

If the Connect box was not tied to Freesat then it could have an EPG of its own, but having tied it to Freesat it is shameful that it does not use the Freesat EPG.
Maybe that will change when the update arrives which is supposed to properly enable the satellite functions of the box.

    Well, yes.

Saorview are not going to put any satellite EPG onto the Connect box. The software is not open and they will not be authorising any add-ons, which includes EPG. 2RN have a very narrow view on their obligations regarding IP rights.

The tie-up with Freesat is for the software, not the Freesat satellite system.

That appears to imply there might be something shady around creating their own EPG, which I do not understand.
Once they did not copy a protected (by copyright) database or copy the method of display of the data then there would be no cause for concern.
