Ah Mate. that`s really unfortunate. Sorry to hear that. At least you now know whats causing it...not much consolation, I know. Fingers crossed for you that it`ll only take the 6 weeks. Keep up the cycling and hope to hear good news from you soon.

**Blows the dust off the log**

    Thursday 20th

    (2m) 3.2k @ 6:36/km

    Aaaaaaaannnnnddd Im back!

91 days since I last slipped on a pair of runners and went out for a run.
Was getting a bit too used to the cycling shoes! It wasn't nice not being able to run, especially after the buzz I had after finishing my first marathon, but there's worse times to be injured than winter I suppose, and having been so busy with college the past 3 months, not sure how much free time I would have had anyway! But its good great to be back!:D

So it looks like I have finally got over the hip/groin injury I picked up after the marathon. So going to ease myself back into things gently now and try and keep injury free.

Just out for a test run really tonight, to see how it felt. Headed into the Phoenix Park on the way home and did an easy paced lap of the 15 acres, staying on grass/mud for this one! Have told myself I won't be making any comparisons of past performance with any runs for a while, so not really going to worry about pace/distance, just going to get out and run a couple of easy runs each week and take it from there. Though, the one and only comparison I will note between today's run and pre-DCM days is my avg. heart rate......slightly elevated from before (i.e. was 125bpm on a similar paced run before the injury compared to 137bpm today). A slight loss in fitness, but nothing major, so looks like the cycling helped keep the fitness up to an acceptable level!:o

Fingers crossed this will be the beginning of a good years running!

    Welcome back:D
What are the plans for the year? DCM?

    I know, its a long time!

Not making any big commitments like just yet, at least until I get back into the swing of things. Would like to do the Athlone Half though this year, have heard great things about it!

Yeah in some ways it's nice not to have a big commitment like we had with dcm last year. Nice to just take it as it comes and do what you want to do.
Good to have something to work towards all the same. I'm thinking Athlone must be flat then if you've heard great things about it!

A big commitment, but definitely worth it though! You planning on doing it again this year?

I'd be very dissapointed if Athlone wasn't flat.....they do call it the "flatline" after all! :)

A little bit stiff around the hip joint/groin area today.......hopefully its just because I havent been out running in a while and its not reoccurring!!:(

Yes it's the plan but only if things go to plan in the next few months. It's not the be-all-and-end-all like last year.
    Good luck with Athlone training!

Hi Rob, welcome back and good luck with the training. Im considering that Athlone half too, depends on if I sign up for DCM or not. If I decide to do marathon I will probably do the Athlone 3/4 m, some feckers told me that was flat last year and it is not flat.:(

    Welcome back Rob.
I can confirm that Athlone Half is as flat as you're going to find. Did it last year and really enjoyed it, so would definitely recommend it. Obviously, it being Ireland, these are country roads with the usual ups and downs, but nothing any way serious. ;)

Hope the body is recovered and you get to enjoy your running again.

    Thanks Emer,

Hopefully ill be in good shape again by the time it comes around. No short term plans as of yet!

Any plans yourself for 2014, got any goal races in mind?

No running today, but did 40km on the bike. Lovely day for it, would have liked to be running, but going to keep the cycling up for a bit longer, at least until I get fully back into the swing of things!

I'm doing Connemara half in April and the next confirmed race is Frankfurt Marathon in October. Not looking for a time or anything but it should be a bit of a laugh anyway ;)

Hope you're on the road to recovery.

    Saturday 8th

    (2.5m) 4k @ 5:52/km - AVG HR 143 BPM

Kind of loosely sticking to getting out once a week for the first couple of weeks back. So out again yesterday, a little further than previous runs, at an easy enough pace. Zero discomfort post run, a good sign as I had a little stiffness/soreness for a day or two after the last two runs.

Also still cycling a bit to keep active on non running days, and just shy of 100km on the bike this week!

Hey man glad to see you are back running! Hope we can organise some morning run again in the park probably after your stay in France? I'm running the half marathon in Wicklow in 2 weeks, I can't wait for it!

Yeah we should definitely get out for a run again, not heading to France until the end of April so maybe even meet up some time before then!

Good luck with the race so, looks like a good one....hows the training been going so far?

Training has been good so far, missed few runs in January as I had a bad chesty cough I could not get rid of. It seems to have disappeared after a good 6 weeks! I should have stopped running earlier and it would have cleared quicker but I just could not stop myself... I ran 18.5km yesterday which is my longest run since...DCM! planning a 19km this Sunday, trying to get as much hill as possible but ideally I should have trained in Wicklow!

Let me know when you are fit for a 10-12km + and we should meet :)

Id love to be running those distances now! Looks like youve progressed the dsitances nice and easy then since DCM if your up to 18/19km now! I remember there being plenty of hills mixed into our long runs in the park back in Sep/Oct......maybe you've forgotten where they were?:P

Yeah, it might actually be a while before Im back up to 10/12km myself, but ill definitely let you know.....or maybe just tag on to the end of a run with you for a shorter distance or something!

    Tuesday 11th

    (2.2m) 3.5k @ 5:55/km - AVG HR ??? BPM

Short, easy run in the Park after work. Forgot my HR monitor!

Would have liked to do a little bit more, but legs were tired after a long day on my feet in work, so didnt want to push it. Will head out again for something similar on either Thursday or Friday I think!

    Friday 14th

    (1.8m) 5.3k @ 6:11/km - AVG HR 138bpm

    5K WOOHOOOO!!!:)

My injury to 5k plan has reached its peak! .......only took 4 months!

Did this one in St Anne's Park. Nice and easy on the grass again, (still afraid to get back on the roads/paths yet!). Finished it off with a 5min cool down jog and then 5 min walk! Delighted to be back up to 5k and my legs feel good today, with no signs of any post run pain in the injured area, so all good so far! Will probably keep around this distance for a couple of weeks, and will try to get out for a Parkrun in the next few weekends, just to get around the course - not going to race it!

Going to settle in on the couch for the day now and stick on the rugby!

    Sunday 16th

    (3.2m) 4k @ 6:40/km (+1k Cool Down @ 7.15/km) - AVG HR 130bpm

Out for another very easy 5k this evening. Third time out this week, all going well! Did 4k at a very very easy pace, and then slowed it up even more for the last one just to cool down a bit.....very difficult to run that slowly though, and pretty sure that was the slowest km Ive ever done!

Also did about 20min on my bike in the am!

    Wednesday 19th

    (2.5m) 3k @ 6:00/km (+1k Cool Down @ 6:25/km) - AVG HR 135bpm

4k again this evening. I am commuting to work by bike at the moment (~25km a day), and will be for another 6 weeks or so, and trying to fit in some easy runs in the evening afterwards. So was straight out the door after getting off the bike! Nicely warmed up, and legs didn't feel too tired at all! Nothing too exciting though, just tipping away, slowly racking up the miles until I'm in shape for racing again! It's great that its still bright out in the evening time when I get out, although it seems like I've turned into a fairweather runner after missing out on the winter months!:P

Said it before, but I'll say it again.....I'm so happy to be back out running these days!:D
