“Without music, life would be a mistake.”

“In individuals, insanity is rare; but in groups, parties, nations and epochs, it is the rule.”

"He who has a why to live for can bear almost any how"

“Ah, women. They make the highs higher and the lows more frequent.”

In all seriousness lads. Ten thousand years of the written word and the most quoted person ever is a 20 year old cartoon clownman?

Marilyn Monroe if some of the doses on Facebook are anything to go by.

No offence to the woman, because by many accounts she was quite intelligent- but those who quote her generally aren't. To put it mildly.

In fairness, there's a Homer Simpson quote suitable for nearly every situation imaginable.

    Ditto Father Ted.

I'd have today that Valerie Solonas, author of the Scum Manifesto (and the woman who shot Andy Warhol) and arguably spawned the radical Feminist movement would have to be up there

    http://en.m.wikiquote.org/wiki/Valerie_Solanas

She didn't pull her punches :)

"The male is a biological accident: the y(male) gene is an incomplete x(female) gene, that is, has an incomplete set of chromosomes. In other words, the male is an incomplete female, a walking abortion.... To be male is to be deficient, emotionally limited; maleness is a deficiency disease and males are emotional cripples."

"Eaten up with guilt, shame, fears and insecurities and obtaining, if he's lucky, a barely perceptible physical feeling, the male is, nonetheless, obsessed with screwing; he'll swim a river of snot, wade nostril-deep through a mile of vomit, if he thinks there'll be a friendly pussy awaiting him. He'll screw a woman he despises, any snaggle-toothed hag, and, further, pay for the opportunity. Why? Relieving physical tension isn't the answer, as masturbation suffices for that. It's not ego satisfaction; that doesn't explain screwing corpses and babies."

She has a million and one other such pearls of wisdom. What a delight she must have been ;)

Shakespeare would be pretty high too.
An American, when asked what he thought of a production of Hamlet that he had just been to said he didn't think it was all that good because it was full of old clichés that he had heard a hundred times before.

I agree, but I find quite alot of her quotes very irritating, kinda painting women in this dainty cute little light.

    Pedantry follows

I'm willing to bet if I quoted
“This above all: to thine own self be true,
And it must follow, as the night the day,
Thou canst not then be false to any man.”
And then ascribed it to Hamlet there would be people on here jumping all over me to point out that it was actually William Shakespeare who wrote it yet there is no-one pointing out that all of the Homer Simpson quotations should be ascribed to the writers and not the cartoon character (until now)
