    George Orwell

" Speaking the Truth in times of universal deceit is a revolutionary act.

" Every generation imagines itself to be more intelligent than the one that went before it, and wiser than the one that comes after it. "

I'd have today that Valerie Solonas, author of the Scum Manifesto (and the woman who shot Andy Warhol) and arguably spawned the radical Feminist movement would have to be up there

    http://en.m.wikiquote.org/wiki/Valerie_Solanas

She didn't pull her punches :)

"The male is a biological accident: the y(male) gene is an incomplete x(female) gene, that is, has an incomplete set of chromosomes. In other words, the male is an incomplete female, a walking abortion.... To be male is to be deficient, emotionally limited; maleness is a deficiency disease and males are emotional cripples."

"Eaten up with guilt, shame, fears and insecurities and obtaining, if he's lucky, a barely perceptible physical feeling, the male is, nonetheless, obsessed with screwing; he'll swim a river of snot, wade nostril-deep through a mile of vomit, if he thinks there'll be a friendly pussy awaiting him. He'll screw a woman he despises, any snaggle-toothed hag, and, further, pay for the opportunity. Why? Relieving physical tension isn't the answer, as masturbation suffices for that. It's not ego satisfaction; that doesn't explain screwing corpses and babies."

She has a million and one other such pearls of wisdom. What a delight she must have been ;)

Shakespeare would be pretty high too.
An American, when asked what he thought of a production of Hamlet that he had just been to said he didn't think it was all that good because it was full of old clichés that he had heard a hundred times before.

Marilyn Monroe if some of the doses on Facebook are anything to go by.

No offence to the woman, because by many accounts she was quite intelligent- but those who quote her generally aren't. To put it mildly.

I agree, but I find quite alot of her quotes very irritating, kinda painting women in this dainty cute little light.

    Pedantry follows

I'm willing to bet if I quoted
“This above all: to thine own self be true,
And it must follow, as the night the day,
Thou canst not then be false to any man.”
And then ascribed it to Hamlet there would be people on here jumping all over me to point out that it was actually William Shakespeare who wrote it yet there is no-one pointing out that all of the Homer Simpson quotations should be ascribed to the writers and not the cartoon character (until now)

Lemmy has to be up there:

"Apparently people don't like the truth, but I do like it; I like it because it upsets a lot of people. if you show them enough times that their arguments are bullsh*t then maybe just once, one of them will say "oh wait a minute I was wrong" I live for that happening, rare I assure you."

"That was a great time, the summer of '71, I can't remember it, but I'll never forget it"

"Fu*k this 'don't speak ill of the dead' sh*t, people don't become better when they are dead; you just talk about them as if they are. but it's not true, people are still assholes, they are just dead assholes"

"I don't understand people who believe that if you ignore something, it'll go away. That's completely wrong - if it's ignored, it gathers strength. Europe ignored Hitler for twenty years. As a result, he slaughtered a quarter of the world"

"Inherited hatred (i.e hatred your parents schooled you in) is not only stupid, it is destructive - why make your only driving force hate? Seems really f*cking dumb to me"

"if you think you are too old to rock and roll then you are"

DIDnt he say something along the lines of..

' Islam is as dangerous in a man as rabies in a dog '

    cant find the exact quote.
    will google

    from Wiki

How dreadful are the curses which Mohammedanism lays on its votaries! Besides the fanatical frenzy, which is as dangerous in a man as hydrophobia in a dog, there is this fearful fatalistic apathy. The effects are apparent in many countries.
