its nice to get a win at this level, because after last year, you were on a hiding to nothing, hot favourites in the bookies, up in Ennis, I always find the first night out and even the second, with minors is a minefield, you cannot tell what way they will react, so if they react badly and you win, well at least you've had a look at what you have and it gives you great scope for the next night, i guarantee that there is possibly 3/4 guys that did not start for whatever reason are now in the mix to make a start the next day, as was mentioned before , last year v tipp started kevin daly wing back, i think young sam o neill was in full, Bennett did not start, team looked nervous never got to the flow of the game, it was not a bad tipp side, few really bad mistakes, if i remember correctly we even had a different goalie, all these issues can be ironed out now, as you have time, all the injuries will be back[hopefully], and we'll push on.
We are lucky in a way to have got clare, i would expect whoever comes out of Limerick, Cork and tipp will be overwhelming favourites to beat waterford, nice way to have it, if based on reports,we can show a bit more urgency and last years guys or anyone can show a bit of leadership, then who knows the hurling is there, would love to have been there but half 6 in Ennis on a wednesday evening not a hope.

Derek Lyons ( Duingarvan ) is the manager. The policy of having the management team staying with the team from under 14 up to minor is the reason last years team isnt there.
Is there a whole new set of selectors or have they carried over at least some of the experience from last years back room team

Thought a lot of the players looked nervous last night on both sets of teams, understandable i supose , theyre only kids at the end of the day. Clare full forward was dangerous thhroughout, a big unit , well over 6ft 2 anyway, theyre guy at midfield no8 with the red helmet was a nice hurler too, hurled some amount of ball and was good for the breaks too, and galvin at wing forward looked good for them also, I felt myself that waterford won the game with the subs they made and the switch of darragh lyons to midfield. Waterfords midfield was on the night poor but im sure they will improve, . The waterford half back line/midfield didnt supply enough ball into the inside line and a result curran had to at times come to the half forward line to look for ball. Curran himself only back from injury so the break will do the waterford lads no harm at all. The fact that waterford won the game playing so badly can only be a positive, and add to this roche and sutton who are definate starters on this team will be back from injury the next day it bodes well for our chances. The lad Meaney who came on scored 1-1, a great point and then a goal from a defensive error, proved the winning of the game.

    Waterford 1-13 Clare 0-11

This game was played in overcast but dry conditions with a stiff and awkward wind blowing more or less down the pitch. The small crowd (1,400) suggested little local confidence in the Clare team.

Only six of the Waterford team which won the Tony Forristal tournament four years ago started this game (Eddie Hayden, Shane Murray, Edmond O’Halloran, Conor Gleeson, Shane Ryan, Patrick Curran). Of the others, Colm Roche, Craig Brown, Jack McCarthy (man of the match in the Forristal final) and MJ Sutton are injured and should be back in the mix for the Munster semi-final. Mark Shanahan was a sub last night and Seán Daly is on the extended panel. I think Dessie Hutchinson is playing soccer in England. I have no information on the remaining two, Seán Colfer and Adam Crawford. Two of the substitutes in the 2010 final, Shane Bennett and Cormac Curran were key members of last year’s All-Ireland winning team and started last night. This means that seven of last night’s starting team did not feature in 2010.

Despite playing against the wind, Waterford started very brightly last night. Cormac Curran won some good ball at centre forward and Edmond O’Halloran was making an impact at centre field. A couple of goal chances were created but missed, while a couple of Patrick Curran frees put Waterford two up.

Then the whole game changed. Waterford seemed to relax or lose their focus and relapsed into poor decision-making. Clare upped their intensity and took over at centre field and in their half back line. They dominated the remainder of the half but seven wides (to Waterford’s three) and some good Waterford defending meant they only went in at half time two points up (0-7 to 0-5).

Waterford again started the second half brightly with a Curran free and an excellent point from Shane Ryan (now at full forward). With the wind at their backs one hoped at this stage that they would drive on to a convincing victory. Not a bit of it. Clare took over again as Waterford struggled to stay in the game. By the 45th minute the home side were three points ahead, 0-11 to 0-8.

You could see the Clare team visibly gaining in confidence as the game progressed, while Waterford went in the opposite direction, their play littered with poor ball control, poor striking and poor decision-making. A classic example was when Patrick Curran, with a handy enough free 45 metres out on the left, instead of going for the point, opted to play a crossfield ball to Seán Hogan who, under pressure from the defence, shot wide. Clare were winning the 50-50 tussles and schemozzles hands down, displayed better ball control and determination, were first to the breaking ball and regularly disrupted attempted Waterford pickups.

The period between the 45th and 55th minutes were crucial to the eventual outcome of the game. Clare owned the ball in this period but failed to score, sending a series of shots wide of the goal (they ended up the half with six wides to Waterford’s three, for a total of 13 to 6).

Then, as they used to say in the old “follier-up” films, with one bound Waterford were free. Their revival was sparked off by a marvellous pointed free by Shane Bennett from his own 65 metre line. Substitute Eddie Meaney then landed a great point with Darragh Lyons doing likewise a minute later, and a further excellent point by corner forward Peter Hogan amazingly put Waterford ahead. The roof really fell in on Clare in the 57th minute when one of their defenders lost possession under pressure in his own square, and in the ensuing melee supersub Meaney apparently toe-poked the ball to the net. Thus Waterford scored 1-4 in less than four minutes.

There were still five minutes to play (as the referee allowed three minutes of extra time) and Clare sought desperately to retrieve the game. However, their tactic of trying to run the ball in from midfield (when letting in early ball might have been wiser) made little impression on a dogged Waterford defence, and Patrick Curran closed the game out with a sublime point in the last minute.

For a team that won in the end, Waterford had hardly any stand-out performers on the night (ironically, Clare had several). Shane Bennett provided a lot of leadership at centre back, and his lengthy striking, especially from frees, brought relief for a beleaguered defence. I thought the defence in general, and particularly the full backs, did well, given the amount of pressure they were under. They worked very hard with hooking and blocking so that Clare created very few clear goal chances. However, the half back line never really functioned as an attacking unit. Full back Eddie Hayden was under a lot of pressure from Clare’s tall full forward Aaron Shanagher, but little enough came from the possession the latter secured, and Hayden stuck diligently to his difficult task right through.

Goalkeeper Billy Nolan got little enough to do, but performed his basic tasks effectively and cleared his lines well on a couple of occasions. A tall lad, he did well keeping forwards away from balls dropping wide near the posts, and his puckouts were good, especially against the wind in the first half.

I thought it was strange placing Darragh Lyons at corner back, given that he normally operates as an extra man around the midfield area, especially since it meant omitting Michael Cronin, the very experienced corner back from the Dungarvan Colleges and Dungarvan CBS All-Ireland winning teams from last year. As it was, things didn’t go well for Lyons on the night, even when he moved out (belatedly, I thought) to midfield in the 38th minute (with Cronin coming on in the corner). However, he deserves great credit for the super point he scored in the late surge, as he had hit a terrible miss just a couple of minutes earlier.

Apart from the opening minutes, Waterford struggled at midfield right through, and Conor Gleeson never featured. At right half forward, Joe Allen suffered an early injury which necessitated a temporary substitution, and although he came back on he failed to get going and was replaced by Seán Hogan after 25 minutes. Cormac Curran got an amount of possession but frequently was unable to use it due to being surrounded by several Clare players. Captain Shane Ryan, apart from his point, had no impact on the game.

The Waterford full forwards looked early on that they could cause a lot of problems if they got the possession, but very little decent ball came their way. Andy Molumby was sacrificed when Michael Cronin came on to free up Darragh Lyons for a midfield role. Patrick Curran was, understandably, quite short of match practice and can be expected to be a much greater threat the next day.

It is obvious that Waterford can play much better than what we saw last night. A lot of the players were new to hurling at this level and will have learned from the experience, particularly in terms of speed of thought and action, and intensity. The team will also benefit from the return of their injured players, and perhaps from the fact that not too much will be expected of them the next day. With young players like these, the fact that they were given odds of 4/9 by Paddy Power to win last night’s game may have had a negative psychological effect.

Referee Johnny Murphy of Limerick was very strict in penalising overcarrying and other technical offences but he was consistent and fair in the application of the rules. Waterford did a lot of fouling (particularly jersey tugs) and he consistently penalised them, quite rightly, for this. I didn’t take exception to any of his decisions on the night and overall thought he was one of the better under-age referees Waterford have had in recent years.

Waterford: Billy Nolan (Roanmore); David Prendergast (Lismore); Eddie Hayden (Ballygunner); Darragh Lyons (Dungarvan) (0-1); Conor Prunty (Abbeyside); Shane Bennett (Ballysaggart) (0-1, free); Shane Murray (Cappoquin); Conor Gleeson (Fourmilewater); Edmond O’Halloran (Clashmore) (0-1); Joe Allen (Dungarvan); Cormac Curran (Brickeys); Shane Ryan (De La Salle) (0-1); Peter Hogan (Ballygunner (0-1); Patrick Curran (Dungarvan) (0-7, 6 frees); Andy Molumby (Cappoquin).

Substitutes: Seán Hogan (Passage) for Allen (25); Michael Cronin (Ardmore) for Molumby (38); Jack Mullaney (Stradbally) for O’Halloran (50); Eddie Meaney (De La Salle) (1-1) for Ryan (50); John Kennedy (Ballyduff Lower) for Cormac Curran (59).

Serious win there. Cork are looking good too so that should be some semi final. No harm in avoiding that side of the draw...

they fb line were under savage pressure throughout the game, but they fared well in fairness to them, even hayden who was on prob clares best hurler stuck to the task and didnt do too bad despite being on a pysically bigger player. no2 prendergast done ok too, tidy player and quick but clearances need 2 improve. lyons was moved out to midfield where it seems he is more suited to, cronin from ardmore came on and is a very tight marker, will prob start the next day. glesson from fmw looked nervous, he is a talented player however , maybe a move into the forwards might suit him more. Winning playing badly can only be a good thing for this team, they have 10 weeks now to sort out the team, few fellas back from injury too so all looks bright.

Jack McCarthy will be FB the next day if he's fit and will dramtically improve that line. Can't see him being smaller than anyone else...

I'd like to see McCarthy centre back and move Bennett further forward, think we might need a bit more punch up there. When is the first round of the club championship? Can't be far off. Anyone reckon Dungarvan will give it a good rattle this year?

... Lyons should be out the field have more of an impact out there nd maybe Cronin in corner.. I'd put sutton centre back and Bennett on the wing .. Roche full back next day maybe but we need another scoring forward so maybe put him up there.. Will Hayden do full back??

Jack McCarthy was injured for the start of minor training but is now hurling again. He's been playing senior for DLS and is training away with them so I don't know why he wasn't on the panel for that game he was fullback for their county winning U21 team in December but he's not even training with the county minor team now so it's hard to see him come straight in for next game and start

2 weeks, round 1 in the football starting tonight and round 2 is next week!

Give Dungarvan 2/3 years they'll be very strong

The WATERFORD minor football team to play TIPPERARY on Wednesday night at 7.00pm in the Munster Minor Football championship was announced following training tonight.

    1 Kevin Dwane Ballinacourty
    2 Ciaran O'Neill Brickey Rangers
    3 Jack Guiry Nire
    4 Donnachadha Kirwan Dungarvan
    5 Micheal Shine Ballinameela
    6 Edmond O'Halloran Clashmore Kinsalebeg
    7 Jack Mullaney Stradbally
    8 Cormac Curran Brickey Rangers
    9 Conor Prunty Ballinacourty
    10 Aaron Donnelly Dungarvan CAPTAIN
    11 Conor Murray Rathgormack
    12 Joe Allen Dungarvan
    13 Dylan Guiry Nire
    14 Conor Gleeson Nire
    15 Darragh Lyons Dungarvan

Interestingly 7 players also started for the hurlers in the win over Clare last week. This has to be a good sign going forward, best footballing talent making themselves (being made) available for selection

More interesting is that there's 14 from the west. Probably another case of throwing in a bunch of players together with little or no preparation although I'd love to be corrected on that.

Your probably right but there is some serious talent on that team. Gleeson and Mullanney in particular real prospects although both on the hurling aswell. Im not sure what Tipp are like this year in comparision to other years but they will have more preperation done anyway thats for sure.

only one player from the east of the county in starting 15? Senior clubs DLS, Gaultier & St. Saviours with no one? (even on the panel??) & also traditional football strongholds Tramore, Bonmahon etc.

Why is this? No players up to scratch or is it simply the eastern board isnt doing enough to promote football or is it the clubs or a mix??!
