Get used to your new place, explore Maynooth, go out, meet new people, have great craic.

Orientation week is a good time for that kind of stuff too. You'll be more prepared once lectures start too.

    I fully endorse this statement

It's easy, you just run at close-knit groups of strangers while shouting your name and hobbies, just like in this thread.

And meet people in your orientation groups and other groups. And Go out and meet people in the SU and other places. Sure I met some of my best friends just happening to be sitting outside my apt block (at 3am while they were breathing fire...)

Your orientation group is great for making friends, their gonna be in your course most likely. I remember mine, i saw a really interesting looking bloke with dreadlocks and i said to a girl i met earlier, i gotta be friends with that guy!. we are now living in the same place this year

It reminds me of how I met my best friend that changed my life in college. We sat beside each other in our first ever language lab, our tutor told us to turn to person beside us and introduce ourselves ;) It took us a long while to actually become good friends but now I know that he will be a life long friendship :)

You think you're old, I'm 22 and I'm going into 1st year, they're going to call me Grandpa and ask me in wonder what life was like before the internet.

Yea this. We tend to measure age on how long we've been in Maynooth and on these boards too. Banquo has been in Maynooth FOREVER thus why he's our resident oldie. Though I'm catching up with my 5 years!

Eh, I don't think you can really declare that you're old until you're old enough to be classed as a mature student. So you're alright for a while yet.

And I think, to be fair, that Kellie has to be winning on length of time in Maynooth, given that she's a native.
I spent a measly six years around the town. I don't think that even counts!

Anyone studying general science? Can you transfer to Biological and biomedical science after 1st year???

By the time summer exams come around I will be old enough to be considered a mature student. That day scares me

You know what I meant! University wise.

Hi I am interested in doing that as well! :D
I called the admissions office a few days ago and I was told that you're definitely able to do it! They said just to make yourself know to the biology/chemistry lectures and show you have a keen interest. Its a lot of hard work I was told and you have to do well in those labs/ exams etc. It's not impossible as people do transfer into any of the science degrees from general science in Maynooth.
At the end it your transfer is presented to the heads of the department you want to transfer into and they decide whether your allowed to transfer across. Basically from what I was told it seems that you just have to do well in first year and you may get chosen :)

Hope that helps and makes sense :P

Thanks so much :) I love chem and bio so it shouldnt be a problem, hopefully :P oh are you going into 1st year actually? It would be handy to know someone else with the same plan as me in my year :) also, would you be a 2nd year biological and biomed student or would you be transfered back into 1st year of that course??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 699 ✭✭✭Boeing777

I didn't know you could transfer from general science to biological & biomedical science. I know that you can transfer to most science degrees after first year from general, but the fact that biomed had that extra lecture each week plus their presentation project would make me think you couldn't, but you obviously can. That's something I've learned today :pac:
