The NoFap Challenge

    http://www.reddit.com/r/NoFap/

It's exactly what it says on the tin really - the reason I bring it up is because for some reason 4 or 5 lads I know have decided (independently) to give it a go in the last few weeks. Different reasons were given - one was training for a marathon and wanted the boost of extra testosterone for example, others were just curious to see if they could do it.

Is this a new thing that guys are trying? Seems like hell to me - extra hormones, extra aggro and no porn.

Anyone ever tried it? How long did you last? Question open to both sexes by the way - I'm sure it's a bit of a biological/psychological hurdle for wimminz to go cold turkey for an extended period of time too

Ah. Never realised they crossed the Indian ocean, thought they flew over continental Asia.

Even in a nonsense thread about ****, you learn something new, funny world.

I did it for all of sixth year, just to prove I could do it (June '07 to June '08)
Results were surprising. I got a lot better with girls mainly because my level of drive just skyrocketed through the roof to the point where evidently getting off became more important than whatever shyness or confidence issues I'd had holding me back :D Serious beer goggles effect as well - absolutely every girl becomes some sort of amazon goddess after you've gone a few months without it. Motivation goes through the roof as well, I actually managed to go from being the fattest kid in my year to the underweight guy everyone's telling to bulk up if possible, that was when I started lifting, joined the gym and have kept it up ever since :D

All around best year ever. Once you get past a certain point the desperation becomes less, the self control becomes stronger, and the motivational side effects are yours to enjoy. Definitely recommend it to anyone. :D

Presumably there are downsides though? Aggression perhaps - I'd presume after a few weeks you'd be willing and capable of ripping a grown man in two like a phonebook if he was blocking your line of sight to a girl! :pac:

Just completed no fap July 3 hours ago.

    Give this a watch http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wSF82AwSDiU

During the past month I have became a lot more motivated and generally feeling a lot more cheerful. Started reading novels for the first time since I was 12. Changed my diet around and starting lifting and running.

Not many addictions are good for you, and the "high" you get from fapping releases an overload of dopamine in your brain (your brain's "reward" feeling, the brain's way of telling your inner caveman "good job buddy, you just reproduced here's some pleasure"). Fapping excessively lowers the general dopamine levels in your brain (general happiness, low dopamine is usually found in those suffering from depression, social anxiety, paranoia to name a few). This is the exact same effect drugs, alcohol and ciggys have on your brain as well.

Due to that not only did I go on no fap, I haven't drank for that whole month either. Too many people on reddit and the internet think no fap is a magic pill, it's simply just a minor ingredient of that magic pill.

Can we start a separate thread maybe in the gentlemans club and kinda get an actual challenge going? I have gone into a kind of over fap stage and would like to get out of it - I cam actually feel a sense of not bothered-ness about me recently, even before this thread and I put it down to excessive fapp syndrome!

Exactly - and that is the kind of fact that actually clouds discussion on threads like this. The people who generally benefit from something like the "NoFap Challenege" are people who are genuinely addicted to it - are spending an inordinate amount of time or money on porn - and masturbation is actually taking away somehow from their day to day life.

Such people then tend to go on campaigns against porn and/or masturbation thinking that the whole world will benefit from the same choices they made. But just because an alcoholic improved their life immensely by giving up alcohol entirely - that in no way implies anyone elses life will be improved by no longer having a beer or two of a Friday night.

The problem is not masturbation. At all. The problem is addiction. And our society is rife with it. If one finds oneself engaging in ANYTHING beyond moderation and to a point that it is a detriment to the rest of ones life then one has a problem. Be that mastrubation, porn, drugs, gambling, eating, gaming or whatever.

Those of us who engage with moderation however see no "Challenege" here. Or even a point in engaging in one. Masturbation is a healthy and incorporated and moderate aspect of our lives and giving it up under the guise of a "challenege" for no reason other than to provide solidarity to those who genuinely do need to give it up - is as uninteresting as it is inane.

Those who DO have a problem however - with masturbation or any other addiction - I heartily and genuinely wish you luck on your journey.

There was a thread loosely around the subject already and judging from my memory of it I would expect interest to lower than you might expect.

Not that you will get NO interest or that it is not a good idea at all - but perhaps do not raise your expectations too high.

There was also another thread here in After Hours that might be of interest.

Gonna give this a shot, though I have some reservations as I'm a teacher.

I remember giving up before lasted a month, and with alcohol id become very aggressive, but got amazing will power for the gym.

Tried this last week, lasted 8 days.
Well worth doing if even only for the first fap after a prolonged period. It was awesome! Those 8 days were the longest I've gone in probably 15 years

Is this something people actually think about and do? Give up **** for a bit and see how long you last and actually count how many days.

Too much time time on your hands..well you do now anyway!!

I think there is a bit of a misconception around that abstaining will increase your testosterone levels. My personal opinion, and according to this, is that it doesn't.

Does anybody know of some scientific study that proves that it does increase your levels?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 58,456 ✭✭✭✭ibarelycare

Are you allowed still have sex?

I tried the 30-day challenge with some friends before, but lost on the first night  The only reason I lost is because I was thinking about NOT being able to do it and I got horny and caved! I don't know what's the longest I could go. Sometimes it could be a couple of weeks and I mightn't have even thought about it. Although I'm in a relationship so I'd be having regular sex so not sure if that counts!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 942 ✭✭✭Real Life

well i havent been trying on purpose but ive gone 5 weeks now. Il probably go a bit longer too just to see how long i can get. its probably the longest time since i started.

This challenge is only for single people, right?

    From Reddit:
An Orgasm is temporary, self-control is permanent. One brings peace, the other brings suffering. See through the temporary illusions of human life.

I assume this challenge originated from religious people. though. What the hell's wrong with a ****?

Breathing in passive smoke increases the chances of lung cancer, I suggest stop breathing in, can we have a "NoBreathingIn" challenge to support this movement?

Makes about as much sense as no fap...

no you could be right. i'm getting the silent treatment at the moment, so havent had any in the last 4 days!!! :( longest in a while, and i'm starting to believe that the longer you go without, the less you "need" it and not the other way round.

Too much of anything is a bad thing. I think you can go into sexual/adrenal exhaustion from overmasturbation which is 4-5+ times daily, AFAIK.

Sure what would I know, I'm blind

It's not the testosterone levels that benifit from abstaining prior to a major event like a Marathon. It's that the body isn't tired and has been rested.

    As Mickey said:

    "Women weaken the legs, Rock!"

It's better not to be recovering from an event, while you partake in another.

It doesn't increase levels, but helps with controlling dopamine secretion and tolerance (in addition to giving a measure of self control). You'll find stuff out there saying that once you've cracked one off, there'll be a testosterone increase for a brief period afterwards.

The dopamine tolerance goes down the more you feed it (like alcohol), so it takes much more to give you that "feel good" feeling you get. Abstaining for a few days/weeks will help to reset it to a lower tolerance level. That seems to be the real reason to take on such a challenge.
