Weve crossed a line if were showing this TV show in schools to start “ conversations” that harangue young lads to check their Toxic Masulinity. The same middle aged female teachers would hit the roof if they were told to teach girls to behave themselves. End rant

To be fair, there is absolutely nothing wrong with disagreeing with, or disliking Trump. Even hating him, while a bit of a waste of energy in my opinion, is perfectly fine. In fact, hating Trump (or at least pretending to) is probably a prerequisite to work in public broadcasting in Ireland today. However, we don't need Pat to prove it every 5 minutes. We know he hates Trump, everyone knows it, he can relax, he tries too hard to keep letting everyone know. If the first item on Pat's show tomorrow was the welcome appearance of spring blooms in the countryside, Pat would inevitably find some way of linking in his hatred of Trump. It's tiring to be honest, and smacks of someone with issues trying too hard. Yes, I could turn it off, but I like to listen to talk radio in my car sometimes, and the choice is fairly limited. It's Pat, or someone who wants to be Pat basically.

To summarise, hate Trump all you want Pat, knock yourself out, just please limit it to, say, twice per show. That will still let everyone know, but will allow more time for actual discussion.

trump could announce decisions tomorrow that could prove very bad for the Irish economy, which in turn will affect anyone paying taxes in this country. But lets have another song from Paul Harrington instead of talking about him ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,628 ✭✭✭Cole

Ah c'mon…nobody's saying that he shouldn't cover Trump. That's a complete misrepresentation of what (most) are saying here about how Pat covers all things Trump.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,552 ✭✭✭✭2smiggy

ah I know he talks about trump way too much. I'd prefer a happy medium to be honest. But if it's a case of little coverage of trump, or a lot of coverage of trump, I'd take a lot of coverage. To be honest there are not many on Irish radio with the intellect of Pat. I'd prefer Pat to be discussing trump, rather than Joe Duffy or Andrea Gilligan !!

Go back and read my post.

Not only do I not say that Pat shouldn't talk about Trump, I suggest he discuss Trump twice per show.

Please don't utterly misrepresent a post for cheap likes.

The EU could (and have) made many decisions that are bad for the Irish economy, and will make more, possibly tomorrow.
Does Pat obsess about Ursula von der Leyen or António da Costa?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,552 ✭✭✭✭2smiggy

i read it, nothing for 'cheap likes'. I don't see why he should limit his discussion of trump to two times per show to keep you happy ? listen to something else perhaps if it's not suitable for you ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 577 ✭✭✭NattyO

It's not "discussion" that's the problem. It's the constant references and snide remarks. "Ah, here's a piece about lovely little bunnies in Phoneix Park. I bet Trump hates lovely little bunnies. I'll bet all literal nazis hate little bunnies. Nazis like Trump are stupid. I bet Trump would deport all the lovely bunnies if he could."

It is near constant, and rarely has anything to do with the subject matter in hand. It is most certainly not discussion, by any measure of the word.

Ah the old "listen to something else if you don't like it" that I already addressed in my post.

He doesn't have to do anything to keep me happy, but I find it strange that you feel an Irish radio show should be so obsessed with the president of a foreign country, that mentioning him numerous times in every show is normal or desirable. Just because you share Pat's weird obsession, doesn't mean everyone should.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,552 ✭✭✭✭2smiggy

He wouldn't be so obsessed if it didn't have a chance to cause a devastating effect on all our lives. I also don't share any 'weird obsession' . Again, feel free to turn to something more suitable for yourself if it's upsetting you.

Will Pat dragging him into every discussion mitigate that in some way?

A meteor strike, a global pandemic, or an international financial meltdown could also have a devastating effect on all our lives, funny that he doesn't keep mentioning those (and given that we've been hearing for the past 12 years about how Trump is going to end the world any day now, they seem about as likely, or perhaps in some cases, more so).

I'll listen to what I want, and discuss it in a thread set up for that very purpose if I wish, thank you.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,552 ✭✭✭✭2smiggy

when a meteor strike, a global pandemic, or an international financial meltdown happen ,I am sure he will talk about them. trump is happening now. anyway I have no desire to discuss any further either.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 577 ✭✭✭NattyO

Trump is happening now, but isn't affecting the lives of anyone in Ireland in any way, and hasn't for the past 12 years (unless you count those he has employed in his golf resort in Clare, and the journalists who get to churn out articles about him).

What is endless waffle from radio presenters and their guests (even politicians) going to acheive in regards to Trump? Absolutelyt Zilch.

Politicians telling us on all radio stations and Tv recently, that they will focus on the 6th biggest investor, ryanair , kerry group etc but realistically any measures to counteract Trump will be at a European level so their influence is minimal…never mind an old codger on Newstalk having any impact at all.

Mind you, I can t see Von Der Leyen and Co doing much for us either…they've had an issue with our taxation setup for years too. If anything they'll probably make it worse and protect the likes of car manufacturing and the like for the bigger European economies.

Waffle from Pat and his guests about how bad trump is, will change nothing..

you think putting 25% tariffs on the pharmaceutical industry isn't going to affect everyone in this country ? find someone intelligent to explain it to you.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 577 ✭✭✭NattyO

I thought we weren't allowed to throw insults around here?

Has he put 25% tariffs on the pharmaceutical industry here? I hadn't heard? Are all the plants closed down? Did everyone lose their jobs?

Mod: Can you all please move on from "how often Trump is/should be mentioned", it's getting tedious and uncivil.

That's because people don't really care that much about the GAA finals - the attendance is pitiful and declining all the time, depsite the pretence that's it's supposed to be "who we are" or some horseshyte. It's all a myth.

There were more people at the Connacht v Munster URC league game game in Castlebar, than the Kerry v Mayo league final in Croke Park and more people are interested in your average Premier League match, than these GAA games.

Pat said the Maga crowd have been badly educated for the last two generations, so presumably he thinks the generation who believed in racial segregation were better educated.

And he thinks America will have no workers to do the pharma jobs if they went back to the States. Dan O'Brien points out gently that America has well over 300 million people.

Is Pat Kenny gone a bit stupid?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 577 ✭✭✭NattyO

The poor man has lost any semblance of journalistic integrity or neutrality when it comes to America at the moment. To be fair, he's not much of an outlier on that front in Irish media, it's just that Pat sees himself as the Big Daddy of Irish media, and wants to be more hyperbolic and hysterical than anyone else.

At times he's coming across as passive aggressive. Only for he's the big man of Irish media, he seems to get away with it. His discussions are poor and he's coming across as out of his depth.

He says as well that American companies set up here because we speak English and for entry to the single market.

The first and only reason they set up in Ireland is because of our dodgy tax laws.

I am by no means a gardener -.(I enjoy cutting grass with my ride on mower that's about it) - but I always like the slot that Pa lt used to have with Padraig Horkan from.the garden centre in Galway.

In the last few months that slot has been replaces by Diarmuid Gavin reading us out what are essentially Wikipedia entries about "famous" gardens.

Hope they get Padraig back and get rid of Gavin.

Email the show about it. They may not be fully aware that Padráig is popular with listeners

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,661 ✭✭✭roshje

I think Padraig Horkan is either retired or semi retired.

.Good in parts but loves acting what I call the 'smart debunker' i.e the guy who can cut through all the crap and get to the nub of a subject. Plus he talks so fast it almost becomes jabbering at times . He would be a plausible successor to PK though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,628 ✭✭✭Cole

I was thinking quite similar while listening this morning. He's got that thing that Pat has, where he sometimes throws out 'impressive' facts or statistics. I presume this is from his own research/reading (or by his team), but he's sometimes very close to crossing that line of being well-read to being a bit of a show off. I still like him though, and I think he does this better than Pat, who's become a bit too much of a 'know it all'.

Where did they find that clown who didn't know how Granard (Co. Longford) is pronounced? He was talking about the first Irish-born person to play major league baseball. He was from Grann-ord, apparently.

Did you never read any Ross O'Carroll Kelly books? Some people do actually talk like that.

"Ross, I can't get an uber, can you come collect me at the Dort station. I feel miserable, I had to sit beside someone with a Lidl bag! "

I was going to use Clonard as an example of how he weighted the word but thought that might be a bit too ecclesiastical for you heathens 😁
