Would you not be putting in the comfortline interior and armrest?
Having had a couple of mk4 golfs and driven a mk4 booora it would bug me if it didnt have the nicer seats and an armrest.

Another possible upgrade I'd want would be a GTI steeringwheel, if it were mine.

    Is coming along nicely though!

Having had almost 1 million Mk4's, I wouldn't bother with the comfortline interior. Go for the Highline at least. Comfortline isn't actually that much more comfortable and it's an asbolute **** to keep clean.

    2012 BMW F10
Full software upgrade of the car and iDrive Professional retrofit with video in motion enabled.
    Bye bye TomTom

    1.JPG

Software upgrade in progress. Power supply providing 14.8v to the car so it stays awake.

This is what happens when you fit a large screen with the standard/small radio. Not compatible. Resolution is hard coded. Not good, the new radio will fix that.

    5.JPG
    6.JPG
    7.JPG

First boot of the new radio, Navigation is disabled. It is locked by VIN number.

    8.JPG

    Latest maps installed.

    9.JPG

Navigation now enabled, maps are showing up.
Car needs to be driven for a few minutes before it resets itself and shows the right location on the map.

    10.JPG
    13.JPG

Video in motion working just fine. Also known as the KWS function (Keep the Wife Silent)

    11.JPG

Last check, all good, navigation working.

Does this count as clocking your car?

New ht leads, plugs, oil and filter for herselfs coupe.

Goes a bit better now. Discovered the exhaust flex is in bits though.

That's what I was thinking too

i think it only becomes "clocking" if you go to sell the car and intentionally with hold that information to mislead the buyer.

as it stands, he owns the car, he can do as he pleases, as can we all :pac:

Ah good. Just wanted to see as it seemed like it could cause a bit of bother. Delighted to hear it wont

The other day a neighbour called me looking for a jumpstart. He had ran out of Diesel and put more in it but managed to crank his battery flat before it started. Anyway, when I got there and opened my bonnet the cap for my power steering fluid reservoir was missing . It has always been there before and I've no idea how long it has been missing or how it could be! I was fairly disappointed that I was going to have to splash out and get one from a breakers :(

However, thanks to my genius, my cheapness and a dremel I managed to make a replacement out of the cap for a bottle of fabric softener :p:pac:

Much more fitting to the budget this car is run on :p

Car has been in garage over a week and a half now. Had to get it towed from work last Friday, flashing engine light and wouldn't go over 60/70kmph. Mechanic is clueless as to what's going on and put it into a specialist during the week. Heard it could be the ecu.... Not pumping big money into it will probably save up now for another car! 1.6 golf mk4... Had it about 3 months!! Sickened

If your golf has petrol engine, flashing EML usually means misfire. So more than likely ignition coil is dead.

Yep there was misfire and yeah it's a 1.6 petrol. I presume the mechanic would've copped that though, he said its a coil pack it needs. I'll have to sort it out this week

So one of the bulbs in the avensis behind the heater controls blew. It is a bit of a pig of a job when all your changing is just a light bulb.

    1. Have to take of the plastic trip that goes from the passengers side of the car right across the car containing the cup holder and back heater switch.
Unplug the heater leads and put the panel away
2 Unscrew 2 screws holding the trip computer down and wiggle away. Take out the three wires attached to the trip computer, you dont need to remove the hazard lights lead.
3 Give the gear stick gator a tug upwards and the panel pops out. Twist off the gear knob and the panel lifts away. Unhook the cable for the cigarette lighter.
4 there are four gold colour bolts above and below the radio/heater control units. Unscrew these. The radio and heater controls come out. Unhook wires at the back.
5 There are 4 bolts and 2 screws on each side of the radio/heater controls. Remove all of these. Then the metal piece at the side of the radio/heater controls fall away. Hold the radio steady and move the heater controls to the right and then they will slide about 5mm and separate.
    6. Unscrew 4 SILVER screws and pull the control apart.
    7. Remove bulb - they are the black circles. Might take a second to realise that they are the bulbs as most of the bulb is not visible when installed.
    8. reverse of 1-7
    9. last time I did this I realised that I forgot to do hook the radio back up right and had to go again. I didnt make that mistake this time.

The radio signal has been a bit **** recently so I was looking at the wires and all seemed well. Lets hope that it ll be ok now.

Also cleaned her inside and out, checked the oil (will be changing it in a few weeks)
changed the pollen filter, took out the air filter and hit it off a wall - its clean again, pumped the tyres, topped up the screenwash.

BMStuff, really enjoy your posts, they fascinate me. As someone who dreads having to remove trim I admire your skill and fearlessness!

Can I ask you a few questions?

Do you ever have to research taking apart a dash, or is it trial and error/experience and getting stuck in?

Are some cars easier to work on than others in terms of how things are attached, if so so which are good, which are not?

Any jobs you look forward to and any you dread?

    Keep the updates coming!

I'm OK then, because I just swapped clusters without interfering with odometers. :p

Again not my car but someone elses,

Nissan Interstar, done the brakes, discs/pads, and fluid change, serviced it and fitted a starter motor to it, also needed a tyre

Cleaned up a bora and got it ready for a sump drop tomorrow because apparently I'm the "specialist" in that area now in work :pac:

I cleaned out my car tonight, ready to go to its rescuer.

It was a bit of a sad moment, knowing I'll not drive it again as I don't think I'd ever trust it again :(

Recently noticed one of rear shocks is leaking a bit. So simple decision - buy a set of new ones. Asked few questions here and there and decided to buy them:

    322595.jpg

Now waiting for message from Parcelmotel.

Will use coil springs I have (a set from donor car is currently in use, so original ones of course). Will try to disassemble/assemble them myself, even though I have no spring compressors. Photos will be shot and posted later this weekend. :)

My headlights are gone all foggy looking. I've read a few guides on sanding them and then applying a clear coat. Does anyone have any experience doing this?

I also read about using toothpaste to remove the foggy deposit on the front of the lens. I tried it out today.

Here's a pick of the headlight before, to be honest the lights work excellent but it makes the car look very dated.

The tools for the job. (Missing a rag and elbow grease)

    IMG_13991_zpsace8ddf9.jpg

Toothpaste applied. Did circular motions for about 15 mins.
    IMG_14011_zpsde9b36b4.jpg

    End result.

    IMG_14031_zpsf9cd167e.jpg

They're not perfect but definitely a lot better.
