Landmarks Named After a Business

This really annoys me. How ridiculous does "The Bord Gais Energy Theatre" sound? It's the Grand Canal Theatre! The "Aviva Stadium" is Lansdowne Rd.

What got me thinking about this today is the news that 3 are taking over o2 Ireland and all o2 branding is to disappear. I assume that they're going to call the point depot "The 3 Arena" or something now as a result. It just really grinds my gears, we shouldn't allow businesses to rebrand landmark buildings; whether new, old or refurbished.

What think you AH? Are there any more examples of capitalism marking it's territory in Ireland?

But all those places are in Dublin, doesn't really bother me here in the sticks.

Aviva spent 40 million on the naming rights and shortly afterwards made 950 Irish staff redundant.

The two mightn't have been connected but I'm sure the staff were wondering why they were losing their job when the company could piss away tens of millions like that

The day I start worrying about the names people want to give inanimate objects that don't care what they are called is the day that I will absolutely nothing else to worry about.

That was in Cavan with Breffni Park, and Cavan folk would do anything for money so don't really count.

United Park, home of Drogheda United, now goes by the catchy name of Hunky Dorys Park. In comparison to that, nothing else really sounds that bad.

There are many landmark buildings worldwide that I can't imagine being called anything else. Carnagy Hall, Wembley, Croke Park. Culturally these are all massively iconic and I'd go so far as to say it'd be almost unthinkable that any of them would be called after a company.
To be honest I think it's a disgusting practice, have we lost so much respect for our country that it's ok to allow businesses who don't give a toss about the importance of these buildings to use them as advertising and implant their name in the public consciousness.

There's a Frank Sinatra Drive in downtown Las Vegas, and any number of things named after Elvis in Memphis. I don't blame companies for naming stadia etc after themselves, if you invest all that money you should at least get a little advertising out of it.

You see that's where I disagree, using a building as advertising is wrong, unless of course it's your HQ or something. Naming buildings after people is entirely different for the most part, the people you mentioned were of massive cultural significance and often there is some correlation between the purpose of the building and what that person was famous for.

It's a bit of harmless advertising and saves the organisation money. Stop making mountains out of molehills.

Same here, still takes me a moment to get what people are talking about when they say the O2.

Still call Lansdowne Rd, Lansdowne Rd as well.

There's no impetus for businesses to invest in public facilities or buildings if they get no recognition for it, and no one would know Aviva had anything to do with the building of that stadium if their name wasn't on it. In the final analysis the benefit outweighs the cost, imo.

Grand Canal Company, the name of the (capitalist) corporation which built and named the Grand Canal.
Lansdowne Road was named after one of the biggest capitalists and colonialists of the 18th century, William Petty, Lord Lansdowne and 2nd Earl of Shelburne.

    And so on.

Come on, this is your argument? The Grand Canal, two perfectly normal words that nobody associates with business whatsoever, and Lansdowne Road, a road, named after a man who had a title named after a place.

Apples and Oranges. Aviva means nothing other than an insurance company.

It's ok, if it sounds nice, like the Aviva.

But the Bord Gais Energy Theatre - :(. I thought it was a joke the first time I heard it.

Never mind the fact its about 2.5 hours away from me, i would have difficulty watching Monaghan FC seeing as they folded last year.

The central metro station in Madrid is now being sponsored by Vodafone. Don't know the terms of the deal or for how long it lasts but the fact that the signage has been changed from Sol to Vodafone Sol doesn't really bother me. I'm sure the gov are getting a pretty penny for it.

If the Luas was Sony Jervis or Microsoft Abbey Street, it might be a bit lame but with a time restriction (2 / 3 years) and money generated, many people would prob forgive it.

no such place, it's been renamed. In fairness this is just a private commercial building and is named for the main anchor tenant. This makes sense. Branding public buildings, streets and arenas is a bit different.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,033 ✭✭✭✭Richard Hillman

I think we should start selling the naming rights to of bank holidays. Dublin Airport could raise millions but there is some silly rule about naming public buildings

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,814 ✭✭✭TPD

o2 should have called it the point o2 and three could then have renamed it the point three.

Also, hope their gold sim contracts aren't revoked.

! The "Aviva Stadium" is Landsowne Rd.

Not to me. It'll always be the Royal Irish Park Stadium.

The Aviva is particularly galling. Why should they have exclusive naming rights over a stadium that was heavily financed from the public purse?

The "grand canal company" was a private company that completed the canal. Learn some flipping history.

Because the owners said "who wants to pay to name this stadium" and Aviva said "us"?

Or Strokestown Road in Longford..."City Calling Stadium"

The entire opposite however is calling a football ground "Fahy's Field". They should be relegated for this.

Welcome to the thread, why not read it and see that this has already been pointed out and I still think it's a terrible argument. "Grand" and "Canal" are two common English words, unlike Aviva etc.

You mean the Point Theatre, that opened as a commercial business less than 30 years ago? In what way is it a landmark? Because the historical figure Huey Lewis played the first gig there?

So everything should be named after common English words? Also not a great argument.
