Landmarks Named After a Business

This really annoys me. How ridiculous does "The Bord Gais Energy Theatre" sound? It's the Grand Canal Theatre! The "Aviva Stadium" is Lansdowne Rd.

What got me thinking about this today is the news that 3 are taking over o2 Ireland and all o2 branding is to disappear. I assume that they're going to call the point depot "The 3 Arena" or something now as a result. It just really grinds my gears, we shouldn't allow businesses to rebrand landmark buildings; whether new, old or refurbished.

What think you AH? Are there any more examples of capitalism marking it's territory in Ireland?

Aviva spent 40 million on the naming rights and shortly afterwards made 950 Irish staff redundant.

The two mightn't have been connected but I'm sure the staff were wondering why they were losing their job when the company could piss away tens of millions like that

I think it can work well.I lived near a sportsworld drive in Canada,Sportsworld in turn had to maintain that street saving the local councils millions.

United Park, home of Drogheda United, now goes by the catchy name of Hunky Dorys Park. In comparison to that, nothing else really sounds that bad.

There are many landmark buildings worldwide that I can't imagine being called anything else. Carnagy Hall, Wembley, Croke Park. Culturally these are all massively iconic and I'd go so far as to say it'd be almost unthinkable that any of them would be called after a company.
To be honest I think it's a disgusting practice, have we lost so much respect for our country that it's ok to allow businesses who don't give a toss about the importance of these buildings to use them as advertising and implant their name in the public consciousness.

There's a Frank Sinatra Drive in downtown Las Vegas, and any number of things named after Elvis in Memphis. I don't blame companies for naming stadia etc after themselves, if you invest all that money you should at least get a little advertising out of it.

You see that's where I disagree, using a building as advertising is wrong, unless of course it's your HQ or something. Naming buildings after people is entirely different for the most part, the people you mentioned were of massive cultural significance and often there is some correlation between the purpose of the building and what that person was famous for.

It's a bit of harmless advertising and saves the organisation money. Stop making mountains out of molehills.

There's no impetus for businesses to invest in public facilities or buildings if they get no recognition for it, and no one would know Aviva had anything to do with the building of that stadium if their name wasn't on it. In the final analysis the benefit outweighs the cost, imo.

Grand Canal Company, the name of the (capitalist) corporation which built and named the Grand Canal.
Lansdowne Road was named after one of the biggest capitalists and colonialists of the 18th century, William Petty, Lord Lansdowne and 2nd Earl of Shelburne.

Come on, this is your argument? The Grand Canal, two perfectly normal words that nobody associates with business whatsoever, and Lansdowne Road, a road, named after a man who had a title named after a place.

Apples and Oranges. Aviva means nothing other than an insurance company.
