United Park, home of Drogheda United, now goes by the catchy name of Hunky Dorys Park. In comparison to that, nothing else really sounds that bad.

    Wanna bet?

    Dick's Sporting Goods Park

Appreciate the joke but I also meant monaghan fcs ground

Stupid Irish. Get into your local team.

Never mind the fact its about 2.5 hours away from me, i would have difficulty watching Monaghan FC seeing as they folded last year.

The central metro station in Madrid is now being sponsored by Vodafone. Don't know the terms of the deal or for how long it lasts but the fact that the signage has been changed from Sol to Vodafone Sol doesn't really bother me. I'm sure the gov are getting a pretty penny for it.

If the Luas was Sony Jervis or Microsoft Abbey Street, it might be a bit lame but with a time restriction (2 / 3 years) and money generated, many people would prob forgive it.

    or Sears tower in Chichago?

no such place, it's been renamed. In fairness this is just a private commercial building and is named for the main anchor tenant. This makes sense. Branding public buildings, streets and arenas is a bit different.

I think we should start selling the naming rights to of bank holidays. Dublin Airport could raise millions but there is some silly rule about naming public buildings

o2 should have called it the point o2 and three could then have renamed it the point three.

Also, hope their gold sim contracts aren't revoked.

There's a lot of parks that could carry that name, colloquially at least :)

! The "Aviva Stadium" is Landsowne Rd.

Not to me. It'll always be the Royal Irish Park Stadium.

The Aviva is particularly galling. Why should they have exclusive naming rights over a stadium that was heavily financed from the public purse?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,212 ✭✭✭3DataModem

This really annoys me. How ridiculous does "The Bord Gais Energy Theatre" sound? It's the Grand Canal Theatre! The "Aviva Stadium" is Landsowne Rd.

The "grand canal company" was a private company that completed the canal. Learn some flipping history.

Because the owners said "who wants to pay to name this stadium" and Aviva said "us"?

Or Strokestown Road in Longford..."City Calling Stadium"

The entire opposite however is calling a football ground "Fahy's Field". They should be relegated for this.

Welcome to the thread, why not read it and see that this has already been pointed out and I still think it's a terrible argument. "Grand" and "Canal" are two common English words, unlike Aviva etc.

What got me thinking about this today is the news that 3 are taking over o2 Ireland and all o2 branding is to disappear. I assume that they're going to call the point depot "

You mean the Point Theatre, that opened as a commercial business less than 30 years ago? In what way is it a landmark? Because the historical figure Huey Lewis played the first gig there?

So everything should be named after common English words? Also not a great argument.

Thomond Park was shortlisted for a branding exercise but it never happened thankfully.

Better that than The Bertie Bowl.

My God we're a bit touchy tonight? To me and to many others it's a landmark site, first gigs, favourite gigs, whatever, it's been the most recognisable music venue in the country since it was built.

You're creating arguments that don't exist, I'm not saying that everything should have a bland name but using amenities as advertising for big corporations is sickening.
What I meant about the grand canal is that it's name has no connotations of any business. In fact your original point doesn't hold much water (:D) considering the Grand Canal Company was formed over a decade after construction of the Grand Canal began and with the sole purpose of finishing it.

Fair enough. I guess some people want stuff to be the same as it was when it was "important" to them. I still have friends who call the league cup the "Milk Cup".

But stuff changes, and we should be glad it does. Ultra short term nostalgia is fun for a while but doesn't really matter.

There are thousands of kids out there with O2 tickets pinned to the wall of their flat thinking about their first "O2 gig".

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,390 ✭✭✭IM0

the problem is they are contracted names, so when they change hands they change names everytime

the o2 will soon be the 3 or something equaly ****

pricks tbh, it will always be the point, lansdown road and croke park to the people in our circle for this exact reason.

The only people I have heard referring to their fans as 'kids' are American Rockstar A**holes.

I blame the livery companies of the City of London for starting all this fuss.

I bet none of the people in this thread would care about the name of the place if they owned it. Money talks.

    No.
The area is Blackhorse. The pub is called 'The Blackhorse Inn'.
