Just a heads up before you starting buying loads of PAL games!

PAL ps1 games are locked to 50hz. There's no way to display them correctly in 60hz. So they're forever running 17.5% slower than they're meant to and in that dreaded letterbox format.

I built up a collection of over 100 PS1 games and really regret not going straight for NTSC instead from the beginning.

Added bonus - NTSC tend to be cheaper too!

On a side note, the Playstation has one of the biggest games libraries of all time - 2,418. A complete collection would be absolute insanity! :pac:

Heres some Title I picked up this month.
Final Fantasy 7 is as common as they get but its so icon and sought after it still sells for a decent amount.

Legend Of Dragoon you can still find a few copys on ebay but its a very expensive game. Its rare but not as hard to track down
    like Hercs adventures.

Digimon World is an uncommon rpg game that is easy to track down but sells for decent amount due to it being a great
    nostalgic game.

Jinx is an common/uncommon platformer more common than Digimon world but a great platformer ! :)

By the way, if you're not convinced by the 50/60hz difference - watch this side by side comparison between a Jap and EU version of Ridge Racer.

The EU one is miles behind as it's so much slower. Most of the games are like this.

I'd agree with o1s1n, if you are only starting your collection now...getting NTSC would be the way to go. Get the PAL exclusives, & by getting the rest NTSC they can run at the proper speed they were meant to run at.

Just wait until Retr0 see's that copy of LoD, he'll be so jealous!
I have a decent PS collection myself, but really I don't see the point in buying every game on the format.
There were so many lousy games, do you really need all those Army Men games in your life?
But, sure everyone needs a hobby, so good luck with that.
    I second the NTSC thing.
Just mod your PS and collect from Japan and the US.
Easy way to check the region,
    Japanese game= great cover art
    US game= pitiful cover art

Are you collecting to play or collecting to collect? The whole 50/60hz is a moot point then, well until you get to the more expensive pal stuff.

Damn you Nintendo with your poor support of European pal and your flimsy cardboard boxes!

'How many thousand games would a full PS1 collection be ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 151 ✭✭Kealy1994

Hey Im aware of the difference between the regions and the quality.arent NTSC games for current games running at a higher hz ?

For some of the better games ill buy the NTSC versions. The Pal ones are just available to me and for cheaper prices and It would cost a bomb collecting only
NTSC But ill buy in a few lots from the US from time to time and I have a friend who frequently visits Texas who is also a collector.

NTSC games I plan on picking up soon are the Lunar big Box games and the persona games.Im not only starting my ps1 collection I own around 100 titles
now But I plan on focusing on it more to complete it. :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 151 ✭✭Kealy1994

I play and collect and games ! :) ill play all the games for abit but ill only complete the good ones,.
I plan on completing most of the good RPG's on the system ! :)
I know ill end up with a load of **** games and sports games But Im a completionist,I kinda get that from collecting comics
    and trying to complete runs.

Im gonna collect the good games,The rare games, the expensive games first then ill pick up the ****ty sports titles :D

Here's a photo of a complete NTSC US set. The website I found the picture on says it's the only known complete set in the world. I'd imagine that's somewhat out of date - but it echos how hard a set this is to put together - good luck! :)

Something worth keeping in mind there too - US PS1 games use thin CD like jewel cases as far as I know. Each little section in that photo holds 28 games. I'd say a PAL collection would take up twice the space.

Yeah, here's what 545 PAL ps1 games looks like - quite a difference space wise!

    P03606100.jpg

On a side note, imagine the weight those cases at the bottom have on them

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 151 ✭✭Kealy1994

PsxCollecting from Youtube has an almost complete collection.
Like If I get the rarest ones first it wouldnt be too hard tracking down the other ones because they would be more available it would just take time and money.

The only one Im finding impossible to find is Blues Clues Blues Big Musical Pal version.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 151 ✭✭Kealy1994

Im gonna basically cover my wall in shelfs. Then Ill have a few book cases.Til I can do something like build a dedicated game room out my back.

Cheers for the heads up - that's one game I'd have passed over if I ever saw it in a second hand shop or car boot. Looks to go for decent money.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 151 ✭✭Kealy1994

I don't think it's any good :D But it is one of the rarest ps1 pal games along with Hercs adventures.Destructo 2 you can buy sealed for 20 euro because its not very known but it's one of the rarest games and it was incredibly hard to find but there was a factory found with some in Germany so there's a few on ebay for now.

    Hey kealy

Curious to know a few things,

Is there a complete list out there so you know what you're working towards?
Do you have a timeframe in mind to complete to task?
    Do you have a budget?

    Hey kealy

Curious to know a few things,

Is there a complete list out there so you know what you're working towards?
Do you have a timeframe in mind to complete to task?
    Do you have a budget?

I could be wrong but I heard there's around 1600 titles.Im picking up around 25 titles a month but going rarest/Most expensive first it's costly. So The amount I pick up a month should increase.

Games like Symphany of the night and Legend of Dragoon and similar games are quite expensive and tend to slow down how much you pick up.

So once I have the expensive stuff the amount Im picking up per month will increase and I do play or complete every game I buy if its good.

Within 12 months I should I have close to 1/4th of the ps1 Libary and for a budget.I tend not to spend over 300 a month ever. Most months I won't even spend 100.I can buy a lot of good games off someone online with 20 plus titles for under a hundred easily.

Then the games selling for 50 plus I wait for bids on ebay and I get them a lot cheaper.

I have a list of games Im currently chasing.
    Digimon world 2
    Digimon world 3
    Blues clues.Blues Big Musical.
    NTSC Big boxed Lunar titles
    NTSC Chrono Cross
Grand theft auto Australian exclusive double feature.
Some I really want.Others are just so rare Im always on the look out.

You should post a picture every now of then of your collection, it will be interesting to watch it grow over the coming months.

Wouldn't pay much for Chrono Cross. Square reprinted it a while ago and you can get boxed copies for around $10.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 34,679 CMod ✭✭✭✭CiDeRmAn

Prepare to pay lots for such great games as Kurushi and Kula World.
Be careful not to get nailed with high prices for Kurushi Final, it's a stand alone mission pack to the first one and not as valuable.
Vagrant Story is another cracker to buy, and it's also pricey.
    Happily, I have the above!

Got Suikoden 2 mint for free.

Then again I knew someone that worked for Konami :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 151 ✭✭Kealy1994

Hey I just want to clarify.I havent just started my PS1 collection.
Im aware of all these titles.I try to get my games for the cheapest
as I can get so I usually resort to bids on ebay,Forums, used video game stores.

Vagrant Story I got for 10 euro on bid.
Suikoden 1 and 2 is expensive but its lower down on the list of rare games But ill be getting both in the next few months.
There are many on ebay and they show up on adverts quite alot.

Im collecting. At the moment Im chasing after games that show up on ebay
once every 6 months and had to search 30 pages of google to find people
willing to sell a copy to me.Like Grand theft auto Australian exclusive,
Blues clues Blues Big Musical.( most likely a **** game but try track this down because its almost impossible) None on ebay or amazon,I had to search forums, forums and more forums.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 52,410 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

Suikoden 2 should be higher on your list. Hands down the best RPG on the system.

    Im following Playstationcollecting.com's list.
The owner of the site has a video showing
the truely rarest games on the system
meaning Im basically picking up the games
with the lowest print run/games sold. Then
picking up the ones I used to own as a kid that I dont own yet.

suiduken 1 and 2 is easier to get than some titles Im hunting down
as there is always copys on ebay even if there expensive.I have 2 more games to get then ill get to them along with Strider 2 which ill watch bids to get for a decent price :)

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_PlayStation_video_games

This shows the highest selling games on the system and it shows games like Legend of Dragoon,Final Fantasy 7 are actually more common than youd think.I have most of these anyway because there great games :)

Anyway man Ill take your word on it being the best RPG on the sytem.I cant wait to play it ! :D

Well good luck to you and your endeavor.
Not sure I'd be disciplined enough to follow a plan with regard to retro buying though.
Also, I wonder if the fanboys over on the PlayStation forum would be interested in your quest?
Also, anyone got any idea when it's going to be safe to discuss collecting for the PS2?

Those two always baffle me. FFVII is the second best selling game of all time on the PS1 so hardly rare and Legend of Dragoon isn't rare either but even more baffling is that people actually like it.

Final Fantasy 7 is over rated even its character models were terrible for its time. But its still iconic and not neccesarily a bad game.I like it alot even tho it has its flaws.

My favorites are 4 ( Also Known as 2 ) It has a great port on the PSP and Nintendo DS.Cecil is an amazing Character.

9 went back to its fantasy roots and you didnt have to deal with annoying characters like Cloud or Squall.

Final Fantasy 7 Crisis Core..now thats a different story.Probally one of the best PSP titles.

I've been meaning to play Suikoden 2 for absolutely years, but never got around to it. Kind of annoying as I was looking for a good RPG to play but literally just bought Fire Emblem for the 3DS.

I liked 7 and 8 Just Cloud and Squall..how I hate them...Final Fantasy 7 Kind of created the whole..pretty boy feminine male protagonist thing.

9 reminded me of the older ones and I think is probally the best on the ps1 and looks the best in my opinion anyway

Iam a big Dragon Quest fan so that is probally why I prefer that style of gameplay :)

( Im just editing this now,I taught you said Final Fantasy 9 til I rechecked the numerals.and you were addressing RetrOgamer
liking Final Fantasy 13,Yeah if anybody like that game their arguement is invalid lol)

FFXIII is pretty poor but not a total disaster. The battle system is one of the best for any system. It's just tied to quite a dull game that I couldn't play for more than 2 hours at a time.

The difficulty level is uneven.I couldnt beat a character who resembled the pope on disc two and every tutorial/tips I used wouldnt work to beat him.
    Sometimes Id nearly beat him.

Then I found out months later even tho I was grinding alot the whole game that I would need to grind atleast 3 hours more to be powerful enough to beat him.

Then the first 20 hours is a tutorial and theres a cutscene every few steps.
I liked the characters and didnt mind the cutscenes But it had too many flaws.

I wouldnt call it bad tho.Its uneven and broken game that had potential.

Didn't find the need to grind in that game at all? If you were avoiding battles in that area then you probably screwed yourself over but I found before you hit pulse you capped out well before you hit the end of a level. If you have the right tactics you can beat anything. Also I find FAQs over state what level you need to be at to beat sections.

Thats weird...I was grinding alot in the game.
I remember when you saved it respawned enemys
and id kill them over and over to build stats.

If you know the battle system you can kill all enemys up to that point.
If I was lucky and had alot of health potions I could get that boss down to a low level of life but he would always kill me.

Then I found out from a youtuber who had the same problem.
If your not leveled up enough by the time you face him its impossible
to kill him even if your good using the battle system. So you would have to kill all the enemys outside of were you face him, save and repeat.

so you must have been grinding quite abit all the way through the game that you were strong enough to defeat him.

No I wasn't at all. I just explored everywhere and didn't avoid any fights. I remember him being a tough fight but it was just a case of switching to sentinels before his big attacks and healing up after it. It was just tactics to beat him.

There's actually no point to levelling up before you get to Pulse because areas have level caps where you get **** all exp once you reach that cap and you usually max out the crystarium branches well before you finish an area.

Then again I'm quite good at RPGs, I usually finish them well below the levels most faq writers recommend.

Thats exactly what I did and what the guides specified to do.
I did that perfectly over and over. All I mostly play is jrpgs.

I think our team was different.I was using Fang,Lightning and Hope.
For that strategy to work that you used its optimised with vanille,Hope
and Lightning.Because Vanille and Hope are better healers. So even tho I changed to sentinal during his attacks he would kill Hope very easily. Were as if I had Vanille she would have been able to keep him alive.

So either way my game was messed up because I changed vanille back in and she was too under powered because I had not leveled her up at all.
So I could have swapped her back in and grinded or kept grinding with fang and the original team I was using and leveled enough to just about beat him hopefully. I just stopped playing because the game wasnt that good and I didnt want to grind because the game didnt favor fang.

Ill try track down the video that goes into detail how the game is uneven and it talks about that boss battle.
