Have to declare it off the road. August is the last month i can do so. It's next Monday that I'll be ready to go. Got a quote for 600 from Axa, 3 years NCB, 325 valued at 2500 (optimistic!) and I'm 25 on Monday. Third party fire and theft with open drive. Not too shabby.

I'm jealous of that insurance quote. I've the same Ncb but only 21 so I suppose I can't complain with 1100.

I think we can both say it beats the polos!;)

Today my brothers Golf decided it didnt like its engine. And blew up (over dramatised for effect).
Said his wife was just driving along the bypass and the engine died. Some vague translations of what the mechanic told his wife, who told him who told me, was some "connecting rod basically came out of the block and wrecked the engine". From what he was saying there's a crack in the bottom of the engine, and the whole thing is no good.

Hoping insurance will cover it, but not sure do they cover things like this. Anyone any ideas? Or whats a guesstimation of what this might cost to put right?

Ps. car was serviced 6 months ago, timing belt wasnt due for 12k miles. Before anyone asks

Sounds like it threw a leg which would mean a whole new engine dude. Insurance won't cover that. What year/engine is it?

  • Moderators Posts: 12,426 ✭✭✭✭Black_Knight

    2008. Golf Mk 5. 1.9tdi 105.

What would cause it to "throw a leg"?

Low oil, over rev, pushing it too hard? Could be a lot of things. But it basically means the the con rod has split and when they split they tend to come out of the block

Im gonna guess oil since it would seem out of character for them to be over reving or pushing too hard. Though I thought it would of at least had a digital gauge in the dash.

He did say he wife noticed there was oil all along to road where she pulled over (after kaboom). Im only getting 3rd hand news, so who knows what really happened. Doubt anyone would say "oh, yeah, I was trashing the b'jesus out of it in 3rd on the motorway. I also too out the sump plug to shave off a few grams".

Think they got a quote of around 2k (its only an estimate, no engine or anything yet) to have it sorted.

Reminds me off this thread. Conrod bolt came loose on a 2008 passat 1.9tdi.

The 2k I heard sounds either wrong, or cheap! That guy ended up paying 5k! 3 for the engine and 2 for labour (I guess).

I wont be picking anything :)
Im sure they would if they have to. Any idea what money they'd charge, or what to go looking for (ie, so you dont buy a crud engine)? Or is it just best to get the garage to sort that out?

I'd have no idea. I've left the world of vag  behind me :)

I might give him a shout. They're Cork based though. Having said that, the car is in Thurlas atm. It gets around pretty well for a car with no engine.

Very much so, but hard to focus on turn off's when there's a Corsa in front i fairness, blinded by it's vulgarity! :D

Whilst guilty of missing the turn myself you made a horses ass of that one. You could have skipped off for Portadown or even Craigavon and made your way back through Newry and onto the REAL M1.

I did indeed make a hames of it alright, didn't even realise I was looking for a turn off! Was the first time being in Belfast as well so that didn't help!

    The N2 is a nice road though...:D

    D

I'd find it hard to be distracted by a Corsa.

Off out to test a 2007 XJR which a mate and are considering buying to share. I can't justify a third car all by myself. 12.5k asking, one of the few current benefits of living in London. Insurance quote was £600 without NCB allocation for him! £800 for me (and I only have a licence for 5 years).

Yeah, it's actually pretty decent really.

Since they sorted out the Monaghan part especially. Rest is plain sailing and fairly straight.

From Ashbourne to Slane had to be relatively straight for when the Lord or King was making his way to Slane Castle ! The only real pain in the a$$ is Ardee but if you know your way around you can avoid the traffic.

I've just had a delivery from MISTER AUTO :D

Lets hope it's all the correct brand and all there. The threads on here have me worried.

Whenever I've ordered decent brands they have been spot on. Bit of a pick on mix on the cheap spurious parts though. Moog and the like.

Well I've got front brake pads and sensors and they are both Bosch as I ordered.

My brake discs haven't arrived though but they seem to have been shipped separately and are due to arrive tomorrow!

    Happy out.

I didn't bother testing it! THey share their space with an exotic car rentals; seems like the XJR hadn't been there long enough (a week) to have been out much but couldn't find the FMSH (although I'll bet it does exist) and 6k more on the clock than they stated. Basically a bad feeling about the place. I think the muppet the boss passed me off to will be having his arse tanned as after sitting in it and checking his paperwork, I told him I couldn't be bothered testing it as his attitude stank (which it very much did) and walked. I'll be checking out a better selection of Saturday.

I didn't miss much in the test as I lit up the same V8 engine and drove away.

I got an nct 2months ago in a week even though It wasn't die for 3 months.
I rang them asked for any cancellations in Dublin or Kildare and had a date in a few minutes.
It's much easier to ring them because their online system sucks.
Might be worth trying them and give them a list of centres.

Got the tyres done on the car today, only needed to replace one, thought I'd a slow puncture in another but it turns out the rim needed to be sealed.

@ Scortho some more pics :)
