Shame Ken is off today. Would have enjoyed his dissection of the Ireland performance. He's at his best covering Ireland imo.

Yeah but looking forward to hearing him next week. Good to have 2 guys on debating the issues rather than just bashing MON

Have a ticket going for the thursday if anyone is interested. Forgot it clashed with another gig I'm going to. Face value obviously.

I know it's a joke, it's almost like these people have lives outside of their working commitments or something.

    Football pod was excellent.

The normal pod was weird. Their take on the Serena Williams thing was a bit odd. She had and absolute meltdown on court, abused the umpire and ref, claims sexism after... its straight forward, she’s wrong.

Edit: To be fair, having listened to all the pod Ken hit the nail on the head...which was unexpected considering their usual social justice leftie leaning take on most of these things.

Thought they were very fair in their coverage of the Serena Williams fiasco. It was a pleasure to listen to people try to debate something with a bit of acknowledgement of potential shades of grey and nuance.

I'd contrast that with the ginormous thread on the subject that's been going strong over in After Hours, which is a hell of hot takes.

    Football pod was excellent.

Loved the bit about Keane really doing his homework when he was disparaging people previously, was it Neil Lennon he was telling Keane's garage was bigger than his house. Now he's just a 'journeyman', calling Arter a prick etc.

I enjoyed the conversation yesterday but i totally agree with ken this is very simple she was in the wrong and was punished accordingly. To start going on about being a mother and feminist etc is just smoke and mirrors and i actually think its dangerous to entertain the notion. I was surprised your one Sinead seems to be backing SW up to an extent as did the american contributor. I think if this had happened to a man it would be the exact same.

Anyway back on topic i love second captains

Peter Crouch selling his Aston Martin because of a look Roy Keane gave him.

There was something small and maybe insignificant that she said that stuck with me.

Due to a lack of data to back up Williams' claims she said "we can't be sure" that men and women are treated differently, it was if she fully believes it but is waiting for proof rather than saying "we don't know".

I'm probably reading too much into her choice of words.

I don't think they were fully backing her up really... but were certainly more than willing to engage in contextualising as a way to indulge/explain/excuse Serena's behaviour

I didn't feel that they (the two contributors) were firmly in the Serena camp - they were highly critical of her in parts - but they were interested in placing the media storm in context, because it is a bigger story than just a player throwing a strop.

Serena is a lightning rod for all sorts of coverage, positive and negative. So I think the story is really about how her meltdown is talked about, rather than the meltdown itself. Let's face it, if it was anyone else, it wouldn't be a story to interest 99% of people

You should listen back, almost immediately before she said "we can't be sure" she said "we don't know" if the men are treated differently.

So I'd say you are reading too much into her choice of words

Yeah it was really good to have an actual discussion on the matter and not have SC just tell you their left leaning bias on the story like they usually do. Two excellent pods yesterday.

Cheers for that, maybe it was just those words that stuck with me.

I think both those contributors have been excellent in the past but those contexts they referenced had nothing to do with the poor umpire who Serena has accused and continues to accuse of penalising her only because she’s a black woman. There’s no example of Serena being mistreated by racist or sexist umpires. There’s loads of examples of Serena abusing officials (both men and women) especially when she’s losing. I thought the way she brought her gender and daughter into it and then went on to console her opponent on the podium was breathtakingly cynical. I’m fairness to ken he brought some balance. Great pod.

The core issue here is that Serena Williams openly accused the umpire of sexism, dishonesty and corruption. She called him a thief. He applied the sanctions according to the rules that's all that matters.
She defamed him and he could and should sue.
Bringing anything else in to this; really is irrelevant and a diversion.
