How old are ur runners? My Achilles always came at me when runners were near the end.
Try dry needling on the calf, it does wonders.

    Sun 16th March

    4.3 miles @ 8:52

Took a couple of rest days and out today for a few easy miles. Achilles still tight but no issue with blister. Not sure what to do about 20 miler (7 miles + Balbriggan 1/2 marathon) tomorrow now...

Ideally need to get it done but 4 weeks out from Marathon can't pick up a serious injury. Any thoughts?

    Mon 17th Mar

    6 miles @ 8:39

    13.1 miles @ 8:08

Met Meno for 6 miles before the Balbriggan 1/2 marathon which passed quick enough and before long we were back at the cars pinning on our race numbers just about in time for the start of the race. After a good bit of foam rolling the night before the achilees was still niggling but manageable.

Got going in the race and was joined after 1/2 mile or so by Chinguetti. The plan was to run the first 7 at around 8:30 and the 2nd 6 at 8:20 pace. This never really happened but the pace felt pretty ok as we chatted our way around the course and up the hills. Nice to be not worrying about the pace for a change and before long we were on our way back into town towards the finish. Was delighted to get to the finish as to be honest I didn't think the day before I would be able for 19 miles.

The thoughts of an extra mile were put to the back of my mind when I spotted there was no queue for the massage table.

Don't want to ride my luck too much this week to be honest and would prefer to get rid of this niggle more than anything else. Will see how it plays out.

Not much going on here the last week unfortunately :(

Got treatment (dry needling) on the achilles on Tuesday last and gave it Wednesday to recover a bit as well. Did 45 mins roughly on Thursday & Friday but still nagging at me. Same yesterday morning pulled the plug after 4 miles or so.

Looks like I've picked up tendonitis around the left achilles as it definitely inflamed and holding fluid around it. Got it taped up yesterday evening as my PT and a guy he spoke to thinks where it is the back of my runner could be agitating it with rubbing against it when running. Also have to try some self massgae on it when I can to get the fluid moving if possible.

20 days to London and I don't know where I stand to be honest. Last week was to be a peak week of training, even allowing for a 2 week taper I'm really not sure how much I can get down this week without further damage.

There are options but I don't really want to think of them at the moment. Really on a downer with it to be honest after slogging away over the Winter we've had to be struck with this when everything should be all coming together.

I hear ya man. Do you have a bike or access to a pool? It's all about keeping the fitness up at the moment. A couple of spinning classes might be the way to go?

Cheers Gavlor. Have a bike and also the offer of a stationery bike so will be getting something done this week for sure if the other thing doesn't clear. Never thought of spinning classes but must check them out.

Nice 20 miler the weekend btw.

Cheers, though my injury is literally a pain in the ass!

Ah crap! I had a bit of achilles tendonitis before DCM12 and had the kinesiology taping thing done a few days beforehand. It got me through the marathon and achilles was absolutely fine after it. When you say you had it taped is this the kind of taping you got. If not, I would recommend it or at least talking to an expert about it.

Yep that's exactly what I had done. In fairness to my PT he checked it out with one of his old lecturers who he remembered had the same problem and that is the course of action he recommended. Have to try a few miles this evening with it taped.

Just over 5 miles easy last night. First couple of miles weren't too bad to the point where it felt like a niggle but go progressively worse. The last mile turned into a bit of a shuffle to get home. Not good.

Getting to the point where I checked out deferral options yesterday and at least there is plenty of time in that regard. I don't want to start a race I'm not sure I can finish as I probably only have one chance at it.

Not good P. Sorry to hear that. With a bit of luck you'll be ok hopefully.

Decided yesterday to get a 2nd opinion and had a 7am appointment this morning. Seems that the problem lies with my soleus being in a knot and not my achilles directly.

Few trigger points worked on at the back of the knee and down to the foot. Have to take 3 days rest now and try 2/3 easy miles on grass or trail on Sunday, stopping if it is still sore.

Pretty pissed off this wasn't spotted by the other guy to be honest and the time it has cost me getting it resolved properly. Hopefully this will solve the issue anyway.

Even if this solves it running the marathon might not be the best option for it in the long term but not going to make any hasty decisions anyway for the moment.

Have to try again tomorrow. Not so sure but will see.

3 miles easy today. This was a test to see if there was any improvement. There was a bit but still a bit of dull pain in the area.

Picked my number from my cousins yesterday while realising at the same time wondering whether I would get to use it.

Resorted to cycling yesterday with my first proper cycle in years. A few lads were heading out and I tagged along. 17 miles in total.

Having not cycled in years I thought I'd struggle and we went up long steep hill at one stage. When we got to the top I was by myself and eventually the 2 others came walking up with their bikes. Their obviously not real cyclists

Anyway back to important matters, was with the physio again this morning. She feels leg has healed a good bit and the swelling around the achilles is now gone. Gave it a good going over on various trigger points to ease it out more if possible.

    Her instructions are:

Keep doing a bit of cycling
Try a run on Thursday again to see if pain is gone
Plenty of protein to aid recovery
There's not much more she can do for it
    Marathon chances 50/50

I had kinda given up on it so to speak but feel a bit more optimistic now. I won't have run properly (any sort of distance) in 4 weeks if I do get to the start line so any thoughts of chasing a time will be out the window. At this stage that doesn't bother me too much. It should but there is not much I can do about it now and there are a lot worse things going on or that could happen which we have to remember.

    What will be will be.

I'd be more than happy with 3:45 myself at this stage let alone pace someone to it ;)

You were in the same boat with New York yourself T and as you say hopefully will get to experience it.

Yep, even though New York went wrong for last 11 miles and I paid for it afterwards for over 4 months, it was still worth it. Yeah I was pissed when i crossed the line but i finished it.

I wont do a marathon now for maybe 3 years though!!!

    5.04 miles @ 8:22

Legs felt a bit tired after a couple of days cycling. Trying to put the other thing to the back of my mind.

Wife and son both dosed at the moment. That's all I need.

Made the decision today to withdraw. After much recollection and discussion with others it was a no brainer. Hopefully 2015 brings more luck

Sorry to hear that. Was in a similar position back in October with DCM so know how you feel having to withdraw so close to event. At least you can defer your London entry. Hopefully you can get fit again soon and put some of that good training to use soon.

Really sorry to hear that Pete, but you know your own body better than anyone else. Have a good rest now and get the injury sorted and come back stronger.

That's very unlucky, ballsy decision though so fair play to you

Bad luck Pete but get over the injury and there will still be a good base for an enjoyable summer of racing before getting back into the longer stuff for Autumn!

Sugar :( Sorry to hear that. Must be so disappointing for you after all the hard work you've put in but hopefully you'll be even better next year.

Is that Sugar as in sh1t or is it a term of endearment for pistol? ;)
