You are Bangernomicing well my lad!!

Can't help but feel that for someone needing a cheap car and on a tight budget - a rust free example of one of these Primeras in decent order is as good a starting point as any if your not put out by the size of the car*.

*some people whod prefer a smaller car to drive might think from a driving view point its too big - at that money though paying 1.6 tax instead of 1.1 is a non issue - it would be better to pay 1.6 tax on something in good order then 1.1 tax on something thats fit for scrap

Agreed, a cracking car for the money. The ad looks like they are in need of cash fast too. Pics taken at night in a garage .....

Anyhoo - car won't be for sale at that price for long. Unless there is something major wrong with it.

Realistically - its a fact of life that at 500/600 euros - you will find yourself going to look at stuff that's got things wrong with them - that's just the risk you have to take.

What makes a Primera an option at that money - is if you take a 500 euro Primera and a 500 euro Yaris - You can be pretty assured somethings wrong with the Yaris - as they normally make quite a bit more really.

A Primera at that money - theres a better chance (compared to the Yaris) that its in okay order.

Need to be realistic though I think - there may be small things wrong with it - but its a case of - does the fault interfere with the safe reliable use of the car.

So a broken gearbox - is walk away time.

However if the Sunroof* doesn't work - but its closed - you just live with it.

if the Stereo* doesn't work - you could learn to live without having a stereo

A dent on the back door - you live with it assuming its not a safety issue and just cosmetic

What you need is a car that drives okay, is in decent order - meaning satisfactory safe condition for the road and that it starts without issue.

Unfortunately - part of the risk of a car at this price level is that while it works fine today - it could have a problem a month down the road.

That's part of the risk you take imo - but all you can do is check out the car (or have it checked out) as good as you can really.

    All imo

*assuming its just the specific item - stereo or sunroof - and not a bigger electrical issue affecting essential stuff you need

I've talked about buying an E39 for my gf a while ago and her birthday is upcoming so I've resumed the search. In order of preference I've found the following:

    http://cars.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/bmw-520-e39/6455227
Fits the bill perfectly being automatic and just a 2.0 though its got no NCT.

    http://cars.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/bmw-523i/6551756
Fits the bill almost perfectly apart from being 2.5 which isn't the first choice really.

    http://cars.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/bmw-520-i/6550660
All good, but a 2.2 isn't really at the top of the list.

She hasn't ever had anything bigger than a 1l Daihatsu Sirion so I'd just wonder how she might manage with a 2.2 or 2.5 RWD.

    Decisions, decisions....

I don't know if they trim has beenw rapped or if its new trim pieces, but they're in flip paint or whatever its called. Looks horrible but I can see past that.

Of the three E39's I'd take the middle one and be damned with the extra tax.

The NCT till Christmas gives 10 months of hassle free motoring, and with those alloys it's also the nicest looking of the three, something to put a bit of a smille on your face when you go out to it first thing in the morning.

Agreed I'd take the 2.5 as well

My thoughts exactly, Red Kev. Won't use any more fuel either.

And is taxed for the next 6 weeks. Nice bonus!

The 523 is lovely and its strongly being considered, i just wonder how she'll cope with coming from a 1l tin can Daihatsu to a 2.5 RWD BMW. I know the 2.0 will be a huge step up also.

We'll see anyway. I feel like we'll end up with the 523.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 59,579 ✭✭✭✭unkel

She won't be able to tell the difference between the 2l 520 and the 2.5l 523 unless she seriously puts her foot down, which I doubt she'll do in a new car. The size of the E39 is more of a concern than its power!

A big jump in size for sure.

In saying that - my sister went from never having driven anything bigger then a Carina II (afaik) to a Nissan Primastar (Renault Traffic van with Nissan badge) - in one go.

She is a good sensible driver though - I should think a lot would depend on your girlfriends attitude towards driving the new car.

If shes careful - drives sensible and takes it handy until shes fully used to the power - she should be fine.

If she insists on driving it like the Daihatsu from word go - that's when she could hit bother - as the Daihatsu may have needed a bit of shoe to keep it moving at decent pace - especially if your GF likes to push on a bit.

The rear wheel drive thing - isn't so much of an issue imo - if the cars driven sensibly for a while.

Might be worth considering investing in a skidcar session or 3 - to help her along.

Thing is though - is she actually a decent sensible driver - because if shes actually a good driver - she should adapt along to the 5 series - yes it will feel different for a while but a good careful driver SHOULD manage.

If she likes BMWs - would an E46 or E36 3 series be better I wonder - if you think the jump in size MIGHT be too much.

Id get over that - its the privacy glass on the rear side windows thats bugging me about that car tbh.

Not a massive issue to be fair - I just don't think it suits the car at all

Little bit of haggling to be done. You could sell it on in a year for a few hundred as a "classic". Money back guarantee too, wonder what the terms are to that.

All his cars have money back guarantees :D

(you didn't seriously think he'd give you your money back, did you? :p)

Nice 323 - definitely a sound investment even if it is just for the floor mats!

Man, that's the car I learned to drive in. A white one. Super little car.

Got one of those for free off my BIL a few years back - when I was changing it a guy offered me €50 and a slab of Heineken for it which I happily accepted. :)

I once gave a neighbor of mine a bottle of wine for a Punto!

So a 1992 car right now is considered a classic? Interesting.

To a lot of people it is. And technically it can be insured as a classic being 20+ years old.

Have you ever seen what people will do for a sub €500 DX Corolla or EF Civic? They go crazy for them, and I'm sure this will get similar interest. Lots of young lads have a thing for "boxy" stuff.

Don't even start that one in here :)

In the Classic Cars forum, we have discussed this many times and the conclusion is there is no one definition of a classic car

Ah sure .. it gets even better, when people either confuse or don't understand the concept or the difference between classic and vintage :)

I find that older cars are easier to work on, they are simpler, don't have as much useless electronics. Also, I'm not a fan of them bubbly looking cars (if that makes any sense at all). I prefer the cleaner, simple look... and they also can be modified easier. :)
