Seems the Volvo does indeed have a years test.

Odball job, but always liked them.

Long enough NCT, New T-belt and a rake of other work done.

Now the 1.8l had the potential to blow a head gasket every so often. The 1.4 less so. But the potential was there. Fantastic engine otherwise. Loads of power from a 1.4l

if you are looking for a reliable car that you can depend on look else where. Those mg rovers are terrible cars.

Those MG's are supposed to be a right pig on fuel.

    FYP :D

Most people (even many in here) aren't half opportunistic enough to get the most value out of bangernomics motoring

Most of the time optimal bangernomics would mean buying a car that the man in the pub says will break down, is hard to sell on, is bad on fuel, will blow head gaskets, etc.

    My ads on adverts.ie:

Victron stuff for sale, Multiplus-II, Quattro, other inverters and batteries and usually some watches!

The K series engine was some of the most advanced production engine design of the 80s. Light and powerful for the specific capacity and with the VVC they were pretty good. You only have to look at the likes of Caterham and Lotus who used them for years. Shame the cooling just wasn't up to it in the 1.8l.

103bhp from 1396cc isn't to be sniffed at. VW were only putting 75 in a similar capacity engine.

And the diesels are peaches too - bulletproof engines (the older versions) and economical. Trim drops off..glue puts it back..

I'm not sure about on being them being bad on fuel but their tendency to go through headgaskets is not pub talk, it's fact

Another thing that isn't pub talk is that, amongst other things, they rust badly in places, suffer electrical issues on the facelift cars, the Peugeot gearbox on earlier cars is weak, Almost all develop noisy tappets with some developing piston slap as well.

All in all a terrible car. Plenty of well maintained examples suffer the same issues so its bad design and poor build quality that's the main cause of these cars woes.

I agree with that. The guys warning to be wary know their stuff and are giving genuine advice, no doubt about it, but I've found in the past that after having been warned away from a Motor for all sorts of reasons yet having followed my gut and gone ahead with the purchase, the cars have turned out to be great little runners.

There's a place for caution but sometimes it can spill over into scaremongering.

Sure, they blow more headgaskets than other cars in the class. You're not getting my point though ;)

I'd rather buy a €500 MG ZR that's 10% likely to blow it's head gasket than a same year, same condition €2,000 Toyota Yaris that's only 1% likely to blow it's head gasket

Now do you get my point? :)

The mg has more than a 10% chance of suffering hg failure, far more IMO.

And no I don't get your point. A yaris is a better car in almost every way in comparison to an mg zr and is worth its premium over the mg.

I guess if you can get it closer to €1k its a good bangernomics buy. Nearly on classic tax.

OK, So say for the most part a bangernomics car is kept for 1 year, does that sound about right?

Ss what you are saying is that 1 out of every 10 of those engines ever made will suffer a head gasket failure over the next year (or more as you say you think)? That is a ridiculous thing to say, and, thankfully because you think that those cars are superb value for the true bangernimicist.

Just because a car doesn't have a reputation for reliability doesn't mean that it isn't good value;)

There's one MK2 GTI in Letrim for €900 but without NCT. Apparently it got work done for it, but some might still need to be done.

    NCT 12/14, 1450 EUR.

Looks like a nice unmodified example.

Give it a few more years and unmodified versions like that one will fetch mad money. Like the DX Corolla now.

Might be a good business to buy modified Corollas and un-modify 'em. :pac:

Great find, JohnBoy. Decent tested and taxed car for €500. Would cost you €2,000 anywhere on the continent.

I think an unmodified early MKII will be an infinitely more desirable classic than the later big bumper models because so many base spec Golfs have been modded with big bumpers and bee stings.
