It does get more difficult to value when you get back towards the 93/94 age of car.

I think theres a judgement call to be made based on each individual car - factors like condition, the type of car it is and if its something you actually like all come into play

    1999 Merc E220
    2.2 Diesel
    147k Miles
    NCT 4/14, tax 5/14
    €950
Seems cheap considering the tax. Only 1 owner too.

I'd say it is overpriced indeed. 1.3 (more than likely 74 bhp 4E-FE) engine in wagon? Insufficient.

    Tyres are damaged, btw. :pac:

Its not the most appitizing of cars - but I thought the 1.3 in that era was the 16 valve and had around 87 bhp.

Fuel injected too - remember the catalytic converters came out at the end of 92 on petrol cars in readiness for the new emissions regulations in 93.

Most manufacturers with one or 2 exceptions went fuel injected with the introduction of catalytic converters.

The previous model Corolla did have 74 bhp in 1.3 form if I recall correctly - they were 12 valves.

That example isn't the nicest though imo

Sorry to say this but that car isn't one bit genuine. The seats are changed, the clocks are changed etc etc. Id be avoiding tbh.

    AFAIR there were 1st Gen 4E-FE used until 1996, 74 bhp. 2nd Gen 88 bhp. You probably mention 2E, 1.3 12v engine, 65 to 82 bhp. ;)

I'm sure this could be bought within budget. It'd make a nice family bus and its something different compared to the usual stuff.

Can't see the value in this at all myself, can someone enlighten me?

Yep, you're right, I was wrong.

    1st Gen EFE (92-95) had 88bhp, 2nd gen (95on) had 74.

    My fault. :o

Yeah I posted that just because it was unusual rather than good value.

    This seems decent.

    97 almera, nct to 7/14, 650 euro.

A large family wagon, with a capable engine and auto 'box, with a years NCT for €2000 (after haggling).

Nicer than an A6 Avant imo.

And no one said bangernomics had to be "sensible.

So those of us who are enthusiasts could go mad and break the normal rules from time to time :D

Afterall - if a Mk 2 Jetta 1.6 D arrived in bangernomics territory - I might just have to buy it for no good reason at all :D:D

Even the creator of Bangernomics himself Mr James Ruppert (spelled his surname incorrectly) is running a BMW 728i these days :)

I completely agree on the sensible part, just don't see the appeal myself, different strokes for different folks...

Nice wheels! Worth at least half the asking price to a north side lombroso :)

the watanabe rs8's are lovely wheels imo :) look more at home on an ae86 or something. they don't seem to hold value as well as other "old skool" japanese wheels though, you'd pick up a set for 150-200 easy.

i hate the pulsar. just saying. i like the concept of a jap scrap bangernomic but matte white with the carbon wrap bonnet is pretty tacky.

I'd buy it, paint it and drive the balls out of it.

    Because if the paint?
If that was a 1.4 with normal paint you'd probably think it's alright, yet a VZR with a bit of a dodgy paint job is a ball of dung?
That comment is a ball if dung.

I like the paint, looks like felt spec and japscrap had an offspring.

Yeah, I was half thinking I'd probably just drive it.
Then I remembered, I want to Rat Look one. :D

Yes one of the reasons is because the paint is in a mess. And the price for this mess is the other reason.

In this country Re-sprayed matt white or re-sprayed matt in any colour usually means a rattle can job or a very cheap spray job done by the owner of the car and his car enthusiast boy racer mates. The black bonnet doesn't help matters either, it looks all wrong and as someone else mentioned, the car looks tacky. That car has clearly fallen into the wrong hands.

With regards to a 1.4 with "normal" paint, Yes the paintwork would look far better than on that paticular vzr but I wouldn't pay 1600 for one, nor would I pay 1600 for a vzr that has fallen into the wrong hands though.

Most VZR's go for that kind of money, they don't get the same following as EK's.

So, writing off a decent car just because of the paint?
Can not agree with that sense, especially when you're talking sub €1500, no way he expects to get the full asking.

I think if it did buy it, I'd whack a coat of grey primer over it and leave it. It's a weird one but a mate if mine did it to his EG and it looks really well. For less than €50 too.

I was joking earlier btw, I don't think the paint looks bad at all. It actually suits the car

(despite it being japscrap :P )

I'd hardly write it off based on the paint job, would some people rather a perfect car on the surface but rubbish mechanically? If it checked out I'd overlook the paint job, they're less common than the 1.4, and the price could be wrangled down.

Not only less commen, it's not a standard Euro GA16, it's an Jap SR16 with NEOVVL and 170bhp.
