I can think of plenty of numbers this woman should be ringing before Liveline - Pieta House, Samaritans and suicide help lines, not forgetting the DSPCA if there are 70 animals in the bedroom

Why is this woman ringing Joe Duffy? Not much patient confidentiality here!

sounds like the son needs to get out and meet people rather then animals

She's afraid to walk into the bedroom.

    I don't blame her.

The place sounds like a scene from an Indiana Jones film.

Maybe her son could volunteer with some animal charity?

    Is this call a windup?

Sounds like he has a reptile house in his bedroom. :)

She emphasised that he likes exotic animals not dogs. By exotic, I think she means reptiles, which are much less sociable than mammals. In fact many reptiles prefer a solitary existence. I wonder if that is some how connected?

Why is her son's depression being discussed on the radio? National radio at that.

I, for want of a better word, suffer with depression. If my mam was on the radio discussing my personal issues I'd go mad.

I'm kinda similar to her son in that I just started losing interest in my hobbies but I've discovered that they're hugely important to me now.

Anti-depressants can only do so much but without a proper support system like counselling, then you can only go so far. Now, that's just from my own personal experience. It's not for everyone and may be a bit of trial and error but I feel counselling and anti-depressants are working for me.

    "He has low self-esteem, Joe"

I hope to f*ck he hasn't the radio on upstairs.

Will some neighbour rush in, hang up the phone and give her a stern talking to?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,585 ✭✭✭✭Lady Chatterton

I'm not sure I'd discuss my worries or details of my depression with my mother if I thought she was going to rely it all to Joe Duffy.

Should this really be on national radio.

No wonder he has problems when he has a mother who discusses his personal life on the national airwaves. That guy needs to leave home and get as far away from her as possible! This whole conversation is totally unethical.

There can't be too many 24 year old lads who bring snakes and things to children's parties to entertain the kids.

Any chance of annonimity is well and truely gone now.

He has a guinea pig too Joe.

Its called dinner for the snake !

"there's a baby alligator in my sitting room Joe"

There's one sentence I can honestly say I never thought I would hear.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,342 ✭✭✭✭That_Guy

Did she say he's going to counselling or anything?

For me, I fell out of love with my hobbies but gradually got in touch with them and feel they're more important than ever to distract myself from various things or just as a stress reliever.

When her son is ready to talk, I'm sure he will but this woman needs to stop fúcking crowding him and give him a bit of space. Offering a listening ear as opposed to barging into his room and dragging info out of him may not be helping him and may end up resenting her.

No, and not for the first time either.

So much for screening calls....I suppose the Duffer doesn't mind as long as it boosts both his ratings and his self-declared credentials as some kind of radio shrink.

What does he feed the alligator? :)

I can't quite figure out what's going on here, what with the alligators, snakes and low self-esteem computer game unemployment.
