"John Lafia, who co-wrote 1988 horror film “Child’s Play” and also co-wrote and directed “Child’s Play 2,” died April 29 in Los Angeles," according to Variety.

"According to the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office, the cause of death was suicide," Variety reports.

Lafia collaborated with Tom Holland and Don Mancini on the horror movie screenplay, and was credited with coining the name “Chucky” and contributed the famous line, “Hi, I’m Chucky, wanna play?” In 1988, the original “Child’s Play” went on to top the box office and received a Saturn award for best horror film, as well as a nomination for best writing. He also received a writing credit on the 2019 remake.

“Child’s Play” creator and screenwriter Don Mancini said in a statement provided by Lafia’s family, “We’re devastated to hear of the passing of our friend John Lafia. He was a crucial part of the ‘Chucky’ family from the very beginning. He co-wrote the original ‘Child’s Play’ script along with director Tom Holland and myself, and John directed ‘Child’s Play 2,’ — the consensus favorite film among ‘Chucky’ fans. John was an incredibly generous artist. He let me tag along with him to every meeting, and shadow him on set; he taught me more about filmmaking during the production of that movie than several semesters in film school. John was also one of the most naturally curious and constantly creative people I ever met, someone who was always taking pictures, and jotting down ideas.”

Lafia was born in 1957 and received a BFA in Motion Picture and Television from UCLA. He worked in the art department on Alex Cox’s “Repo Man” and on “Space Raiders” before moving into screenwriting.

His first major credit was 1988’s “The Blue Iguana,” an action film starring Dylan McDermott, which he wrote and directed in addition to producing its soundtrack. “The Blue Iguana” was selected for a midnight showing in the official selection at the 1988 Cannes Film Festival. In 1993, he wrote and directed the science fiction film “Man’s Best Friend,” which debuted at No. 2 at the box office. Lafia also wrote, directed and produced the TV mini-series “10.5” in 2004 and its spinoff “10.5: Apocalypse” in 2006.

His other directing credits include the TV series “Freddy’s Nightmares,” TV movie “The Rats” and the live action video game “Corpse Killer.” Lafia’s last project was the TV movie “Firestorm: Last Stand at Yellowstone” in 2006, starring Scott Foley and Richard Burgi.

Very sad to read this. Her films - such as Humpday, Your Sister’s Sister or Outside In - were typically lovely little films, that on the surface looked like your typical indie or mumblecore efforts but always reached deep to achieve something that felt well earned, honest and funny. A modest and unassuming directorial style that nonetheless made her one of the most reliable and likeable of modern American indie filmmakers.

Very sad to read this. I loved Laggies, or Say When, as it was called here for some reason. She had a lot of TV credits to her name too, most recently Little Fires Everywhere with Reese Witherspoon. Very sad news indeed.

Watched Outside In on neflix a couple of months back, nice little Indie flick... don't know if its still there. She was in a relationship with Marc Maron before she died very pretty she was also.


Sorry to hear of Fred Willard Best in Show is a favorite of mine.

The photos in the obit articles which are mostly from quite some time ago, so I confused Willard with John Michael Higgins for a minute. Looked them up - age difference aside, there's a remarkable resemblance. In the photo below, Willard is in the centre, and Higgins rightmost.

A really heartbreaking story has occurred in Las Vegas regarding one actor from Twilight.

Twilight actor, Gregory Tyree Boyce, was found dead last week alongside his girlfriend, Natalie Adenike Adepoju, in a condominium in Las Vegas; Nevada.

Clark County coroner, John Fudenberg, has said that no foul play was suspected from the couple's death.

Gregory Tyree Boyce (30) leaves behind a 10 year old daughter. Natalie Adepoju (27) was the mother of a 4 year old son.

I'll say the kids are now heartbroken with a lot of pain after hearing that their parents are now longer with them.

Veteran character actor Richard Herd has died at 87. He seemed to be comfortable in both movies and TV e.g. in 1980 he played a Captain in an episode of M*A*S*H and a General in Private Benjamin. In recent years he worked mostly in TV, including Seinfeld and Star Trek: Voyager, but was in Get Out, The Oath and The Mule over the last few years.

Ron Kurz Dies, Friday the 13th Part 2 Writer Was 79

Just weeks after the passing of Child's Play co-writer John Lifa, it's another sad day today for classic horror fans as we've gotten word that screenwriter Ron Kurz has passed away. Known for writing the screenplay for Friday the 13th Part 2 and for providing uncredited rewrites for the original movie, Kurz reportedly died from heart failure on May 7, though the news of his death was just made public at Fridaythe13thFranchise.com this week. He was 79 years old.
Many Friday the 13th fans may also not realize that Kurz had also contributed to the screenplay of the original movie under the pseudonym Mark Jackson.

She'll be best known for her work on the films of her brother David, including Dead Ringers, Naked Lunch, M. Butterfly, Crash, eXistenZ, Spider, A History of Violence, Eastern Promises, The Fly, and others.

There's a good obituary on The Star (Canadian newspaper).
