On the games section, there is a my pins thing where you can get at all the stuff you have pinned. Faster than going to the app section, I'd figure. I know it is faster to get to XBLA games than the other way, for instance, so figured it'd be better for apps too.

I appreciate your advice, but ownership of these experiences is being taken away and I don't feel like turning these devices on any more. It's like someone messing with your stuff and putting crap you don't like all over what you like.

I play 3ds and vita more these days because ps3 and Xbox don't feel like games devices any more.

My gaming collection and amount of hours gaming would disagree with the assessment it doesn't feel like a games device.

Feels very much like a games device to me. I don't use netflix or sky player on my xbox and use it purely for gaming, but I can see where people are coming from thinking its becoming less of a games console as I regularly see people on my friends list spending hours using netflix and all that.

On the Major Nelson podcast a few weeks ago he was talking about the reveal and said that they would be showing off the future of Games, TV and entertainment, then went back and said "Did you hear that ... games.". Also he highlighted that there would be much more to talk about two weeks later at E3 - more than they could fit into the one-hour or so reveal event.

Think about it, if the Dash hadn't been updated - we would still be using the old blades system, It would be impossible to find anything because the search was rubbish, we'd have arcade games that couldn't be larger than 512MB, there'd be no Games on Demand, no cloud storage for save games and profiles.

OK, the Xbox has a bunch of extra features lately - be it a browser, youtube, Netflix or whatever. They're just that, extras. I've played many of the big games in the last few years since these features started to appear - Arkham City, Mass Effect 3, Red Dead Redemption, Halo 4, MW3, Skyrim, Need for Speed, Walking Dead. The recent Games on Demand sale was excellent - I picked up Fallout 3 for a fiver. But, I've also watched many, many hours of Netflix and enjoyed that too.

If you look at the number of released games, there were more games released 2012 than in 2010 or 2006.

The problem with most of the games in recent time is that they have been sequels - there are fewer original IPs coming out because game studios are worried about the publishers are more concerned about how many units they will sell, Metacritic scores and backing a sure thing, than taking a risk on something completely new.

Microsoft only need to build the ecosystem to ensure that it's easy to develop for and easy for us to find what we want. It's up to the developers and publishers to come up with some quality titles and, OK, I'll include Microsoft as a developer and publisher in that regard.

Think about the PS4 launch event - were there any of the major publishers or games missing from there - EA didn't even get a mention; How about GTA V? We already know that Call of Duty Ghosts will be at the Xbox reveal event, probably with timed-exclusive DLC.

The one feature that the PS4 has that seems utterly cool, is the inclusion of the Gaikai streaming technology - meaning that as soon as you buy a downloadable, it will start playing immediately while the rest of the game downloads in the background - no need to wait for a 30GB download. Same for demos. Eventually, that is how they'll get the PS3 games onto the system (although you will probably have to buy them again - with the possible exception of the downloaded games).

Overall, I'm really looking forward to seeing what is coming from both companies and that there will be a decent competition between both consoles. That is what will define the next console generation - if there is stiff competition, there will be a reason for each of them to try to outdo the other. If it's a one horse race, then things could just stagnate. Roll on 21. May.

Im really looking forward to the hardware reveal - I want to weigh up the option of replacing my PC hardware and buying the next Gen consoles. No matter what other fluff they add they cant fluff the hardware they put in the machine

I'm in the same boat, have wanted to build a gaming PC for a while now but I don't think there is any point considering it until I know what the next xbox is going to be like.

Though I'm leaning towards a PC as I can upgrade it in the future too

Agreed and I don't see the harm in Microsoft adding an entertainment interface to the console surely extra features like Netflix etc is a positive thing.

But then you have MS charging for Gold subs to use Netflix while on the PlayStation it's free to use Netflix.

Microsoft will want to either abandon pay for online play model (can't see that happening) or adopt Sony's PS Plus style service. (can't see them doing that either).

Is it a foregone conclusion that Sony will continue to operate as-is though? Maybe not the netflix part, but the paid online, for instance.

I wouldn't be at all surprised to see Sony start to charge for multiplayer, especially if SEN is getting as big an expansion as they say

Imagine if MS announced a Shenmue 3 or Half-Life 3, something of that ilk...

You can have all the apps and extra fluff you want but usually, it takes just one game for you to make your initial purchase.

Surprising that Sony haven't used The Last Guardian as a launch title for the PS4, at least not yet anyway. That would be cool and something you can't get on Xbox.

Unfortunately, I reckon the Xbox reveal will be played safely enough, something like Sony's reveal except they will show the unit itself. Someone has to blink first at E3 though.

I've given up all hope on Shenmue 3 ever being made, a Mirrors Edge 2 reveal would make me quite happy though

really looking forward to seeing whats in store, anyone want to make some predictions?

I reckon microsoft is going to push the boat out big time on this launch - more so than sony ever did. I think It'll be very game focused as well, seeing as they have semi acknowledged that people feel they are getting too multimedia focused. I think we'll see the machine itself, plus a good selection of games. i don't think they'll hold back on a lot for E3 etc. i reckon we'll get a big overview, and then more in depth looks at each game from here on out. I also think we'll be given a definitive release date of before christmas this year. Microsoft really got a leg up by getting the jump on the PS3 this generation, if theres any doubt that the PS4 will be delayed till after christmas, they'll try to capitalise on it.

I'm kind of setting myself up to not see that many games, it being more about the look of the console and tech demos kind of thing. They may show some games, but the big games show case I think will be E3. In short, I'm setting my expectations low for this, and higher for E3.

The one being shown for definite is Call of Duty: Ghosts, if you're into that sort of thing. Personally, I think I've outgrown it at this stage unless they make some radical changes!

COD, I only really play for the campaigns, which don't last all that long. And I haven't even played BLOPS 2. I might at some point down the road*. Might check the game swaps forum at some point down the road and see if someone wants to trade for a bit... As long as it would take me to clear the campaign. Any future COD game certainly wouldn't be a system seller. Heck, game seller is probably pushing it.

*Can't do it now as I'll be moving in the next week, and besides that I have a hell of a lot of other games I intend to play starting around that time.

The Campaign on BLOPS2 isn't fantastic tbh, I'm really enjoying the multiplayer though (150 hours logged so far!), so much so that I've picked up dishonored & mass effect 3 in a sale and have yet to play them.

Yup, there'll be plenty of the console, loads of crappy kinect 2, 3-4 games (one of which is obviously ghosts) and then about 45 minutes on how it's an "entertainment system"

Seeing what COD looks like on a next generation console will be interesting. It's gonna look so different and just amazing. It has to.

Not really. This jump will not be as big as Xbox 1 to the 360. The Xbox 1 could not even cope with the CoD game that was on the PC. The 360 could cope with CoD 2 that was on the PC with reduced graphics.

Console and PCs are closer than ever compared to the PS2 and Xbox 1 were in those days. Partly because of all the console ports to PCs and the fact there are hardly PC exclusives anymore.

Look at the graphical effects in CoD4 and compare them to CoD2 for example. It will be at least 2 years before these consoles show what they can really do.

It'll be interesting to see what MS do becuase they could take a step forward in the race by removing any doubt about the always online function and what direction they want to take Xbox Live in. They'll obviously want to keep other aspects under wraps but it'd be nice to see where both companies are at.

I'm open to buying either console but MS have the advantage at the minute for me. But that's probably down to the fact that I moved from PS3 to Xbox this gen.

Can't wait to see next gen fifa myself.

Hopefully we'll get an idea of game prices, if we haven't already?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,401 ✭✭✭Royal Irish

I don't remember reading anything about next gen game prices. I wouldn't be surprised if the next gen games start from 60 or 70euro.

I don't think it will change. The prices currently set were set after extensive research and were set during a boom.

There'll be no change apart from the gouging games like COD etc. I'd be very surprised if there were.
