    Hi Folks,

I have a Gerber LHR that I want to get sharpened. Purchased the knife and the blade is pretty dull. The angle is such I can't get an edge on it. would need to get it re-grinded and then sharp. any one know of where I could get this done in the kildare area? I would like to get a good edge put on it that will last.
Thanks for your help and comments.

    Regards,
    Bull76.

Just buy a good oil stone and use the rough side to grind the blade down flat then the smooth side to bring up your new edge or just drop in to your local butcher shop and ask one of the butchers to sharpen it for you as most butcher shops have there own grinding machines ..

Bought a Gerber years ago, and a Gerber tool, and it was great. The newest range seem dull, and of inferior quality.

That aside. OP have a look at this thread. It's kinda long, but some really good info from Deise Musashi.

    Hi Cass,

Had seen that link before and it was very interesting. I have an oil stone but reckon the blade would need the nagle changed to get a good edge. That's why I would like some one with experience with blade to change the angle and then I can maintain the edge.

The quality of the knife and sheath are top class just the blade is dull.

Thanks to those who have replied so far.

I wouldn't dare speak for someone else, but contact Deise, and see if he can help. That's why i put up the link. To give you some info, but also to a person with which to speak directly to.

ah i have the bear grylls/gerber 'ultamite knife' been a farmer/shooter and fisherman its on my side everyday and found the fine blade quite dull at new altho the serration was good but i bought a knife sharpener in my local shooting shop for 4.99 and wasn't expecting much from it. its called sharpNeasy and find it puts a good edge on any knife, small and light it can be carried any where and really does keep your knife in good nick, now it never going to be as good as sitting down and useing oil stone but for day to day i would def recomend.

My gerber profile was very sharp out of the pack and it's only a few months old. I bought a little grinder thing with ceramic bits that's made by gerber so the angles were spot on and it does the trick just fine. I know that those type sharpeners remove a lot of material and are not ideal but since it's only a 30quid knife it'll do me.... Different story with a J. Reck or something though.

Buy yourself a strop ,they are fairly cheap and have a look on you tube to see how to use it ..you will get a ridiculously sharp blade with out taking too much off it or destroying the steel.

Plus you are not a reel man unless you can sharpen your own knife then use it to carve ornaments from pieces of wood:D:D

I strop my straight razors but those blades are paper thin at the edge. Do you reckon they work for knives as well. Of course a strop does not actually sharpen as such. That's what a hone is for. It just cleans and straightens and maintains the edge. Still, I must try it!

you have that backwards you hone a blade to give the shape back, stropping it sharpens it.

I thought stropping was the same as using a steel on a knife, all it does is realligns or straightens the edge but doesn't actually sharpen them

I'm not in the kildare area but if you want to post it to me I could sharpen it up for you
