Reason i picked above is because aldi/lidi seemed to be depressing and a factory can be tough work

    Being unemployed is depressing.

Yes, it is always easier to get a job when you have one, so if you have to work somewhere you dont like it is the better option.

As mentioned Aldi/Lidl, although the work isn't great, pays better than minimum wage.

What about Hotel work? Minimum wage, long hours, pretty dismal work.

I'm in college now but I'd definitely take a job in any of the above if I wasn't

I have in the past worked for Lidl, and I found them great to work for.. good money and they treat their staff very well.

There's no shame in rolling up the sleeves if needed.

If you're looking for another job in the same field, maybe, but working full time makes it harder to brush up your skills/network/prepare a good portfolio for the work you really want to be doing.

I do it. Hours can be a bit strange but apart from that it's ok. We haven't had one Irish person hand in a CV in the last 6 months though.

Years ago it was mcdonalds or burger king that people would not be caught working in, now it seems its lidl/aldi ??

Don't see nothing wrong in working in any of the above places of employment.

Me too! Been at it 2 and a half years, will be leaving this May. Quite a lot of things I don't like about it, but i'm sure it varies from place to place.

The floor staff is about 50:50 Irish and non-Irish, but the accommodation staff actually doesn't have a single Irish person at the moment AFAIK. There was one earlier in the year, gave up after a couple of weeks.

I'm not out of work, but whatever pays the bills.

I'd sweep the roads to keep a roof over my families heads.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,255 ✭✭✭✭Esoteric_

I'm lucky in that I don't have a family to support, I'm a student, and I only pay a very small amount of rent (50 a week) because I live at home.

That said, if I was offered a job scrubbing toilets, that fit around college hours, for minimum wage, I'd take it. I'd have more pride in scrubbing toilets than I would in sitting on my backside getting the dole.

**** ya id work anywhere if I needed the job.

Never understood the attitude of people questioning where other people work. They are work, doing their bit and contributing to society. Who gives a **** if they dont take home big pay packets???

Is it true Lidl/Aldi have a really bad rep for starting off decent enough but gradually wearing down the workers by demanding an extra few hours one week, an extra shift the next and so on until crazy hours are standard, I have heard that several times now from people who currently and used to work there, turnover and bullying is supposed to be really bad..

There does seem to be an air of misery plus some of the staff bring the level of disinterest to a spectacular level.

Aldi/Lidl and most factories don't pay minimum wage and they treat you better then any Irish hotel I've ever worked in

No, proper etiquette will suffice. :)

The problem is that for many unemployed it is actually better financially to mooch off the state. €188 a week, rent allowance, medical card etc.

Not many will give that up for a min wage job that at the end of the week only has you €50 better off than welfare with the loss of benefits.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,455 ✭✭✭Where To

Work for me for a couple of days and I'd soon re-educate ya. :)

You only get rent allowance if your homeless as far as I know.

Maybe it's just your phrasing but of course people would work in these places, though during the boom it may have been different, also I wouldn't consider either Aldi or a factory hard work.

    Lol

I think thems the rules,if you live at home you can't just decide you fancy a flat,if your "kicked out"of your home you can get rent allowance but yot still have to rent privately for six months. There's a lot of myth surrounding welfare.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 473 ✭✭ThreeLineWhip

There is no requirement to rent for 6 months if you have had a housing needs assessment.

In that case you would probably be in need of housing,no?

I would work for Aldi or Lidl but unfortunately I'm not Chinese or east-European.
