AvantCard - MBNA

AvantCard is taking over my Visa card from MBNA.
Should II be concerned? Is it time to change suppliers?
I clear the card fully at end of every month, so interest rates don't worry me.
    Just wondering..

    I am with them too.

Why would you be concerned? Have you read the information sent out to you? What are you concerned about?

Why change? Who would you change to?

AvantCard have purchased MBNA Ireland from Bank of America, as they did with MBNA Spain. As it stands, it is business as usual for them.

I just got a letter today about it

Are Apollo also known as AvantCard?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,924 ✭✭✭✭BuffyBot

Apollo is the parent company of AvantCard.

    Is that good or bad.

Just go new MBNA cards last week, can I expect these replaced again shortly.
Reminds me of BOI issuing new laser cards after they started the switch to Visa debit.

It's not really either, yet. Instead of one company owning it, another does. Happens all the time.

No, the letter says current cards will remain valid until their expiry dates.

Mobile text services is gone from March 14th, happy days

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,924 ✭✭✭✭BuffyBot

Not altogether surprising with the rise of smartphones. The mobile site isn't half bad.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,340 CMod ✭✭✭✭Davy

Looks like the switch over is ready for march 15th from mbna.ie to www.avantcard.ie.

eStatments have been suspended and can be registered again when the new site goes live. Login details wont be transferred, so will have to register new.

Just tried to pay an installment on my MBNA account online and couldn't.
When I rang Carrick On Suir, I eventually got to speak to someone after half an hour holding on.
I was informed that the online service can only accept laser cards and cannot accept visa debit cards as yet.
Just wondering whether the consumer will still have to pay interest rates even though they cannot be facilitated online, and to wait half an hour to pay by phone is unacceptable. Not good enough MBNA. I am going back to my BOI Credit Card.

They never did accept visa debit. You could do an online transfer from your bank account to there account number:

    A/C: 90001059
    Sort code: 93-20-86

They can take visa debit payments, just they choose not too, as they will take them in late situations if you get to talk to the right person.

Apparently the new website will take debit card payments when launched so sit tight for another 2 weeks

    Davy,

Thanks for that. Never thought of an online transfer.

Looks like I won't need to use it, though.

Now that doesn't inspire confidence. I saw it last night but the 'Register' button wasn't working, thought it would be up and running today but it just bounces to MBNA.

This is so irritating. You would think with all that money that they would employ people able to make a seamless changeover.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,924 ✭✭✭✭BuffyBot

Massive changeovers like this are rarely seamless, to be honest.

That said, the holding page is pretty shabby looking.

My card was declined yesterday both online and in a shop though I'm nowhere near my limit, has this happened to anyone else?

And of course the website isn't working yet and I haven't been able to get through to them on the phone!

    AFAIK they're open 24/7.

    They must be having siesta!

3 days later, registration page still not available? Their PR person will be busy tomorrow.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,230 ✭✭✭Solair

I'm a bit confused too. Got new card and have no idea how to activate it. When I logged into MBNA a few days ago the activate new card links were nowhere to be seen...

I'm sure it'll smooth out over the coming day or so, but didn't think it would be that messy.

Hopefully if I make a payment to them it's not going to go missing ...

I really don't like being without online banking though ! I keep a very close eye on my cards most of the time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 813 ✭✭✭CaSCaDe711

What a messy embarrassing start this has turned into. Why didn't they leave the MBNA site up until the Avant one is ready?

I'm unsure how much I need to pay to clear the card this month, will I be hit with interest if this continues much longer?

Never mind, found the statement

    This is actually ridiculous.

Maybe they have decided that they don't want to continue the business anymore and are preparing us for a credit card cancelation wave in which they only expect us to serve the debt but don't allow us to continue using the cards.

I always thought there would be problems but not having a website is one thing, having card declined as not valid is another thing, it should not happen but by the looks of it the cards are not valid at this point in time.

Let's see if they fix it today, if not then trouble is ahead.

This happened to a friend of mine as well last week. Turns out he had made a few late payments over the year so they cut off his credit without warning. Now has a stain on his credit record. He was well under his credit limit too and always repaid the minimum and above each month.

Just phoned the contact number listed, 0818 409 511, after 25 minutes on hold I go through to a grumpy "customer support" agent. She said that they hoped the website would be working later today but after that she knew nothing, I managed to check my current balance with her but she couldn't wait to get off the phone. Its years since I've experienced such bad customer service.
