It is 9 months since I kicked my Coke habit

    Coca Cola that is.

On the 15th of February I made a life changing decision and I went off Coke for good. God it was the drink of the devil and I could often guzzle my way through 2 litres a day and sometimes even three litres. Its effect on the body should not be underestimated and it is the worst thrash you can pour down your throat.

I have completely substituted Coke for Sparking Water and drink about 1.5l to 2l of Sparking Water each day now instead and good share of tap water also. After giving up Coke I noticed several distinct changes in my body, I have more energy and quite often before would go for a glass of coke first thing in the morning to get that sugar/caffeine hit straight to the brain to wake me up.

I wake earlier in the mornings as I can sleep better at night as before I would be in such a caffeinated state that I could go to bed at 11pm and not fall asleep until 3am. This would lead to irritability and a bad mood the following day. This was all being caused by Coca Cola and it is fair to say that I was well and truly addicted to it since I was a child. The taste of it now makes me gag and I don't know how I guzzled so many thousands of litres down through the years, no doubt my internal organs must be in repair mode the last few months.

One of the things which spurned me to give it up was my Dentist who when I visited her in January said your teeth are good now but then showed me some pictures of teeth destroyed by Coke and my vanity took over and it helped me get rid of the scourge of Coke from my life. I had already made a number of New Years Resolutions before that and I added giving up Coke to my list. It's amazing the influence a woman can have, had my Dentist been male I would probably have got all defensive to him!

I began to wean myself off Coke and onto Sparking Water during January and my tolerance for the Water increased and I began to guzzle it instead of the black liquid I had drank for so long. Nine months ago today on Feb 15th I poured the last 2ltr bottle of Coke down the sink and said goodbye to this horrible drink.

By June I had lost nearly a stone weight by just substituting Sparking Water instead of Coke. My skin has given me far far less problems this year wheras before I nearly always had some acne, zit or pimple on my face and body, I would say these incidences have reduced by around 75% by just cutting out this sugar laden drug.

Also and one of the nice things is by giving up Coke I have saved around €300 - €400 as I would typically drink between 7 and 10 2ltr bottles of Coke each week costing around €1.50 - €2.00 depending on multipacks & offers etc. I now drink maybe 6 to 8 2litre bottles of Lidl and SuperValue sparking water costing €0.49 to €0.79 for 2ltrs and a good share of tap water mixed in now. I prefer the SuperValue water as it has much more Fizz in it so mix them up.

9 months clean and feeling far better!

Sparkling water is not a good idea either, in the quantities you are drinking.
    Well done on the coke.

I beat alcohol so I know how you feel.

I absolutely hate sparkling water, don't understand how anyone can enjoy it

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

Mmmmmm Coke. Have kicked the habit. Fall down every once in a while but for the most part, its club orange lite for me. And I do feel better for it. Just have the odd coke as a treat

Coke should only be drunk from glass bottles or cans, anything else just does not taste right for some reason.

The amount of people that bang on about coke and hookers, I have to try it out one of the days and see if it lives up to the hype!

2 to 3 litres of Coke a DAY?????

    Cider, maybe, but Coke? Eeeewww!

Seriously, fair balls for quitting this vile drink. It's so bad for you and is the root cause of obesity and diabetes.

The sparkling water is a great idea.....but if you're gonna drink it you might as well get even more health benefits from it.
I usually give up alcohol completely for a month once or twice a year (my booze Ramadan).
During this time I drink loads of sparking mineral water. But what I usually do is pour it into a pint glass with a load of ice cubes so it's mega-frosty and also pour in a good shot of pure orange, grapefruit, or lemon juice.

You can almost hear your liver and kidneys crying out in gratitude as they are showered with the purifying goodness.

Are you addicted to the feeling of ice cold fizzy liquid going down your throat?

I love that feeling when you're dying for a drink, I know it doesn't quench your thrist but it just hits the spot that water just can't do.

How do you get your caffeine now ?

They should label coffee, tea , soft drinks with the levels of caffeine in them so you can optimise your intake.

Carbonated drinks are linked to osteoporosis as they interfere with calcium absorption. Well done on quitting Coke, but you should drink still water. It's free - for now -too.

Nothing better than taking a good slug of coke, followed up with a massive 'coke belch'. They make me feel like a giant.

Well done OP I went off fizzy juice a few years ago for lent and never went back on it. I physically can't drink it now, too fizzy and doesn't quench thirst at all!

As for coke, one of my friends was challenged to go off it for a month, come the end of the month she couldn't wait to get a drink..lo and behold she had a can and was nearly sick after - can't stand the taste of it now.

Just shows ya eh? I did the same wih crisps actually, mad when you havnt had a packet for so long, all you can taste is the oil/grease in them!

It's so mank. If there's fizz, there needs to be flavour of some kind.

On a bit of a water diet myself. I like a can of coke or 7up with my lunch, but aim for about 2 ltrs of water a day too.

A few months ago i took up the healthy lifestyle and it's made a world of difference to my working life as well as my social life. I was amazed at how much changed, just by goin to the gym a few times a week and eating proper unprocessed foods. Unfortunately its not cheap, but definately worth it. Even recovering from hangovers is quicker.

I would be careful of that amount of sparkling water tho OP. Try move towards still as much as possible. You can get 6x1.5 ltrs of River rock still, for €3.50 in tesco. One bottle of that a day and you'll be brand new shampoo.

    well done

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,294 ✭✭✭rainbowdrop

    Thats actually pretty inspiring OP.

It's after giving me the notion to try and kick my red bull habit. It's bad for me, plus I can't really afford to be drinking 2-3 cans a day like I do at the moment.

I knew someone that worked for Coca-Cola and said they used to clean the machinery with coke itself in the factories, imagine what it does with your insides after a few years

    Still delicious though.

People think he's joking but he's not. I knew people in college who were addicted to it, they 'had to' drink it everyday or they'd get headaches. I thought it was incredibly sad

I wouldn't exactly call Coke Zero methadone compared to CocaCola.

I'd be more inclined to compare it to Krokodil, that nasty stuff that does the rounds in ex Soviet bloc countries.

I kicked my coke habit about 10 years ago, I'd easily have two litres a day and craved it constantly. It made me put on weight, feel lethargic, bad skin etc.
I only drink it very occasionally (didn't use any alternative as a substitute) I mainly drink water now and the occasional cup of tea. Thankfully I don't like coffee so that was never an issue.
I've great skin rarely get spots and have far more energy.
I've don't have any filings even though I was addicted to the stuff for years.

Agreed, but i buy 6 2ltr bottles from Aldi every week and a couple of bottles of diluted orange, mixed together and a few ice cubes added is really nice and not as sweet as a can of fanta so it really quenches the thirst.
