Do you need a FB account to use Spotify?

You don't - there are ways to sign up without it

I don't listen to music much, I think if I was made pay for it I wouldn't bother at all.

I used to have a last.fm but then I found grooveshark which does the same thing for free. For the rare occasions I do play music that has all I need.

God I just looked on my iPod, 1186 purchased songs from Itunes. Feel a bit of a tit now :(

haha thankfully I dont know what you mean. I used to pay for CD's and rip them into my pc but then I discovered torrents(kat.ph etc)

    Why?

For €9.99 a month you listen to whatever you want, wherever you want
All legit - all readily available

No torrents, no synching, no storing

Yeah but sure Grooveshark is free. Maybe spotify has a bit more on it though. But not much unless it's something really obscure.

Some artists earn $50 million a year....they make enough money as is, so do all the record labels. It not as if they are struggling to pay bills!!!!

Yes, some being a very small amount in the grand scheme of things, that's the same thing as saying business man in a multimillionaire because Some have been hugely successful and anyway what gives you the right to decide how much a person should earn.

dont care about how much they earn, just saying they aren't exactly short on cash.

Yes the top 20% do quite well, but after that the majority musicians would make the average industrial wage and less.

Alot of people here would want to do a bit of research before they start spouting **** as facts, there's been alot of it so far in this thread.

Ah I remember the days when people paid for music. The record companys were cute f**ckers back then, creating myths that they could sue people for downloading 1 song without paying

I'd never pay to download music, the idea just seems a bit strange to me. If I do want to pay for the music, I'll buy a physical copy of it. I won't shell out for just a few files when I could have an actual CD/vinyl for just a few quid extra.

Or in many cases less for CDs. If the CD you're buying is a few years old it's often significantly cheaper to buy it on Amazon/Play than to download the mp3s from iTunes or similar paid services.

I love MP3s. Not because of the music, but because it demonstrates how full of crap music lovers are. See, I'm old enough to remember when MP3s first started going mainstream. I'm also old enough to remember when regular people started getting internet connections.

See, before then, people were always talking about the big music business and how it produced soulless crap. Mostly these people just wanted to feel smug, or mention their 'band' that is like a MILLION TIMES BETTER than this 'pop crap they play on the radio'.

Back then, as the internet was catching on - all these indie music types started talking about the end of big record labels. Soon it would be cheap and easy for ANYONE to record commercial quality music and distribute it all over the world - instantly. No more selling out to get played on radio stations that were run by fat cat corporation types.

Only, the internet got more and more popular, everything got cheaper and cheaper. And what happened?

We have the exact same crappy mainstream music. It's just now everyone steals it! It's too crappy to pay for, but not too crappy to download? :)

    I love it.

And all of the sold out concerts for independent bands who distribute via the internet? LoLz - never happened.

People also used to say they'd *totally* pay for music online - if only it were an option. No seriously, people used to argue that all the time. 'I'm not going to buy a whole CD, I just want this one song, but I can't get it - so I download'.

Now, of course, there are tons of music stores and you could buy anything you want. But people would still rather just pirate. So they do. At least they are running out of excuses....

Artists should look at it as promotion. People down load some of their stuff that they would never have payed for, enjoy it and then pay to go see them, when if it wasn't for free downloads that person might never have been turned on to them so really they have lost nothing. Free downloads is the cost of doing business in the broadband age. Just my €0.02.

I'm not paying you €0.02. I just read it for free. Got it on d'internet.

I pay to download music in lossless format. The likes of bandcamp and certain labels like boomkat are great for being flexible with how you get the music delivered.

I don't think I'd ever pay money for 'lossy' formats like .mp3, .m4a.. etc.

That may or may not be true; but surely it should be up to the owners/creators of the content to decide, shouldn't it?

If someone wants to put up their music for free on the internet; more power to them. I know a LOT of bands nobody has ever heard of that are not popular who have websites where you can download their music for free.

But how does that justify someone pirating music from owners/creators who DON'T allow it?
