With the prices of the VLM flights, I doubt very much that the clientele were the non-driving sort.

As a matter of interest, how much was a typical return flight to London or Birmingham?

Booking early in advance I paid 145 to birmingham (Friday was the special offer fare and sunday was the midrange fare)

A year previous Flybe where offering flights to Birmingham and Manchester for about 80 if you booked early. Obviously prices rose if you didnt grab the cheap flights.

I still didnt mind paying the extra few bob for VLM. Was able to bring a bigger bag and the free cuppa was always nice. The lack of a bus service wasn't ever a problem either for me, but then I like to think I am not helpless and precious enough to not share a cab with fellow passengers.

Is sharing a cab not the same/similar as a bus?

Should have stayed quiet, fella ;)

What time were the flights? To get a bus that early in the morning you'd be competing with the school run so there may not be too many buses available to do the run to the airport at the time needed.

A few 8 seater taxis would probably do the job. You could surely work out a decent deal with Rapid Cabs to provide 3 8 seater taxis to run. Once in the morning. Once in the evening.

Gone from buses to taxi's but don't they have the latter already or more to the point didn't they!

haven't heard a thing, would love to see it though they had good load factors in WAT and although they served us with the Prop planes they where bigger than the ATRs and Fokkers that traditionally serve WAT

Would be great if there is any truth in it.

If it was online it'd be all over here! It probably wouldn't be rumour either!

Didn't hear any more than I've stated above and 2nd hand at that from somebody with connection to the airport. Yes, I know that's fairly vague, was hoping somebody would firm it up or shoot it down.

stobart and flybe are agreeing to fly more routes I believe, it might be covered under these

I would be curios to see who would operate such a flight, currently the only airline at Luton who I would see operating it are Fly-Kiss a small regional French airline. Otherwise it could be VLM returning in its new form or a new airline entereing Luton Flybe/Stobart maybe, anyway exciting times if its true.

    Did anyone read the article?

Reported Stobart and Flybe may announce routes from Southend on Thursday. I really hope it's not SEN.

Just briefly, but if my understanding is correct, the website, branding, marketing, etc. is a local start-up and the aircraft, crews, maintenance, etc. are being provided by some Danish company who specialise in this sort of thing.

Will be interesting to hear more, such as schedules, aircraft type, and of course destination! Hopefully Luton...

    Thanks

Danish Air Transport have a fleet of ATRs and have often subbed to Stobart in the past. Not sure what other danish options there are. Also JetTine.

I didn't read the article now as I work away so can't get my hand on the N+S but I noticed that flybe and Southend are announcing routes tomorrow but what you just mentioned would suggest Waterford is not going to be part of that

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,791 ✭✭✭dzilla

Flybe with Southend is a no go I believe -  we are not in their announcement of the 12 airports they expanding on.

I believe that a route to Luton with Danish Air Transport is what the announcement will be. Would be very happy with this.

John Halligan has announced that we have received funding. But no airline has been announced on today.

Hopefully something off the back of the funding will happen. Haven't been home so still have not read this news and star article.

John Halligan has announced that we have received funding.
Dept of transport website press release regarding funding.
Hopefully something off the back of the funding will happen
It specifies operational costs not subsidising a new route.

Following the loss of the VLM service Waterford Airports income would have dropped somewhat.

Hence the larger amount been allocated to Waterford in this tranche.

If there is a viable market for a service then eventually a provider will be found.

The crux of the matter is the price people are willing to pay.
This little detail feeds directly into the viability element.

The crux of the matter is the price people are willing to pay.

€14.99 each way to Britain and a bit more to Barcelona/Rome/Amsterdam et al. This is what the rest of the country pays from their local airports.

We're not looking for Ryanair style pricing, even Aer Lingus doesn't even offer prices that cheaply. People have to stop hoping for Ryanair to come back - its never going to happen (at least not in the next 5+ years).

I'd happily pay ~€60-100 one way, depending on the date for the privilege of flying from the airport 15 minutes away by road. Flybe was around €30 (minimum) back when they were offering BHX & MAN.

We'll find out soon anyway. :);)
