An old woman who used to live with us would say this (She died in 1982 at age 89):
"You must eat a stone of salt with someone before you can put coal on their fire."
Meaning: you must eat enough dinners with someone (that would amount to having eaten a stone of salt), before you would know them well enough to put coal on their fire.

If you said to her that someone was really nice person, she would reply, "It is a wonder they don't go around killing the people".:)

    She was full of wisdom.

Like that apocryphal butcher's sign 'Four pigs feet £1' and the customer expecting 16 feet!

An earlier poster said something similar,

"where ere you go let your wind blow free,
Twas the holding it in was the killing of me"

Said to have been seen on a tombstone in the Jerrum.
