stopped listening to newstalk in the morning a long time ago so couldnt compare the two sets
gilroy and byrne were shocking poor though
    everything was so scripted
    interviews so stiff
neither were sharp / sophisticated enough to flow with the interviewee

I was watching their breakfast show on Newstalk TV one morning. Claire couldn't stop yawning. Maybe she's just not a morning person? :D

Richard SadLiar as new football pundit? They'd be better off with dead air than him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,165 ✭✭✭✭Cienciano

figured he could move into current affairs.

him and claire byrne were totally embarrassing.
    two clueless idiots
i've heard college radio shows that were more professional

has rebuilt his rep now in sports.
long term i doubt he wants to be presenting ofb, whatever form it takes..

I thought Ger was good on the breakfast show. Agree that Claire Byrne was totally embarrassing. When they were letting one go from that slot, I was shocked to hear it was Ger. But from Newstalks statements, they must think she gets the female listeners. But it seems for some reason radio stations are falling all over themselves to get Claire Byrne in.

Because she's good looking although why that matters on radio god knows.

Some guy called Joe is supposed to be hosting the weekend sport. He's the newsreader who worked with Gilroy on the programme previously, I wonder will Ciaaaaaaan Murtagh!! take a more prominent role today as well.

He was the producer not just the newsreader.

I mean this with the utmost of respect but while you are perfectly entitled to your opinion, to suggest dead air would be better than richard sadlier as football pundit is to completely lack any understanding of his ability to analyse the game. In fact sadlier is held in high regard by many in the footballing / journalistic worlds as a sharp straight talking no nonsense analyst who unlike most journos is a former pro footballer. People may find his style curt and blunt but it shouldnt be misinterpreted, this guy knows and talks a good game.

"Midway through the season in which I picked up the injury which eventually finished my career, I was aware Rangers were one of the clubs interested in signing me."

Anyone who thinks for a single second that the now dead club Rangers were ever going to sign a ROI international player is not a student of history.

Sadlier put that story to print because he wanted to make a career for himself as a pundit. And sure why not have a petty dig at Celtic fans while he's at?

If he can put such an obvious bull story to print he has zero respect for the reader.

I know a few St Pats fans who saw Sadlier's time at the club as embarrassing and yet we are told he is knowledgeable about football?

Sadlier has just taken Dunphy's model of punditry and copied it. He's a watered down less knowledgeable version of Eamon.

Don't worry about it, it was a lame attempt at some humour on my part. :P

To be fair they're probably too busy sourcing tasers and electrified fencing for the next OTB roadshow :pac:

That's true I apologise, I don't like to run a man down but I was unaware of his status.

Unliked the OTB facebook page myself and havent tuned into the show except to hear Gilroys flippant excuse for the OTB Five's absence on the first night. Great article by Dion Fanning in todays indo http://www.independent.ie/sport/other-sports/radio-beancounters-switched-off-to-diamond-in-their-midst-29120496.html about the whole affair.

i'm confused, so they wanted hook's show to move an hour earlier, so he starts at 3.30 instead of 4.30? that makes little sense. moncrieff deserves his slot more than most on newstalk.
i'd be wary of dion fanning though, the sindo staff is probably the last bastion of the o'reilly's as denis o'brien exerts his influence over INM.

Another good piece in the Sindo by Declan Lynch...

    http://www.independent.ie/opinion/analysis/declan-lynch-their-work-done-ken-and-co-take-leap-into-legend-29120459.html

    as mention in the above...

(Did anyone get The Sunday Business Post today? The blurb on Google says "Confidential correspondence seen by The Sunday Business Post puts more ... The Business of Media: How Newstalk's 'Off The Ball Five' met their match. 02:55 ..." Just wondering has anything new emerged?)

It's a small country. And a small business. How much of this coverage is unbiased? I reckon the lads all had mates in the press. Well, we'll see if they get re-employed. I hope they do. But all the frenzy on the interweb mightn't help them.

    A good piece? really? "good"

I'd call that something so bad a proctologist would be embarrassed about it.

"The Off The Ball team are all first-rate, but Ken Early is even better than that. I believe that Ken is a broadcasting genius, a once-in-a-generation talent, a Gay Byrne, a Jonathan Ross, a Danny Baker"

Oh dear god that is bad, I had to stop reading at that for fear I'd see my Sunday lunch again.

That is a horrifyingly bad puff piece of tabloid hack-ery.

Well, you're entitled to your opinion.

I think Fanning and Lynch wrote what they did simply because they liked the show. I doubt that they had an other agenda. Lynch has written similar articles about OTB before. I can't really see how the interweb "frenzy" could harm them really.

I don't think anyone objective would ever describe Ken as either a "broadcasting genius" or a "once in a generation talent"

That is cringe worthy and utterly untrue.

I think he is very talented, he is the reason why I listened to OTB. Would I go as far as calling him a broadcasting genius? Probably not, but I didn't write it.

Sadlier's analysis is nothing like Dunphy's imo. Dunphy simply spouts whatever will sound controversial a la George Hook analyzing rugby.

Sadlier is articulated, knows what he's talking about without bluffing & sounds like he does his homework, unlike the 'senior' RTE panelists.

dion fanning was a regular contributor to the show. i would be slow to take his opinion too seriously, given that he is employed by his step-mother, who took over from his late father.
