I love when guys start pulling our their fantasy Newstalk line ups....

I'd say George has a bit of Alex Ferguson type genes and is not near retirement at all. I can see him going for another five years +

I think Ger Gilroy is an excellent broadcaster, I loved his weekend shows. Unfortunately, he doesn't make up for the absence of the lads as they were also excellent, so they'll always be missed, regardless of the talent of their replacements.

Reading their Twitter interaction of the last few days, they're really giving the impression that they've nothing lined up. It was their call, so I guess it's what they wanted (considering how long it seems to have been going on for), but I really feel like the five of them have made a horrible mistake.

This parallel may have been drawn before, but it reminds me of the time Tim Lovejoy left Soccer AM to go off and make his fortune. Ruining both Soccer AM and his own career. Sometimes you should be happy in your niche. I rarely watched Soccer AM after Lovejoy left, and probably won't listen to OTB again (I mainly listed to the podcast).

I'm not sure I could ever see the attraction of Lovejoy either on Soccer AM or since. Can't see how he's got a career at all.

Also can't say I'll miss Ken Early - in my opinion the worst match commentator I've ever listened to.

let's start a collection and buy newstalk so we can install our own line up.

i've got 4.50stg in my pocket.

    who's in with me?

I just love all the scheduling and rearranging of National stations on a whim! Lets straighten things out first.

OTB is gone, finished, over - as the famous mural in Derry reads "Slán abhaile" - move on.

The fixation on Cooper taking over for Hook is ridiculous - again look at the numbers (attached) - who you going to replace Cooper with and the 160,000 listeners??

[That's an interesting story in the Phoenix - looks like the five of then started sulking in early Jan and handed in their notice then!]

no it's not, it's just got new presenters.

according to their statement, they had been working on the issues for 18 months. according to balls.ie, they were placated with promises from management. they were dicked about, more than they were dicking about

If you look at Today FM there are a number of shows that would fit better into a Current Affairs/Sport station.

Are Today FM not under some obligation to have a certain speech quotient in their programming. Not saying it can't be renegotiated with the Broadcasting Authority, but presumably they couldn't just unilaterally pawn those shows off to Newstalk.

I can't bring myself to listen to OTB any more, I really enjoyed the personality of the old presenters, the fun they brought to the show and the spark is gone. I really miss the show and won't listen until they hit the airwaves again... just have to hope it is soon :(:(

That mindset leads to exploitation in the end.

None of us (I think) know what their salaries or other terms and conditions were. If Dunphy is to be believed they and others were buying their own newspapers to review.

They were victims of their own success really. If the show wasnt such a hit there wouldnt have been a problem.

We will see. I very much doubt it.

Can't see Gilroy wanting to do the show long-term either. He stepped away from it years ago for a reason and had a nice thing going as sports editor and weekend presenter until the lads left. I'm sure he hadn't planned on being on air every weeknight as well on top of that. He'll probably do it until they can get someone to take it on.

He made a bad move in ever leaving it in the first place.

figured he could move into current affairs.

him and claire byrne were totally embarrassing.
    two clueless idiots
i've heard college radio shows that were more professional

has rebuilt his rep now in sports.
long term i doubt he wants to be presenting ofb, whatever form it takes..

That is over harsh, they were a lot better than the 2 current incumbents.

Just spent lunchbreak reading Ken's musings on the twitter machine.

Seems very keen to be back on the air.

My prediction is he might be back alone with his tail between his legs in due course. Remember, he goes way back with Gilroy - McDevitt doesnt.

stopped listening to newstalk in the morning a long time ago so couldnt compare the two sets
gilroy and byrne were shocking poor though
    everything was so scripted
    interviews so stiff
neither were sharp / sophisticated enough to flow with the interviewee

If you are talking sharpness and sopistication, there's Ger and Claire's level - then 50 feet of crap - then you get to Chris Donohoe's level.

Lets keep this discussion about OTB, any Newstalk line-up changes or general complaints put them in the Newstalk Megathread http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055236069&page=361 .

Ger and Joe are filling in for now, that's what we all assume anyway, I can understand that Ger has other commitments and won't want to do the late nights and long days etc.. but surely Joe would want to move onto something bigger, no idea of his personal life but he could come in as producer, a show that big would usually require two producers, or one and a few researchers. Beyond that we need to think about the station as a whole they need to hire a GAA correspondent, a Football correspondent and a Rugby correspondent to replace those lost, so through that they will begin rebuilding the show.

Richie Sadlier would make a good replacement for Ken. Very different, some pro experience but not too serious at all.

Ger himself isn't really the problem, it's the team around him.

Yeah I said before that Sadlier would be good for the football show at least, was he on with Ger this week at all?or is he going down the road of US Murph and waiting to see how things pan out.

Not sure if he was on, post's from earlier in the week seem to suggest he wasn't on his usual slot. Is US Murph not coming on because the lads left?

Sadlier would be interesting to have on, maybe him and someone else doing the football show. Or having him as an expert with the host while doing their regular interviews with Graham Hunter, Sid Lowe etc... can't see him coming in for a newsround like Ken every day, also the Football correspondent would need to be going to games at the weekend.

The new football show podcast is brutal. League of Ireland, taking to psychologists. Big ****ing yawn honestly. I want to like the new lineup until the boys re surface again but the current show is awful.

Actually I just flicked through the pod there and it was 27 minutes of roddy Collins and 17 from graham hunter and co. Honestly how can anyone listen to roddy Collins for that long.

    Rubbish.

Some guy called Joe is supposed to be hosting the weekend sport. He's the newsreader who worked with Gilroy on the programme previously, I wonder will Ciaaaaaaan Murtagh!! take a more prominent role today as well.
