It'll take forever to download for the first couple of days with everyone updating.......

It is good to get a few changes. Maybe people with a 4S will appreciate it a bit more with Siri updates and the panoramic camera etc (I think thats on the 4S) but people on the 4 wont notice much difference. Ive had it for about 2 months now (on iPhone 4). Nothing major at all.

    Remember IOS 5? Mayhem.

I think it was so bad because iMessage and that was coming. Everyone wanted to have it. Will people be falling over themselves to get IOS6?

I already regret upgrading & losing Google Maps. That may put others off.

The Gold Master version is out now if you don't want to wait until tomorrow. Normally identical to official release.

I think my favourite new feature is Do not disturb.

Interesting points being made here as to what we'll gain and lose. I'm a big fan of Sparow Mail. Unfortunately it doesn't have Push and the fix is only via Cydia, so unless Mail has some big improvements I may hold off. I use Siri a lot for texts, calendar and calls so it'll be interesting to see if there's any localisation in ios6.

Will be waiting for the Google Maps App. Not going to risk the new apple maps.

iOS 5 was actually release before 6pm. So we'll have it earlier in the day. It would be nice if they released it tonight but I doubt it

Understand why Apple are dropping Google maps but you'd imagine they wouldn't dump it until their own product is perfected?

3D flyover is a nice gimmick but that's all it is. In practical terms it's as useful as tits on a bull. Street view is where it's at.

That WILL only work in the US

Not true, I've seen London version of it (on BBC video about iPhone 5) and also a Dublin version of it.

Not au fait with the updates as i've only had the 4s a short while.
I have google maps on it so am i right in saying I couldn't have ios 5?
And if I upgrade to 6 I'll lose google maps?

Feck that, google maps worth a whole lot more to me than panorama pics.

Yeah in a different thread somebody posted pics of Dublin in Flyover. It is available for a small part of Dublin.

Until google release an app you can just use the web page browser and then add a book mark to the home page. Not perfect but will do ...

    Wrong actually. Try again?

This is the first iOS update that I won't be downloading. Both my ipad 2 and iphone 4 are jailbroken on 5.1.1 and I dont want to switch over to a crap map service.

There's nothing mad appealing on iOS6 to push me to updated.

That being said, my iphone 5 (if i upgrade) will be iOS6 but I use a second phone for my travel sims so will keep iphone 4 as it.

You will find that if you don't upgrade to ios6 that newer apps that require it won't run lots of games won't run on anything before ios5 . I can't see how it's a big deal to download Google maps from the app store for free and use that . The YouTube app is going too but the one from the store is already available and is actually better !

Do the update and just get the newer better apps from the store after . I am currently running iOS6 and it's grand .

The Apple 3D Flyover thing works fine in Dublin, but only between the canals I find. Anything outside of that is a no go.

Isn't it the nub of the issue that the Google Maps App is not available to download yet? Hence if you update to ios6 you will lose it until it is available in the app store?

just restore the phone to get iOS 5 back. Do it before the update is released later though

You didn't have to. maps.google.com is fine.

The mapping partnership with Waze has a big potential. For those of you that haven't used Waze mapping it allows you to send updates to nearby users - i.e. you can say traffic is heavy here, roadworks on this road, speed camera here etc. Whether any of that will be employed by Apple I've no idea, but if they did it would be great.

What's the story with Passbook? Probably will lack much support in Ireland initially. Is it a stand alone app or included? Those of you on iOs 6 have you been able to use it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,396 ✭✭✭Fingleberries

Slightly off the topic of maps, but at least the setting for Bluetooth it now up to the top page in Settings (rather than four clicks down as it has been in all earlier versions of iOS).

To be fair to Apple on this one - Google maps sucked initially also (and in some places it still does (its sent me wrong a few times) - I guess mapping an entire planet and putting it on the internet is a data intensive time consuming process.

But on the whole I just think all this Apple vs Android war is stupid and this move mostly just annoys me

Yeah but a few users have downloaded the GM seed and some of the features Apple list as 'Not Available' in Ireland actually are.

You are reading it wrong. Only 3d buildings in Navigation is not here. That's like a street view thing on turn by turn navigation not the flyover function.

That's an overly pessimistic list that Apple have there. Siri doesn't support Hiberno-English, so pretty much nothing is supported regarding Siri in Ireland, however, if it can understand your accent, most of it's services (apart from specific local search/booking functions) will work just fine. As for flyover, between the canals in Dublin obviously isn't a large enough area to have Ireland down as being covered. When Dublin 6 and 4 are included as well, then that will mean Ireland is covered :)

I've no doubt apple maps will improve over time..

Though I do think that google maps not being default will be good for quality as both google and apple maps will have to be excellent, or folk will just use which ever is better..

As for the apple android war.. Again two companies outdoing each other the whole time can only be good for consumers I think.

Yeah, tis a nice change but now they have moved 'Location Services' so that its more awkward to turn on & off. Not good as I find it drains battery so i like to turn it on & off when I need it

One thing that always bothered me on IOs is that you only have one location services covering GPS and GSM location. Android gives you control individually over each. By default I don't want location services on - but when I do I only want to use GPS. IOs won't let me do that

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,675 ✭✭✭ronnie3585

Is there any word on when/if Google will be releasing a stand alone Google Maps App?

Think I'm going to hold off updating to iOS6 as I use Google Maps a lot and Apple's attempt looks pretty poor.

There shouldn't be any need to do that. Find the app that isn't playing nice and disable location services for just that app. It's possible System Services are the culprit - I have them all turned off.

You know what bugs me most about iOS and no one seems to talk about it.

The App store, every time you download an app or an update it kicks you out to show the app installing.

Drives me mad, want to stay in the App store and let download/installation run in background.

I think that's one of the changes happening in iOS 6. I'm just not sure if it'll happen today with the iOS update, or next month with the iTunes update.
