When and how do we pay the registration fee/tuition fee etc?

Could somebody please fill me in? I haven't a clue as regards to paying fees! I know there's so much information about it online and on the TCD website itself, but to be honest I've just been bombarded with so much information that I really haven't a clue where to start!

When are the fees due? How much do I have to pay if I'm a normal Irish school leaver going into their first year of college? Does the government pay for my tuition fees? Etc. Etc.!

I'm just so confused!

Thanks to anyone who replies!

I'd just like to add on to this: If our grant application's accepted, do we pay registration/tuition and then get the money, or do the grant folk pay TCD directly?

You'll be e-mailed those details. Payment is usually any time before Orientation I believe.
This year you'll be paying through my.tcd.ie with your student ID and password which the college will issue you with or have already issued you with.
The fees you pay this year in total are €2335 which breaks down as:
€2250 Student Contribution
€8 USI Levy
€77 Gym membership

This is separate to tuition fees which the government pays for if you're an EU Citizen.

This is crazy. I only started as an undergrad a few years ago and was paying €800 or so. I knew from the media that fees were going up, but I didn't realise the extent. So, someone who will have the same degree as me will have paid about three times more for it. Madness! The whole country's in a state o' chassis alright!

My total is €2,449. Same as above but I have a "Commencement" charge of €114. Does anyone know what this charge is for?

Commencement is graduation. I didn't know you paid it upfront. I recall paying mine later than that, some time into final year...

I'm only going into 3rd year of a 5 year course? Why would I need to pay for a graduation?

Oh I dunno then! I defo paid €114 for graduation and they call it commencement there, cos they're "special" and whatnot. No idea, maybe email the fees office?

• Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,935 ✭✭✭Anita Blow

Since this system is all new I'd say it's just a technical error.
Maybe wait til they e-mail us saying re-registration is officially open, and if it's still there, contact the Treasurer's Office.

I also have the commencement fee due and am going into 3rd year.

Cheers. Yeah I have no plan on paying the fees yet as a) I haven't got the money yet and b) I want to wait until we're told to pay it.

How did you get your total? Have they sent out the Bank Giro forms in the post?

Log onto my.tcd.ie and click the finance tab. You can then get your invoice there.

I don't know if this is way you're SUPPOSED to do things but I didn't know what to do last year either. I just went in and registered (didn't pay anything, didn't have confirmation of my grant/fees paid except the sports charge and the USI thing) and hoped for the best so eh  My grant wasn't confirmed until January but the grant folk paid my registration fee then as far as I know. I never got told I had to pay it since so I'm hoping they paid it anyway or I've done something very wrong :p

Saying that, I was convinced they wouldn't let me register because on the website it mentions something about paying the registration fee and then getting it back later.

I strongly suggest emailing College and finding out what you're meant to do in case there's any hassle because I'm not being very helpful. :o

This is optional, and you do not have to pay.

Would anyone happen to know if I have to pay the Sport Centre levy if I'm going on Erasmus? I know I have to pay the student contribution, but it seems silly to pay for something I can't possibly use.

How, though? There's no option on the online form for picking and choosing which parts of the fee to pay off (that I can see anyway).

I've heard that before but don't you have to jump through hoops to get it back?

According to the fees page
Tuition fees are (currently) paid by the Irish Exchequer. The student pays a Student Contribution (€2000 in 2011) plus a Sports Centre Levy (€77 for 2011), and a USI levy (€8 for 2011).
If a student is awarded a Local Authority grant the Student Contribution (€2000) may be paid by the Local Authority. The Sports Centre and USI Levy must be paid by ALL students.

RE: the fees thing you quoted. This is why I'm wondering where My Finances tab has gone. I know I have to pay the sports levy but clearly they don't want me to :p

There was previously an option for manually selecting a payment amount. I used to just put in the full amount, less the €8 USI charge. It may be gone now though, I haven't had to use epay.tcd.ie in two years.

I don't it's optional any more. However you will have a vote this year on whether we stay affiliated with the USI.

It says it on the bill. My deadline seems to be 1st September. They will be lenient this year I think because of the new system. Not to mention the fact that a transfer takes a couple of days, so it won't be there by the 1st and we have yet to receive contact from the office.

I haven't gotten any information at all about paying. (New student here.) Should we not just wait until they email us about it?

1st years are normally expected to pay before registration/student card, so as long as the fees are in before you collect your card you should be ok. I think the date for my year was a week or so after continuing students had to pay.

On an aside, has anyone emailed college about the situation with continuing students? 1st September is a bit soon considering most of us have yet to be emailed...

Those look like full EU fees to me. I'm not 100% but I think you're not meant to pay the tuition fees.

You should be aware that Trinity are only setting up this online system for registration this year for the first time so there's bound to be lots of mistakes on the website. Keep an eye on it and if it doesn't change then get in touch with the college.

The government pays the tuition portion. You pay the Student Contribution, Sports Centre Charge and USI Levy which amounts to €2335 this year

I'm an incoming student too and I've had no word yet about the student contribution. However out of interest, what is the story with that book voucher for people over 560 points? Does that really exist, if so, do I have to do something else to get it?

Although the portal is a bit buggy at the moment, if you have the My Finances tab when you log in to http://my.tcd.ie you should see the breakdown of your fees and you should also be able to pay them. Last year, they sent out a bank giro form and a big pack of forms to all incoming students.

As for the book voucher, last year they were awarded to incoming students who got over 560 points. Although I haven't heard anything confirming this, i'd say they'll be raising the threshold to 585 points to account for bonus points from HL Maths.

Should incoming first years give their bank details in order to access the 'My Finance' tab ?

I don't think so. They don't have my bank details and don't need them to process any payment to them, whether that be credit card or a payment from my bank.

I'm technically going into 4th year. But until the results of that deferred exam I did this morning come through TCD aren't getting a penny. I do not qualify as a "continuing student". The last of the supplementals are on Friday week - so where do they fit ?
I think the whole 01/09/12 might be a typo. 1st October or even November makes far more sense.
I assume the SU are aware of this mess.

Considering we haven't actually received any emails telling us to check the new portal (And they told us they'd email us when it's ready) I think it's safe to ignore any due dates on it.

• Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 162 ✭✭NeuroCat

Having had numerous run-ins with the student finance office, I always err on the side of caution. I've found from personal experience they're not above throwing curve balls when it suits them regarding deadlines so I often think it's safer to follow their instructions to the letter and save any emails/correspondence in case you have any disputes. Also, if you speak to any of them on the phone note the date and time you called, and the name of the person you spoke to.

I emailed them about this. They said there had been no talk of changing it from 560 this year, regardless of the maths points, but if they did they'd edit the website immediately.

I think provided you get the money into the before registration you are ok.
All billing of tuition fees, student levies and graduation fees will be issued via my.tcd.ie. You will receive an email when your bill is available for viewing on-line via my.tcd.ie.

Does this mean they don't want us to pay our fees until we get another email telling us to do so??
Talk about confusing.

Typical, they send us the email after I get home from work on the day I've sorted it out for myself. Anyway, for anyone who's interested:

I went to the fees office and asked about the deadline situation and that I have to pay by EFT. They said I'm not expected to pay until I get the email (which I guess is the one we all got yesterday) but that if I'm worried about the EFT not getting through in time I can technically pay whenever I want. So I went to the BOI branch in the Arts end and did the EFT there. I asked the woman there if anyone else had been in yet, and she said no. I know that the vast majority of people will be paying by card, but from what she was telling me, pretty much no one has paid yet (at least not with them) so they'll have to be lenient on the deadline.

When I was in the fees office I also asked about the "Pre-registration" thing and he said that you just log in and let it know about what funding you have. As a continuing student my grant details were already in it, so all I did was press next and finish and that's that.

I really have to say, with the absolute mess they've made of this process, the guy in the fees office seemed to have a very clear idea of what's going on, so if you have a query it's probably best to just go in to them.

Edit: Forgot to say, with regards to the EFT, because I was transferring from one BOI account to another, the woman said that it wouldn't take a week, more like a day, to process. So the deadline isn't quite as scary as it seems if you have a BOI account.

They do exist, and no, you don't need to do anything - if you've got the points, they'll send them to you in the post in October and there's a sort of ceremony for it in November.

You get €150 in JF (1st) year and €150 in SF (2nd) year. When I got them, they were for Waterstones or Hogdes Figgis but I'm not 100% sure now because Waterstones is gone, so they might have changed that. Hodges Figgis is still there though and it's pretty good for most courses textbooks. I'm a language student though, so vouchers for there were no use for me when it came to course books! :(

It's been 560 points for the last few years, but it was 550 before that. They would only raise it if the numbers with over 560 were too much for the funding available. But I guess they could also reduce the amount of each voucher instead if that happened. They'll let you know about it in October anyway :)

This was sent to me on the 27th.
Dear Student

The way that we do things in College is changing
Further to my communication to you in July, I write to inform you that we have made significant advances in changing the way that we do things in College. Trinity has invested in a brand new student information system which is now accessible to all students via the web portal my.tcd.ie.

How will I get access to the web portal?
You are now welcome to access my.tcd.ie by using your existing College username and password.

What do I need to know now?
· Registration for all students (both new entrants and continuing students) will be carried out online via my.tcd.ie.
· All undergraduate students will be invited on a phased basis, by course group, to register on-line. You will receive an invitation to register via my.tcd.ie from September 10 onwards.
· Once you have successfully completed on-line registration, you will be able to collect your TCD student ID card in person from the Luce Hall. Please see the ID card collection schedule.
· All billing of tuition fees, student levies and graduation fees will be issued via my.tcd.ie. You will receive an email when your bill is available for viewing on-line via my.tcd.ie.
· All fee, levy and graduation payments will be carried out via my.tcd.ie using a Credit/Debit/Laser card. Payment can be made once your bill is available for viewing via my.tcd.ie. Please note that in order to complete registration all outstanding fees must be paid.
· Your course timetable will be available on-line via my.tcd.ie.
· Your personal details will be viewable on-line – you will be able to up-date some sections of this data.
· You will be issued with an anonymous ID number for assessment purposes in due course.

These are big changes – how do I get more information?
Over the coming weeks and months, further email updates will be provided by the College to your email account - please keep an eye on your email for updates. Trinity is working closely with the Students’ Unions on a full communications strategy to ensure that full information is provided to you as it becomes available. Information updates will be provided in the Students’ Union (SU) Diary, the University Times, SU website, SU weekly emails, SU blogs, the Graduate Students’ Union (GSU) handbook and the GSU weekly email.

Further Assistance
If you have any queries or require assistance, you may log an enquiry via my.tcd.ie. Alternatively, you can contact the Academic Registry Help Line (Monday – Friday; 09.00 - 17.00) Email: academic.registry@tcd.ie; Telephone: +353 (0) 1 896 4500.

I wish you every success in the year ahead.

Yours faithfully,

That doesn't help much if you're sitting repeats? I don't get my results until the 17th, and I'd hardly pay for the next year if I haven't passed this one.

Currently in a very VERY SLOW email conversation with someone who's trying to sort out 1) where's my finances tab 2) what I am meant to do re: grant/fees/results. This is getting really quite annoying.
