So, is there a problem with my PAL SMB3, doing the dodgy colour thing on the Famicom, or is this normal, given the game was probably optimised in some way for the PAL machine, given it's a late title for the format?

Does your modded famicom have faint vertical lines on screen in some or most games?
Common problem with the AV mod but doesn't seem to happen on every one.

So what are the Red Dwarf fans opinions on the episode then?

I'm not the biggest fan here but I do enjoy most of the seasons. I just looked up the season 3 episode with nodnol and a word of warning, dont click on the first tumblr link google gives you.
It involves "Enjoying big and hairy guys."

Really liked it, it was like old school Red Dwarf & am optimistic for the rest of the season :)

So it is a season then and not a lacklustre mini-series or special?

Yep full season with six separate & individual episodes. Descriptions here, I have to say they sound hilarious, especially 'Lemon'

I was very surprised at the production quality. It looked great.

I really enjoyed it, they seemed to capture the essence that made it great in the first place, it felt like it was back in the early seasons again.
Can't wait to see what comes next.
Even the Moose joke, wasn't sure where it was going but before you know it, it feels like it was always a Dwarfie joke, I can see the "Hey, Ho, Pip and Dandy!" t-shirts already!

Just went through my Nes collection to see if they worked on the Fami with no probs.
    Seems to be about 60/40.
Kirby works fine, so does SMB and DK Classics.

I did, however, discover I own Batman: Return of the Joker!
I was looking on ebay at buying it and there it was, in the back of the drawer!
Unfortunately it is one of those games that has a FAIL on the FC, on the second scene, with the airship, it takes a holiday in Background Flicker City, which is unfortunate.

Looks like I'm going to have to get a new 71 pin for the Pal NES after all, no need to retire it yet!

Better off with the 72 pin version :)

That's a shame, it's a brilliant game. Surprised at how much I dug it. Well, after you get over the fact Batman is using a gun. Well, not a 'gun' per se, according to the game's literature, but if this was a gun lookalike contest, whatever Batman's using would have to take top prize.

Well, regarding the whole Super Nintendo thing, I think an adapter is a small price to pay, as long as it can run the US titles in full speed. And I might get an overclocked console if I actually bother to find one.

As for the new series of Red Dwarf...wow, I guess I'm missing out.

But it won't. You need a modded console for that.

Ffs, PAL carts won't play on a US Snes, even with the tabs removed. Looks like I'll have to replace all my carts with JP/US counterparts.

Kinda confusing because many of my carts worked in the modded PAL Snes even with the region switch set to NTSC & at 60Hz

You sure it's not the games you are using? Some later games had extra region protection, earlier ones didn't afaik.

Yep just googling there, apparently is well known they don't work without disabling the lockout chip {which I don't want to do} or using an import adaptor {which I don't want to do either}.

The removal of the tabs lets you play NTSC-J only it would seem :(

Ugh, I really don't fancy tracking down a boxed & complete Zelda 3 given that I already have one. I wonder if I sold off what I have, would it balance out enough to basically replace with NTSC without costing me too much

SNES has a CIC region lockout chip as well, easily disabled though. mmmonkey should have a guide.

Sure I've done plenty of them, look at the links in my sig...I'm well aware how they work :)

What confuses me is why the likes of Aladdin, or The Magical Quest, worked in my PAL Snes set to NTSC & 60Hz...& don't work in my new NTSC Snes.

It's not too bad, I'll just replace them if needs be. I don't wanna go drilling holes in this console, nor do I want to do the Super CIC mod either, I just want it stock & have the games to go with it.

That's a pain. I use an NTSC snes myself (Famicom in my case) and all my PAL Snes games work.

Why don't you want to install the CIC chip mod as a matter of interest? Want to keep it stock?

I may take some of your PAL snes games down the road if you ever want to get rid of them.

Your PAL games work in your SFC?? That confuses me even more now! Actually no it doesn't, I region modded that didn't I (which disables the CIC causing no handshake mismatch)

I know the console has a CIC chip, the game cart also has an identical chip & they both 'handshake' at startup. If the CIC chip in the game doesn't match the one in the console, it throws up the 'Not For This Region' error screen. I don't even get that screen though, just a black screen for all games.

I just don't wanna mod the US Snes & keep it stock, removing the tabs are about as far as I wanna go with it. Feck it anyway, I'll prob just get NTSC games. Cidey might be interested in my CIB Return of the Jedi :D No bother o1s1n, I'll decide for sure what I wanna do & list them for trade/sale

Most Snes games dont use the CIC chip lock though. They're locked to 50/60hz. So most of my PAL games run on my NTSC Snes just by booting in 50hz and switching to 60hz.

The CIC chip thingy I barely have to use. Only with a select few games.

So you leave the switch set to NTSC, & the PAL games boot? I'm not even getting a wrong region screen, just a black screen

I set the switch to 50hz, boot up the PAL game in 50hz, then when it gets passed the initial screen, switch to 60hz. And there you go, PAL Snes games running in 60hz on a Famicom.

If I boot the PAL game in 60hz I get the wrong region error.

What games are you trying? Might be that most of them just happen to be CIC protected ones.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,729 ✭✭✭The Last Bandit

If the CIC handshake fails then the CPU is held in reset hence the black screen, the region mismatch screen occurs after the CIC handshake succeeds but the game itself detects a timing mismatch ie expects 50Hz but is running at 60Hz.

Its a stupid system really, both CIC's are identical devices but the console one runs in 'lock' mode and the cart in 'key' mode. But if both are of the same type then no handshake occurs and the CPU comes out of reset. The usual mod on the console lifts a pin with effectively sets the CIC in 'key' mode.

    Nice explanation, cheers.

I always wondered which came first, the CIC check or the timing one.
