Grooming down there

I dunno if I should start a thread on this - I did a search but didnt really find an answer-to do with with hair removal down there (lady gardening)/top of (inside) legs.

Does it itch when the hair grows back after waxing? Or would hair removal cream be better? How often does it need to be done? Ive shaved before, but OMG the itching (particularly where the knicker line meets the shaved bit) is unbareable.

It doesn't itch after waxing in my experience. It hurts to get it done but is many thousands of times less unpleasant than the itching I've experienced after shaving.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,844 ✭✭✭Honey-ec

Waxing FTW. I personally don't find it painful but I know some people think it's excruciating. Shaving/hair removal creams are a waste of time; you'll have regrowth within a couple of days. Waxing will keep you hair-free for a couple of weeks, with the added benefit that the more you have it done, the less regrowth you get. I get a Brazilian done every 5 weeks religiously.

You could also consider getting lasered. Yeah, it's a big expense upfront, but if you think of it in terms of the money you'd spend on hair removal over the years, it's often worth it. The only reason I haven't had it done is because it's not as successful on fairer hair and when I went for my patch test the therapist more or less told me it wouldn't be worth my while. Dark hair on fair skin has the best results with laser hair removal.

I would definately recommend waxing. It is painful at the time but that wears off after a half an hour or so and it usually lasts about 2.5-3 weeks. You might get some itching when it regrows but not much. Also you could get some ingrown hairs which kinda look like a slight rash but just use a gentle exfoliator for a few days and it goes away really fast.

I would also say go to a professional waxer, as in a place that caters just for waxing as they usually know what they are doing. Pop two painkillers about an hour before you go in and you it will take the major pain away!

Start with just a standard bikini line wax and then as you get more comfortable with the procedure you can get more off or different types! Best of luck!:D GD

I've had laser done. Like waxing painful when you're getting it done, probably more painful because you get about 100 whacks of the thing instead of a few strips of wax but if you've dark hair/pale skin it'll work a treat. Any regrowth between sessions is very fine and soft hair. You can only shave between sessions but once you've had a few done you only need to shave in the days coming up to your next session anyway. I've had 6 sessions but probably need a few more. I picked up an offer for 6 sessions on two areas(I picked bikini and underarm) for 79 and paid an extra 20 a session for extended bikini. On my last session when she saw it hadn't completely taken she offered me the same deal again.

The deal was underarms and bikini or two other areas so had to get underarms if I wanted bikini. Never would have thought of getting it done otherwise and it's awesome having it done and never having to think about it.:D

the only time i've had it done it definitely did not wear off after a half hour and it was extremely unattractive for about 2 days

yeah I had a friend like that too! she has very sensitive skin so it used to go really red and swollen after waxing.

Made for some jokes after she got her eyebrows waxed as it used to look funny..very mature I know.

Ladies, you need to make sure you get hot waxed, none of your strippy carry on!!! That damages the hell out of you. The hot wax cools and is pulled off without strips, it sticks to the hair but not to the skin, much less painful.

Now I will admit, the last girl I went to was very rough, I think she actually enjoyed inflicting pain on my lady bits, but that has never happened before, normally it stings but then it's over.

Find somewhere that does lycon wax or hot wax. Better yet, if you can find a salon that only does waxing you know you're in safer hands as that's all they do all day.

I highly recommend Brazilia in Sandyford, waxperts in Dun Laoghaire is great too but hard to get an appointment.

    that was the one :(
it wasn't lycon and it was a local place though, so i know it wasn't a good start or representative

    I shave my garden :)

I moisturise extremely well after I shave and then every day so I don't have the dreaded itch problem and I find it works really well for me.
I do it while I'm on the bath and I use conditioner rather than shaving gel.

I got waxed last year when I was going on holiday and to be honest I felt so uncomfortable and awkward, I cringe when I think about the whole experience to be honest. I'm a little tad strange like that :)

My sister goes to Brazilia in Sandyford and swears by them.

You could give it a go once and see how you get on - it might be for you :)

Never ever ever go for strip wax.

I was left battered and bruised a few times before I was introduced to the wonders of hot/peel able wax.

It hurts for a second but after that your flying.

Definitely try it again, it's just so unbelievably worth it, particularly as it makes the area more "sensitive", but in a good way :p

Yep there's a brazilia in Dublin city too. Also there is a place called the wax spot which I haven't used but it's supposed to be brilliant.

Is it possible the wax was too hot and you got burnt? That happened to me a few years ago. We arranged a last minute weekend away for my 30th and as my usual waxer was booked up I went to the nearest place I could get an appointment for, even though it was just a strip wax. While I was getting the wax done I thought it felt a bit hot but I didn't think too much of it, even though as the waxing went on it felt hotter and hotter. That evening on the drive to the place we were staying I started feeling really uncomfortable and when I got out of the car I found that I was feeling really sore and raw. When I got the chance to look I could see that my skin was all red and looked burned. Then it dawned on me that I'd taken a couple of strong pain killers ahead of the wax, so if I was feeling like the wax was a bit too hot, it was probably actually much, much too hot, I just couldn't feel it properly.

I don't think so, and I hadn't taken any pain killers. I think it could just have been a botch job, nice as she was. I really do have very annoyingly delicate fair skin - the pain of the wax itself would be tolerable for me (barely) and not put me off, if the results afterward hadn't been so awful.

+1 to this. I got my last wax about 6 weeks ago and I have only the barest hint of regrowth even now. I should be in and out in five minutes for my next session!

Waxing ftw. Although be sure to exfoliate. Ingrown hairs are horrid. Get Brazilian every 5 weeks, last time I went for the Hollywood.

Go to wax spot on Drury street. Lovely girl who does a great job.

Lucky you!! I've full on stubble after about 5/7 days and then you'd swear I hadn't even been waxed if you seen me after the two week mark !! *sigh*

I got a full hollywood wax 2 weeks before giving birth. No painkillers for the first time ever so I was nervous about potential pain, but there wasnt any. I reckon its definitely down to the skill of the therapist wielding the wax on the lollipop stick.

    Thanks girls.
Im not in Dublin (mid-west region).

I might look up the laser hair removal all together. Ive gotton it done on one part of me already (started about 9 mths ago), and the results are good, so far. Might need a top up at some stage. Why doesnt anyone tell you that as you get older you get hairier? :)

So much hair grooming/removal. I shave underarms/legs, wax lip, pluck eyebrows, cut hair on head. The list is endless and I will admit am very lazy to all this "grooming".

I looked it up on a Dublin salon's website (can't remember which salon) and it said if you're a redhead you can't do it :( I was going to look into it in a few years and all..

I got my first Brazilian today, so happy I plucked up the courage! The woman used both hot wax and strip wax on me and I actually preferred the strips! They stung for a few seconds afterward but the initial pull wasn't as painful, whereas with the hot wax I found the initial pull to be too much!

All my redness is gone too :)

Veet hair removal cream has never left me itching, and is way less painful than waxing, so I'd say its worth a try.

You're not supposed to put that stuff anywhere near your genitals  Chemical burns on your ladyparts is definitely not a good thing.

It might seem that way, but she would have used strips on the outer bikini area, if she had used them on the inside you would have thought different. Likewise, if she had used hot was on the outer area there would have been no sting at all.

I've always found waxing v painful and thought I'd really sensitive skin. The last time I got waxed my beautician knew her stuff and said unfortunately id really thick hair that grabbed loads of skin and follicle whenever I got waxed and the awful ingrown hairs would continue (sorry, prob tmi :o ). Boo anyway cos I loved the smoothness after a wax.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,713 ✭✭✭✭Novella

I get waxed and for me, it's much better than shaving. Like others, I also recommend the hot wax which cools as opposed to the strips which are ripped off. And I agree with Maple - exfoliate!

I got laser done for a similar reason. I used to be ruined for days after wax and hated the embarrassment each time. I opted for whole leg and bikini which is pricey. Have finished my original 6 sessions but need some more. Think it's worth it though for me

I'll be completely smooth for about a week and a half, then very fine regrowth starts to kick in. It's a minimum of 4 weeks before I'd have enough regrowth to be waxed again, though, and I usually leave it 5.

A friend of mine is the same, she also has very dark hair on very fair skin (not helped by PCOS) and she finally gave in and booked laser. She's getting full leg, Brazilian bikini line and underarms done for €995 in Therapie on Wicklow St., for anyone who's in Dublin and might be interested.

sames. The first time I got it done it looked great from about 2 days, and lasted ages, second time it took almost a week before it looked good (I was bruised n all!) but also lasted for ages. I just found the pain too bad, I tried to leave half way through the second one, but yer one was having none of it!
Tbh, I'm petrified of trying again. Can someone just clarify, both times they used hot wax and then a strip of cloth to pull it off, the hot wax people are referring to, this is different again?
I'm back to using veet again but it's nowhere near as nice, I wish waxing wasn't so painful for me.

Yes, the wax they used on you is known as strip wax (even though it's also hot). It's fine for use on legs and arms, but it can cause a lot of pulling when used on the bikini line. Hot wax is wax that's applied to the skin, which then "sets" and the therapist pulls off the piece of wax itself, rather than using a strip on top of it. It adheres to the hair follicle rather than the skin and is, theoretically, less painful than strip waxing. I never found strip waxing particularly painful anyway, so I can't comment on that aspect of it, but hot waxing is definitely quicker and cleaner.

Thanks for that. I'm still way too traumatised, but maybe sometime in the future I'll work up the courage and try the hot wax.

if you find waxing painful maybe try 'no scream cream' cant remember where i got mine but it was online somewhere.
you rub it in about an hour before a wax, not sure whats in it but it does kind of numb the area making it less painful.

not expensive either from what i remember.

I got chronic dermatitis on my underarms from Veet, the skin was all broken and I had to get steroid cream for it. Couldn't wear deodorant or anything. The skin hasn't been the same since; there's no way that stuff will be going near my ladyparts!

I love getting waxed, it doesn't even hurt that much (strip waxing), but it only lasts a week or so before I get regrowth. I'd be a good candidate for laser, except for the price :(

Don't you hate it when the beautician leaves little bits of wax behind, you're unsticking your jeans from your backside for the rest of the day!

The regrowth doesn't hurt at all. I get a Hollywood every six weeks or so (I'm sallow but have blonde hair) and it is relatively painless and there is no itching/rashing/ingrown hair). 5-6 weeks is the average for getting it done again and you are best to get it done regularly (it weakens the hair folicle) than holding out and waiting until you have a full lady garden. Go for the hot wax and if you are in Dublin feel free to PM me and I will give you the name of a couple of good places. You won't shave again once you have found a good therapist. As for the increased sensitivity.....! ;)

No, I use it everywhere. If your careful with it and time it correctly then there's no reason why it would burn your skin. I only burned myself once with it, but that was my own stupidity 'cause I left it on too long, but honestly it wasn't too bad. It burned for the rest of the night, but I put Aloe Vera gel on it and the next morning I was fine ^.^

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,327 ✭✭✭Madam_X

It's not the worst pain and it's very quick, but it's uncomfortable and the build-up is awful. And it takes ages. The thing makes a really horrible, loud zapping noise and then the follicle is literally burned.
Depends on the person though - I never found waxing that painful whereas others can't bear it, so laser might be all right for other folks.

I got one on my leg from Veet a few years ago, and I won't risk using the stuff again because of it. I have moles down there too, so I won't wax either. These days I rob OH'S beard trimmer :p
