So PaddyPower already offering top 7 places but Boylesports usually go out to 8 closer to the event.

    My 2 picks so far:

    Dustin Johnson e/w @ 40-1 on Paddy (top 7)

    Ernie Els e/w @ 40-1 on Bet365 (top 6)

I'd say there's no way Boyles will go 8 at this stage.
They have been advertising 6 places since last week and it starts next week.
Coral, Hills, Sky Bet, 888/Bluesq & Ladbrokes all 5 places according to Oddschecker & Boyles 5 places as well according to them!
Ladbrokes are 6 places in Irish shops though.
PP are the only bookie with 7 places.
Check the prices of the player you are going to back first and then decide which is best!

I only remember one firm going 8 places once in my betting history (last 9/10 years) and while i'm pretty sure it was the Open, i'm also pretty sure it was PP with that offer. In any case, Boyles don't "usually go out to 8 places" for this event or any event. Unfortunely!

See the first post of this thread http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2056319866

I got 8 places last year. They might not have had 8 places open for a long period of time, but they were there.

Boylesports are paying on 6 places and giving cash back if any irish player wins it.

So many golfers so little money! I think Francesco Molinari is in great form and its a bout time he really challenged a major. Hes a very good putter so hoping he will do well @ 66/1!

Rafael Cabrera Bello @ 100/1 such a good little golfer and has won me quite alot of e/w money so would be rude not to give him a punt he has the game just needs to get the mentality!

Keegan Bradley @ 80/1 Ok his season hasnt been too good but the guy one a major on his first full season on the pga tour so he has the credentials that price is too good to pass on!

hmmmmmm might have to give luke donald a spin 16/1 is short but the guy is steady eddie and chances are these guys arnt gonna rip the course up for 4 days so he could be in with a shout!

I m bringing the topic up nice and early as im easily swayed and theres a round of golf for anyone who picks me a winner

Just goes to show how Francesco has improved. This time last year we'd probably be saying he's the worst putter on tour, especially from 4-6 feet.

Looking at a few different golfers trying to keep my 100% major run this year! Taking prices from PP.

Mickelson. Had a lot on him last year when he made a big run on the final day. He's 33/1 because he doesn't have a great record in the Open but i think it's a very good price and could see it drifting even further.

Schwartzel. Has a decent record at the Open over the last few years and I think 50/1 is a pretty good price here.

Fisher. Coming back to decent form recently. Think he has a shot here.

Daly. Playing well recently and of course no stranger to links courses. Worth a punt for the 150/1 price

Duval. 500/1. Not a really serious bet but he wasn't either a few years back when he nearly won the US Open at the same price. Won here before.

Will probably pick another one or two closer to the time.

Stricker - Steady player, great putter, due a major, played well in the John Deere this week - 66/1.

Singh - Coming off a win on links, streaky player who is on a streak - 150/1.

Potter - Would be a big surprise if he won it but stranger things have happened. Won the Greenbrier last week and played well this week so high on confidence - 400/1.

He's still outside the top 150 in putts per round, amazing really for a guy 2nd in the race to Dubai. He is second in greens in regulation though so 82nd in putting for GIR is probably a fairer reflection. Best iron player on tour imo.

Big Harry fan, but its crazy price for guy who has not won in 4 years.

Think he will do well though, but cant see him winning it.

Be only delighted if he proves me wrong.

    Best price is 20/1.

He is 21 on Betfair and Betdaq so as we speak its bookie who has him best price.

made a good start last week, led in Portrush after day 1, and opened with a 65 in Malaysia back in April.

TBH I did think I might see 25/1 somewhere and expected him to be trading bit higher on exchanges.

Might back him in place market.

Do many of you do first round leaders market in Golf?

    Care to share your thoughts?

Was thinking about maybe doing trail run to see if I could make a profit if I were to start betting on this.

so far im picking mickelson 33/1 playing in the scottish open was a good plan as i feel it will help him get used to weather conditions here

as for people on about Harrington's poor odds in the last 2 majors he finished 8th in the masters and 4th in the us open and seems to be placing in the top 10 in some of the tournaments

I'd never back an Irish player (team) with an Irish bookie as the prices will always be lower because of their liabilities.
Also applies for an English player (team) with an English bookie.
Doesn't happen all the time but more often then not.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,460 ✭✭✭✭The_Kew_Tour

Narrowed it down to 12 players and hoping to half that my the time I put few bets on.

But, there is 1 player who I have to back at triple figure odds and that is Fredrik Jacobson. His form coming into this is 15-8-16 and has had two top-20 finishes in the Open in past 3 years.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,632 ✭✭✭✭okidoki987

Stan James have gone 7 places but prices not as big as PP (1 or 2 pips behind for the 1st 4 in the betting).
Oddschecker have eventually changed the e/w terms for Boyles & Ladbrokes.
Coral only firm with 5 places now.
Some great value out there now as the firms all try to be best price.

    Top 20:
    Thongchai 5/1
    Milkha Singh 5/1

I'm confident atleast one of them will finish Top20- both like links

    Top European (Excluding GB&I)
    Bjorn @ 14/1

    Good luck lads:)

  • Site Banned Posts: 26,456 ✭✭✭✭Nuri Sahin

    Harrington @ 22/1 (B365) and Colsaerts @ 80/1 (Boyles)

I'll probably place my other two bets later on. Leaning towards Garcia as one of my two.

Do Bet 365 alter there odds at all in the days leading upto a Major, there is a difference in some sites prices even from yesterday but no change on Bet365. In fact looking on oddscecker just now Bet365 seem to be lagging quite considerably behind other sites prices.

Dave Tindall Preview on Betting Zone

Remember the last 2 Opens - read on....

Makes a very good case for the boy Fowler....!!!! :):):)

    RECOMMENDED BETS
    1.5pts e.w. Rickie Fowler at 40/1 (BetVictor, 1,2,3,4,5,6)
    1pt e.w. Ben Curtis at 100/1 (BetVictor, 1,2,3,4,5,6)
    1pt e.w. Jason Dufner at 50/1 (BetVictor, 1,2,3,4,5,6)
    1.5pts e.w. Justin Rose at 33/1 (BetVictor, 1,2,3,4,5,6)
    1pt e.w. Hunter Mahan at 50/1 (BetVictor, 1,2,3,4,5,6)

Although the miserable British summer has been a pain in the backside, at least it has given us a clearly defined strategy for picking the winner of The Open.

Long and thick rough has sprouted up everywhere on golf courses in the UK and, after watching practice rounds at Lytham and Open qualifying at St Annes Old Links, it's abundantly clear that to be holding approach shots on the greens and getting the ball to bite near flags, you need to be hitting from the fairway.

So my team for Lytham is made up of quality ball-strikers who have had their ball under control during this 2012 season.

It seemed an awful long way from his native California when Rickie Fowler turned up for the third round of the 2011 Open at Royal St George's wearing a large pair of mitts.

And yet, despite the cold, driving rain and fierce winds, young Rickie produced one of the best Open rounds in modern history - a two-under 68 that lifted him from tied 19th to tied third.

"It was awesome out there," said Fowler. "I love links golf. I love the variety and the options you get on the course. There's so many ways you can play one shot, and I feel like I can hit different shots and I like to hit different shots, and it's just the way I grew up learning how to play the game."

Although he slipped back to tied fifth on the final day, Fowler still made a huge impression and went into many pundits' notebooks as a man who could be a perennial challenger in Open Championships.

It came on the back of a tied 14th on debut at St Andrews in 2010 when he recovered splendidly from a potentially confidence-shattering 79 on day one. In fact, so well did Fowler play from Friday to Sunday that he shot lower than anyone in the field over the final 54 holes.

Having sandwiched a thrilling Ryder Cup debut in between those two events, Fowler has already tasted life in the fast lane and come through with flying colours.

What makes him such an enticing prospect this year is that he arrives at Lytham as a recent winner who is hitting the ball much, much straighter.

Fowler was starting to gain a reputation for spitting the bit in the final round but it all came together at Quail Hollow in May when a closing 69 put him into a play-off where he held his nerve to defeat Rory McIlroy and DA Points.

A week later, his confidence flowing, the 23-year-old finished runner-up in The Players Championship to make it a win and a second in two of the best fields outside of the majors.

He's jumped over 100 places - 157th to 51st - in the Driving Accuracy stats this year while his 10th place in Scrambling from under 30 yards is testament to his excellence around the greens.

Since the world rankings started in 1985, the three Lytham winners - Seve, Tom Lehman and David Duval - were all current, past or future world number ones.

Fowler has the potential to join that latter category so let's back him at 40/1.

OK I have narrowed it done to 6 players.

Tiger Woods @11 - Part of me is learning my lessons from the 2006 Open when he came in at massive 8/1 for some punters who clearly had faith that his game was not all gone through bad patch at the time. While his form has been up and down over past season, one thing seems to have me looking at him again and again and that is his form on his favorite courses. Tiger record in Open Championships is fantastic and while part of me thinks he may come up short, for the price alone there is huge potential to lay this off if he makes it to turn with great chance come Saturday.

Phil Mickelson @44 -think this could be huge price come Sunday- at same time he could miss cut. But at his price I think its massive. T2 last year and T16 last week proves he not just Parkland player and his Links form is coming around.

Rickie Fowler @42 - One concern I have from the start is that lot of people seem to be tipping this man and normally once that happens its curtains. He has stated in past that he loves Links Golf(which is big plus) and he has the kinda game that suits links players. His last 2 appearances have been Tied 14th and 5th so he has to be respected.

Dustin Johnson @60 - Another player who loves links Golf having finished Tied 2nd and 14th the previous 2 Open Championships. His record at Pebble Beach is also excellent and nearly made a playoff for the 2010 PGA Championship in Whistling Straits which is another Links type of course.

Fredrik Jacobson @120 - His current form is 15-8-16. He has finished in Top20 in past 2 Open Championships and has the short game to be in the business end come Sunday afternoon.

Brenden Grace @ 200 - A 3 time tour winner this season, what caught my eye is that 2 of those Victories came on Links type Golf Courses. His consistency is something which is a plus and has the short game to booth to post some low scores. One to keep eye on imo.

I'm simply amazed to see so many of you picking Rickie Fowler. I can't see him winning this tournament...ever.

And then, to compound my amazement...nobody is picking Rory MclIroy, at 25-1.

    25-1!!!!

That's simply a mad price. He's been a little off the boil recently but he's still been in pretty good form this year, better form than just about every player that has been mentioned on this thread. He's a great links player, won one of the practise rounds this week (has been playing the course a lot recently) and was probably about 7-1 to win this tournament a few weeks ago. I'm sorry to sound smug, or patronising...but 25-1 on Rory should be your bet, instead of fannying around with players like Branden Grace or Dustin Johnson.

Ok, I sound like an ass up there...but I don't think that's how I'll look come sunday afternoon.

Where are you getting 25's for McIlroy?

    PP have him at 20's.

    Have the follwing on:
    Poulter e/w (top 7) @ 35-1
Thongchai Jaidee e/w (top 7) @ 200-1. Really fancy Jaidee to put in a big week, he's been playing extremely well recently.

Still debating which three of the following to choose:
    Ben Curtis
    Rickie Fowler
    Westwood
    McIlroy
    Jacobson
    Harrington
Mickelson (think he had best last 54 holes of anyone in the field in Scotland last week)
