Surprised this hasn't been set up yet but how are folks' exams going?

Personally I have none, I'm an MA student so the lone exam is already well out of the way. It was good but difficult at times. Now the thesis to work around!

    Good luck all!

They're actually going better than expected surprisingly! :) 3 down, 4 to go - one Thursday, Friday and then Wednesday and Friday week. Left the study way too late though, and now I'm getting féck all sleep but it'll be worth it! :pac: I just keep telling myself "All June, All July, All August" :D

Four remaining, two down. I was actually happy with them so far, far happier than last year although I still got on rather well back then. :pac:

One exam down and four left to go! First one went awful. Back in August for that sadly :( I'm fairly confident about the rest though :D

Also, Reacher, stop rubbing it in our faces you've no exams :P

Pleased for you on both counts Palytoxin and Corkfeen.

You're doing history right Corkfeen? How're they going? Any tricksy questions?

That bad eh? Any of that compensation malark affect you? You could be lucky, unless of course you walked out after a few minutes!

Apologies! I just wanted to include my own story! If it's any consolation, UCC's History Dept. are fcuking hard markers so I've received ups and downs this year that you lot are going through now!

I'm doing Arts now so no pass by compensation :( Nah, it was SC1001. Hated the paper cos I hadnt studied for it :pac:

Oh yea, forgot you do History! Eeeeek! How's the thesis going?

That'll do it alright. I found the first year sociology exam the easiest part of the entire year in sociology. If you want any grinds over the summer let me know. I'm graduating this year with a major in sociology.

anyone know how to find out your courses policy on pass by compensation?
i tried google and the book of modules but couldn't seem to find it

It's quite good! Just over the half way mark. Still in its draft stage so my supervisor will be taking his red pen to its throat soon enough.

If I'd actually studied and went to class I'd have been grand like! But I didnt :pac: I'm hoping to keep it on next year if I can with Psych. Lesson learned though, you cannot wing Sociology :P How you finding it now actually?

Both were fine so and the hints pretty much came up. But I have the 3 hour Europe and the Wider World exam coming up on Monday. :D I really wish they wouldn't give us 3 hour exams. :pac: It's merely the fact that it's 3 hours long, not even a fear of failing or anything of the sort....

One down, six to go, another 5 within the next week. Two of them will be hellish, the other three are okay.

This one went better than I thought :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,116 ✭✭✭Salty

4 down, 4 more to go! They are going better than I expected, although I was kind of disappointed with English paper 1:( Paper 2 went swimmingly yesterday though! I had a back injury that prevented me from studying for 2 weeks so I'm kinda overloaded with work at the moment..it'll be over soon though! Roll on the 21st!

What's the deal with passing by compensation? Just curious, it won't apply to me as I'm confidant I'll do more than pass the exams!

Féck, it's well for some! :pac:
Physiology this morning, 6 essays to do 3. I narrowed down what I'd have study, still sure there would be at least 4 out of the 6 I could do, as anybody would. Go in, see the paper, not a single thing I studied came up! They picked backwards questions, copied some from last years paper, hadn't a clue what I was at! :( Still hopeful of a pass though! :pac:

I had a three hour one which was worth 100 per cent which was scary to say the least. No continuous assessment so it was imperative we did the work before hand. But indeed, 3 hour exams can be horrendous, but a small price to pay.

Also, I'm glad the hints came up. I remember getting no hints from one particular lecturer so I went by the previous exam papers. 3 years in a row the same question came up but for the fourth (and my exam) he changed it around. Agony. :pac:

I love it and am planning on doing my PhD in it come September, or preferably January. There is a steep learning curve, which I think is what puts most people off it in first year.

A word of advice about psychology: They are very tough markers. I'm minoring in it and i've never gotten a result, essay or exam, that i've been happy with from them. I regularly get 1.1s in sociology but in psychology i'm lucky to get mid 2.1.

Yea, a lot of people don't seem to like it or keep it on next year! I enjoy some parts of it, and some bits of it I aint too fond of. But it's a good subject and seems quite nice once you get the hang of it!

The psych dept seem to be a bit up their own arses tbh. My essays have all been marked pretty crazily. I knew the information, they could see I did, they just were not happy with format or my referencing or anything else.

AP1110 sat today! Didnt find it too bad :) Fingers crossed for a good pass anyway!

It went well. Had a smile on my face leaving anyway.

Worst exam ever today, probably cost me a 1H overall. Got to hate it when a lecturer tells you what to study and then gives an exam with none of that on it

2 to go, Anatomy tomorrow, just an mcq so should be grand, and Pharmaceutics friday, and that's it! :D

:( Does anyone know if you don't do, or fail continuous assessments, can you make up the marks any other way? Most of the marks for my course are based on continuous assessments and seeing as I was missing from college for a few months I have no idea how to make up the marks. HELP

You can make up the marks in August, don't worry. Usually you'll have to do the continuous assessment again (the questions may be different) but sometimes the department just substitutes an exam for it instead. The best thing to do is ring your department and find out off them. If you were missing for a genuine reason i.e. illness, financial issues, difficult home situation then you may, if you can provide evidence, be entitled to resubmit the missed work without being capped. Best of luck!

Handed in my last ever assignment on Monday - happy days!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 720 ✭✭✭calnand

Been done since Monday afternoon, but went in today and bumped unto my year coordinated and she wanted to arrange a meeting with me to discuss my portfolio(doing architecure btw) she didn't seem happy. It's just another thing I could do without, missed two weeks over an operation but wasn't fully right when I went back got two weeks extension to finish work and projects.
But that ate into my study time and I had a 3000 word essay to do as well.

Anyone know if there is some special circumstances thing I can apply for, in case it doesn't go well in Monday? I was really looking forward to a nice summer, im off ti Chicago on the 28th so I really don't want to have to cone back early.

    Thanks in advance

When did you start it? And when is it due? Do you not have all summer to do it? My thesis is due the 31st August but I haven't had the initial meeting with my supervisor yet, still doing continuous assessment. So jealous! Well done

Started meetings and research in the first semester and dove properly into more research after January. Started typing when I was finished 'regular' college in April/May. It's due sometime in September/early October although I'm not certain there. I do indeed have all Summer to do it but why leave it lie around? I've nothing else to do and tipping away reduces the workload. Plus, I like doing the work. And lastly, early drafts of it will mean I can perfect it as much as possible. Mine's 20,000 words.

What's your field? That's a bit surprising that you haven't had a meeting yet but that's just me!

Oh wow, so in your course ye just dived straight into the thesis? Is it worth 100 percent of your final grade so?

I'm doing my Master's in English Literature. Coursework involved four essays to do during the year, each essay being between 5000 and 7000 words. Two were due in January and my final two are due in a week. Hence why I haven't started on my thesis at all yet. I've been frying my brain ever since lectures ended trying to get these essays done. By the time August rolls around I'll have written approximately 45,000 words. :( Thesis is 20,000 too.

What field are you in? You're dead right getting stuck in this early, your thesis'll be near perfection by September.

One more exam left to go, forever. Have to wait until next Friday, but that's it then. That exam will be grand, but I can really see next week dragging.

Today's exam was a bit demoralising, should have been able to do better, but definetly passed.
